Hi, I

I am an eye doctor. We use digital images of patient's retinas in their charts. We simply insert the photos into a container field. Then I can print the chart and I can 1)be reminded that I have a photo and 2)have the photo on paper. I would really like to be able to click on the photo and have it go to full screen size so I can see more details and show abnormalities to patients. Can anyone help?

I have an invoice setup that I want to total up the item amounts. I have a checkbox for the line items for if they are taxable or not. I want to total them up seperately. I think I can do this by setting a global value for either of the taxable options (either taxed or not) and setup a second relationship between the tables using both these fields (the unique id and the taxable fields). I was just curious if any one knows of a better way so that I don't need the global fields. Thanks

Hello, My DB is a plant database... I insert a Image at each records to represent the plant... Every other session needs to get a particular set of questionnaires filled out. The other half of the sessions need to get a different set filled out. Right now, what I'm doing is listing all the questionnaires for each session (basic, "yes no" radio button set). I'd prefer that in the portal row listing each session, the appropriate questionnaires be listed rather than all of them. I have a database with a field called "presenting problem" and a drop down list of 18 possible choices (depression, anxiety, ocd,...). I wanr to report the number of files with each choice in it. Forinstance, of 236 total records, 8 have depression, six have anxiety... Then I want to have a field that tells what percent of the total this represents. Can anyone help? Thanks.

As usual I have a problem. I want to add PDF files to a container field in a sales database. I then want to 'double click' on the file icon (in the container field) and have Acrobat open up automatically and display the PDF. If I insert the file into the container as a 'file reference' there is no problem. BUT... (there's always a but) this is not what I want because I cannot guarantee that I can maintain the integrity of a completely separate file structure holding all the PDFs (there may be thousands) over the years that this database is hopefully used. I would like to have a database with three fields: Item Unit Cost Total Cost of All Unique Items (by category) The ITEM field is populated from a value list which gets its values from the Item Field. (If we purchase an item that has never been purchased before, we add the new Item to the value list If we purchase an item that is already in the database we just select it from the valuelist.) For whatever reason i need to make a calculation field show the first related record, another show the second, another the third upto about 10. I also cannot use a portal simply because the records i wish to show are from various different relationships. I can make it show the first related record easily enough. I just hope that there is a way of doing this.

I need: checkbox1-x and checkbox2-x to be deselected if ProductIDx is empty. Checkbox1-x to be selected if ProductIDx is not empty; and Checkbox1-x deselected when Checkbox2-x is selected and ProductID is not empty. Help! I'm stuck on something. I have a database for interviewers to log the status of on surveys they are conducting. Each interviewer has an ID number and a password. When I go into define password and click "Limited" for browse records, the calculation box opens. What is it wanting? I want each interviewer to see only the interviews assigned to them, not any assigned to other interviewers. What calculation does it want from me? Thanks.

I need a serial key which only increments based on the uniqueness of another field. Allow me to explain. When the record is created the date is entered into the date field. If this is the first record to be entered with this date, the serial key should be 1, the second 2 and so on. As soon as a new date is entered the serial key should revert to 1. An added complication is that the records are not necessarily entered in order of date. any clever ideas?

I'm putting a webserver together of video clips (4Tb worth). To help the user navigate through them a bit easier I want to use FM as the web front end, but I've come up against a problem. I don't want to embed the QT files else the database will be immense and probably really slow, so I've been inserting them as references. Everything is works OK, but the links don't show up on the browser. I know this is sounding like it's in the wrong forum topic, but the correct one doesn't seem to attract much traffic, so I'm having to try other solutions myself. I have a field called "ModDate" that is a "Date" field and is checked as modification date. Problem is that it updates all the records every day. I cannot find anything that is causing this. Is there a better way to update date when a record is changed? Is this a FM7 problem? TIA Ivan

I'm endeavouring to build a sales database where we use containers to store scanned PDF's of client contracts. We are trying to apply the seperation model concept in our database with the records and calculations in different files from the layouts (primarily for security and ease of development for multiple FMP7 developers in the office). All has been fine so far until we tried linking container fields from seprate files on to the layout in questions. The container name on the table is "greyed out" and will not work. All other fields, value lists and calculations work just fine. Do containers not work accross multiple files ? Do they need to be embed…

