Newbies TMac003 Posted April 4, 2002 Newbies Posted April 4, 2002 I am new to this forum and apologize if there is an easy way to look at archives, but I have a machine that is having problems with Helvetica. When I open Filemaker on it, the files that use Helvetica come up with the text in the fields garbled. It is only happening on this machine and I have replaced the System font several times, (which helps temporarily) but it keeps coming back. Anyone else had this problem? Thanks,
Vaughan Posted April 4, 2002 Posted April 4, 2002 It sounds like the computer is not well. A couple of things need doing: back up the sick computer check the disk for errors reinstall the operating system install all OS patches and fixes reinstall FileMaker Pro install all FMP patches and fixes Ideally I'd back up the machine, reformat the hard disk and reinstall everything; it's a lot of work but it fixes it good and proper.
kenneth2k1 Posted May 6, 2002 Posted May 6, 2002 Just as a side note, I would suggest only using Times or Arial for fonts. These are the most common fonts across platforms and individual computers. One day you may want to put your solution on another computer and the text may not be recognized again. Ken
goostree Posted May 7, 2002 Posted May 7, 2002 I had a similar problem with my db. The cause of the problem was that I had built the database on a Mac using a font that was not available on Windows, so my Windows machines would sometimes come up with gibberish in fields instead of text. I don't know if you are working in a cross-platform environment, but if you are, you might want to check it out. If you think this is the problem, change the font on all your fields and layouts to Arial or Times. These are available on both Windows and Mac and should cause no problems in a cross-platform environment.
