I have tried the "setting sliding options" from the help file in FileMaker, and even though I have followed the instructions carefully and tried it several times, it does not seen to want to work. Any ideas?

If you are expecting to see the results in Browse Mode, you won't. Sliding of OBJECTS not windows only occurs in Preview Mode or when layouts are printed.

Thank you, BD. When I went to Preview mode, I saw no change. That's why I say I followed directions carefully, but it still didn't work. Do you have to set this up on a new FileMaker db before populating it? I am trying to make this change on an already existing document - there is nothing in the directions about that. Could this be it? It only works when you are starting completely from scratch, or on a new record with no data in it? What do you mean "the sliding of objects, not windows?" Does it not work on data fields? I mean, what's the point, if that's so.

Chances are that there is some small or invisible object on your layout that is not set to slide/shrink and it is interfering with the others. Try doing a Select All in layout mode and see if some mysterious selection knobs appear. Don't forget to scroll way over to the right of the layout to see if there are things over there.

Direct answers to specific questions.

"Do you have to set this up on a new FileMaker db before populating it?"

no

"I am trying to make this change on an already existing document - there is nothing in the directions about that. Could this be it?"

no

"It only works when you are starting completely from scratch, or on a new record with no data in it?"

no

I believe the objects referred to in this instance are fields. Fields exist within the FMPro db file window.