I need information about the behavior of global fields and their scope. 1) If more than one window is open on a particular machine, and a script running in one window changes and commits global fields, are those changes reflected in the other windows? What if the script neglects to commit? In other words, is it possible--even momentarily--for global fields to have more than one value? Assume that the tables underlying the layouts are part of the same relationship graph. 2) What is the behavior in the same circumstances above, but over a network with different network clients using globals? Hello, What is the best way to have access to several pictures per record. Most of my records have one photo, but some may have up to 15 or more. I currently just use one photo container per record. I have about 650 images in my db. The first 648 images worked fine. However, now when I insert an image into my container field, the image appears very small in the container rather than filling it like the first 648 times. I created a new db as a test and had no problem inserting and displaying the same image. PDF file is attached for reference. Any idea how to fix this? Hello all. My question is if there is a way to change the font size of a field specific to individual records. In other words, Lets say i have field: Company Name. the company name will be printed out in lets say a form. However, company 1 wants the font size to be 14 point, company 2 12 point, and company 3 8 point. Is there a way around this without having to use multiple fields??? TIA. -John

I'm looking for a way to format text when moving to the next field. I've looked at Typeahead and Clairvoyant. But these appear to apply when lists are needed. I'm looking for something that will add additional text to the entered data. I have emails that all have the same server information. I would like to just type the user name and have FM add the "@yaddayadda.com". I cannot set the field to have a default "@yaddayadda.com" because the db is used for an online directory that displays email. Email information will appear online when there is data in the field. I am having trouble formatting a phone number field to display the phone number as (000)000-0000, I would also like an error message to display if an incorrect number of digits are entered. Wasn't sure to do it as calculation or number field, etc cannot find options nor sure of the code to format it this way. Hi, suppose I have a field, which I want to validate using a calculation and my user enters for a date 10/42/04 How do I know that is ont a good date ? I'd like to find this out so that i can then use my calculation to display a message. I thought Isvalid might work, does it? I didn't see any mention of it saying it worked for dates. I have tried with both types and am unable to get the results I really want. I have a table that has a quantity field. I want to display a total of the field. I have tried both using a summary field and also creating a self relationship to the table and Sum( relatedField ) but both seem to not update until I click on the field. I'm perplexed! This seems like it should be so simple. I have a calculation field, (Current Week) that is nothing more than the "WeekOfYearFiscal" function. And yet, the only return I get is a "?". Each week is a record so I expect to get a return of 1 thru 53 for each week of the year as I go along. Monday being the start of the week. The calculation is as follows: Current Week = WeekOfYearFiscal(7/1/2004,2) Why can't I get a darn number returned in the field? What am I not getting about this? Thanks in advance for the help. How can I define a field to show all value list items?

I've built a bug tracking system using FM7. It runs on Windows XP and uses a server to host one copy of FM7 to host 3 programmers, a tester (me) and one other user. This morning one of the programmers asked me to add an attachment field so that he can drop Word .doc files containing images (screen shots) and text into the database. That part is working fine except the time to insert the images is too long. What I want to do is allow the user to double click on the object (or press a button) and have the object open in the appropriate application. Can anyone point me towards an example of how this can be done?

I'm building a time clock. I have four fields: START --- STOP --- ELAPSED TIME --- TOTAL TIME START & STOP are scripted buttons which insert the current time into the fields. ELAPSED TIME is the calculation STOP-START TOTAL TIME is a summary field that sums ELAPSED TIME in all records. Everything does what it is supposed to do as long as START & STOP have both been activated. If only START is activated, the resultant ELAPSED TIME shows up as a negative value and skews the TOTAL TIME. Most of the maintenance will be done at a central office; however, I'm trying to write a script so that individual teachers can log in & access only their record so they can update address changes, etc. Since we already have their SSN's on file, I'm trying to let them use the last 4 digits as a login, using the Right function script step. Enclosed is a file which I made because I have to batch eight hours of video footage. I am making a small program to generate a batch list I import into Final Cut Pro for easier batch capture. So far I'm finished except that the final text export file I'm going to use, I have to edit two places. As you see in the enclosed text files, Batchlist1.txt misses the heading which the edited batchlist2.txt has, which are Media Start and Media End. I have a database that lists airline routings for query by an internet booking engine. These take the form of various tokens of info listed in a string. I have created a database with tables for calculating each part of the routing string. Because a single routing can hold up to 40 possible segments and it takes approx 30 including calculated fields fields to hold the data for each segment the solution I used was to list segments in one table grouped by ID (thus giving me a table of 30 fields instead of 1200). I am playing with the Document Tracker sample database from FM7. Each record has a container field with a link to a document. If I decide I no longer require a document I would like to be able to delete the target document from my hard disk as well as deleting the record from the Filemaker database. Is it possible to do this using a script? I can produce the Windows filename (including path) as a field fairly easily and I have tried using the DOS command Del in various ways with no success.

