Welcome to our community, full of great ideas on developing your FileMaker solutions effectively,
for peer-to-peer support of the FileMaker Platform and related products and services.
Author’s note: Inevitable comparisons will be drawn between the new While function and the venerable CustomList custom function, which I wrote about at length several years ago. Preliminary testing indicates that CustomList is faster under certain circumstances and While is faster under others. In my opinion, both of them belong in your developer tool kit. […]

Security is always a big topic when it involves data, or people, or possessions. Recently, over on the FileMaker Community, there was a very beneficial discussion regarding security. Unfortunately, that discussion was the victim of a necessary action...and was deleted. It was deleted, because the discussion was tied to a video that, as was det
Hacking Your Own FileMaker Platform Solutions
Should FileMaker Platform developers mount hacking attacks on their own solutions? At first glance, this may seem an odd question. But I believe that the answer is “Yes, we should.”
Consider this. As developers we see our solutions from a totally different perspective than Threat Agents see them. Without practicing our own hacking skills, we can become blind to the vulnerabilities a Threat Agent can exploit to compromise the Confidentiality

There are a few things to know about installing / upgrading FileMaker Pro / Go.
General
FileMaker Pro and Claris Pro have version numbers such as XX.y.z, where XX is the major version, y the minor version, and z a build version.
Minor upgrades (within a major version) are always available. All users with a 19.1.x version are entitled to 19.6.3 for instance.
Minor upgrades can be made from within the app. (From the Help menu : Check for updates)
Major upgrades such as version 19 to 20 requi
April 25. 2023 – Claris just announced the immediate availability of FileMaker 2023, the new version of the FileMaker Platform
All components of the platform, FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Go and FileMaker Server are concerned, as well as Claris Connect.
A detailed review of new features by Fabrice Nordmann can be found on 1-more-thing’s web site, so we, as a FileMaker hosting service, will focus on the server side.
There are a few scenarios where you may need to change the filenames for your FileMaker custom apps. For example, you might be hosting your development copy and production copy on the same server. Since FileMaker Server does not allow you to host two files with the same name you have no choice but to name them differently, eg,“My_CRM” and “My_CRM_Dev”. Or perhaps you’re maintaining one master codebase on the development server and pushing that codebase to one or more […]

The first EngageU FileMaker Conference took place in 2002 in Malmö, Sweden, organized by SquareMoon and ClickWorks. fmcloud.fm was of course sponsor of the event, which happened to be the first major event since Covid that Claris staff, including Brad Freitag, CEO, attended.
Fabrice Nordmann and Romain Dunand (1-more-thing/fmcloud.fm) presented a session about the various ways of hosting FileMaker/Claris files.
What are the pros and cons of a local server, a dedicated host (physical), a Virtua
Hello! We’re excited to share that Databuzz is doing some very cool things with Otto, as they’ve recently discussed on their blog. Databuzz is an FileMaker integration expert and awesome Claris Partner based in Sydney, Australia. They announced support for using Otto Webhooks as an alternative to the PHP files that they supply, beginning with their fmESignature Link product (DocuSign Edition). “Otto’s built in support for webhooks means you can use Otto to act as the receiver of the incoming […]
With many native features in Claris/FileMaker, you may end up hitting what you "think" is a brick wall. In this case, I'm referring to the ability of sorting portals. You've only got one checkbox per portal with the options for specifying a selection of fields to sort by. True, you can choose a number of fields to sort by, but, you can't change their order dynamically or allow a user to make any changes to which fields are used.
That is, of course, unless you combine a variety of native feature

For years and years, FileMaker Server has been available for macOS and Windows operating systems. In 2020, FileMaker Server was released, introducing a Linux version.
The new Claris platform’s server, Claris Server, is even Linux only and will remain so.
Clearly, the intention at Claris is to support only the Linux version in the future, which makes perfect sense in terms of development cost and flexibility to implement new features and optimizations. Nick Lightbody published this performance
Introduction This is a quick follow up to an issue I mentioned last month where FileMaker’s JSON functions can transform a number into scientific notation when you might prefer to have that number displayed as standard notation. Demo file: json-force-standard-notation.zip Note: demo file uses JSONGetElementType so requires FM 19.5 or later. The overall workings of… Continue reading JSON – Force Standard NotationView the full article
While you won't have access to as many visual effects as if you had created a native iOS application, there are still some things you can do and take advantage of with native transitions within FileMaker Go. One of my own recent experiences led to making a dedicated script which enhances the visual appeal of performing a find within a single layout.
In order to gain the advantage of FileMaker Go's native layout transitions, you can use a dedicated layout and script to accomplish some really nic
Hi there.
In this article we're talking about record duplication - specifically multiple records including both parent and related child records. We discuss various different approaches and spell out the pros and cons of each. We hope this article proves educational and gives you some ideas around ways to duplicate data.
As always we have built a thorough example file to inform and showcase the different approaches.

Your business has grown and evolved over the years, and your Claris FileMaker database has been keeping pace with you the entire time. Unlike other applications, this solution you built does everything you need, it fits your business rules, rather than forcing you to adapt your workflows to an off-the-shelf application.
You built it yourself way back when by grabbing a QuickStart guide, locked yourself in your office, started by hammering out a few tables, a few layouts, and a couple of scri
Sometimes, it's the little things you learn that make working with Claris/FileMaker so enjoyable. Things like making a Button Bar balanced when hiding segments and not having to use any scripts or extra code (unless desired) to do it.
This video presents a great little technique of how you can use a Hide calculation on your button bar segments yet still maintain the same relative button size. With this little bit of know-how, you can easily stack various button bars and provide all kinds of pro
I love my smart home. I also feel really fortunate to have it, especially given how my wife and I are complete opposites when it comes to technology. She admires the simple practicality of pen and paper, while the computer nerd in me always tries to squeeze out any efficiency in my everyday process (which is lived mostly on a computer screen). It started with a light switch When we moved into our new house last summer, I was able […]
