Real beginner - need help with portals please

I'm really new to filemaker and still getting to grips with how it all works.  I have been following the Filemaker Pro13 Userguide as well as online tutorials, and am stuck with portals. I appear to have followed all the steps correctly but although my portal fields appear in the edit layout mode, when I close edit layout, no data appears in the portal.  I have checked my relationships which all seem to be in order.  Can anyone help to point me  in the right direction please?

Make sure your relationships in the graph and the related fields in the tables are set up properly. If they are then look at your data to see if their are in fact records to show in the portal.

Maybe post the file so we can look and make specific suggestion?

Also, make certain the fields are completely contained b the portal. One pixel outside the portal and the data won't appear.
