August 28, 200124 yr I've just noticed 6 instances in the last 2 days -- I click on a field to add more data and text is missing. i.e., I entered this sentence last week: "this person seems to have a twin named Frances who lives in Italy" Now when I click on the field, it says: "this person seems to have a tw" What's happening to my info!? Thanks. Jane
August 28, 200124 yr Its unlikely that this could happen on its own. Does a script or calc reference this field? We need more info
August 28, 200124 yr Author There are no scripts or calcs in this field -- it's a simple text field. I haven't learned HOW to script yet! I've been working with this database for about 3 years now and this is the first time something like this has happened. Also, I have had no computer crash, or other problems with my machine that may have caused such a thing.
August 29, 200124 yr Time to back-up the databases, then do some preventative maintenence. First check you are using the latest patch level of FMP and your operating system. Run a disk checking utility on your hard disk. (You might even consider defragmenting it while you're at it.) Second, in FMP use Save a Copy As... command to save *compressed* copies of the files, then rename and use these copies as the working files. If the problems persists use the recover command on the databases.
August 30, 200124 yr Author Thanks for the assistance, Vaughan. I've done all the steps you suggested and went back and looked things over as closely as I could with 4500 records. It seems to be running into problems on fields over 250 text characters/spaces. I've counted 43 instances of this truncating. So.... is there a field size limit I don't know about? It certainly lets me type in as much as I want. Thanks. Jane
September 2, 200124 yr JUST A THOUGHT When changing a Text field to a Number field the Number field only retains the first 255 characters. Maybe worth checking! Especially is your not the only user and the database isn't locked down [ September 01, 2001: Message edited by: Stuart T ]
September 5, 200124 yr Author I'm the only one who uses this program, database, and computer, so no one else has made changes. The field is and always was a text field -- I checked just to be sure it hadn't "changed itself".....at this point I won't even rule that out. I've copied, compressed, repaired, backed up, etc. and will just hope this weird problem doesn't pop up again! Thanks. Jane
September 9, 200124 yr Just a thought here! Are you running this on a Windows system? If yes, I’ve seen a problem like this before, but the problem was occurring all over, not just in FM. A long way round, but try reinstalling Windows. Also to check, especially on a Windows system: How big is the FM DB How much room do you have on the drive where this file is How much room do you have on your C: drive for: a. The virtual memory b. The FM temp files Have you been getting any other Win related error messages recently? Do you have virus protection? Rigsby
