FMS on OSX and a Windows Domain Server

Featured Replies

Hello Forum!

simple question.

Can my client run an Mac OS X Filemaker Server that stands in a Windows Network and authenticates Users against a Group on a Windows Domain Server (Active Directory)?

The Group contains the users we want to give access to the Filemaker solution to.

I do that already for several clients but they all have Windows FMS Servers where thats of course no problem.

Can a Mac FMS Server also authenticate against a Windows Domain, even though a Mac isnt "in a windows domain" as such so to speak?

Or do I have to tell the client to get a Windows FMS Server if he wants to do that.

Thanks

Spongebob

I think you will need to bind the OS X FM Server to the Active Directory Domain first, as there's no way of setting the specific authentication server within FMS - so it must be an OS level consideration.

The FM Clients are (in effect) authenticated through FMS, which is now looking at the AD server for credentials checks.

The OS X machine needs Active Directory binding through "Directory Utility"

Great and this actualy works? Anyone doing this? Experiences?

Thank you

Dunno, as I said "I think" and haven't actually tested. Maybe you can complete this story?

yes it can be done, but it comes with a couple of caveats:

- Single-Sign-On is not possible. That only works on an all-Windows deployment

- OSX has a very spotty track record when it comes to be being bound to an AD. A lot of the OSX updates have broken this functionality