Hi What I want to do: Database for keeping track of electricity use. So take start reading take end reading en use the outcome of end reading - start reading. The following day I create a new record and the start reading is the end reading from the previous day. But I do not seem to get it working! Hi 3 tables: Customer Purchases Inventory In the purchase table, there are multiple purchases per customer (by customer ID) I want to create a summary in which i would be able to see the total purcahses of each customer, but when i create the layout in the customer table , the body will only display the the last purchase the customer has made i have made a portal, which seems to work but i prefer it to be just the body istead, as i cant do calculations in the portal and do not like how the portal will always be 1 size and will not scale accordingly to rhe number of records somethign liek this: any help guys? SCENARIO: a calculation field with 20 repeats, all repetitions showing horizontally in a portal row, and the field designated as a button. QUESTION: is it possible to click on a specific repetition of the field and have the repetitiion # identified and passed on? (i.e. click on rep #5 of 20 and pass the rep# to a specific field for use in other calculations.) Because the field is designated as a button, it cannot be entered - hence the 'Get ( ActiveRepetitionNumber )' function cannot be used. Anyone have any ideas, or is this impossible?

The solution I'm currently developing requires that I set up some calculated true/false relationships. An example is the coupon tracking. The user creates a coupon, enters a dollar value, an expiration date, and links select company clients to the coupon record via a join table. In the join table there is a calculated field that returns either a 1 or 0 based upon today's date and the expiration date. When the user creates an invoice record, he/she is given a list of valid coupons for the client on the invoice. The user may then choose to apply a coupon to the invoice record. Pretty basic stuff. I have a situation where I'd like to use a calculated global field. Although FileMaker will let me define the field, the calculation doesn't work. Ok.....the answer is too simple?...right?...I certainly hope so.....I have 500 records....I initially search for all with a first name of "David"....it gives me 25 records.....how on Heavens earth do I get this number to show up (in its own field) on my layout?....Or any other "find records" search that I do?....I gotta be overlooking the obvious...right? The "Get" function shows me only total records in database....I just need the number of records in the newly found set. Any help is greatly appreciated.

ok, in the database I inherited there is a field that should be a date field, but was created as a text field. We wanted to change it to only allow dates so I changed it to a date field. Now here is the problem, any record that had that field as only a 2 digit year for the years 2000 - 2004, is now reading and 1900 - 1904. Is there anyway to create and run a script to change this? At Devcon, they showed us a way to reformat the data itself in a field to a different format, not just the display. I can't remember how to do that! I have a number field that has values such as "142" "42.2" "42.25" I want the data to be "142.00", "42.20" and "42.25" (always two decimal places). I'm running into the problem because I need to "set field" the value from that field into a global field that contains other data. I've tried to round, setprecision, and truncate. I even tried checking for the position of the decimal point and adding ".00" for ones without a decimal and "00" for the rest, intending to round or truncate to get back to the two demila …

I would like to permit the data entry of text , such as entering a telephone number, to not worry about the formatting but be formatted upon tabbing out of the field. For example, enter a phone number as 6107679560, and have the field format upon tabbing out of the field to (610) 767-9560. Over the years I have used other databases to do this with placeholders, but cannot find a way to do it in Filemaker 7. Any advice?

I have two fields with drop down lists. The lists come from a related database. Field 1 = Card Name Field 2 = Card Number. In the related database there are two colums, Colum A Card Name has a corresponding Colum B with Card Number. What i want is on the record entry database, when user chooses Card Name from the drop downlist, for corresponding Card Number to be auto entered from Colum B in the related Database. Greetings all - I want to pull the user name from an email which will be used for login and web account information. EX: Entering "[email protected]" into the "emailAddress" field would also populate the "login" field with "someguy" and "web" field with "http://student.school.edu/someguy". Using the left function does not work because the user name can be 1 to 8 characters long, and the right function only grabs the count from the right. Any ideas or suggestiongs? I have a series of ten text fields which each contain the same types of data (names of fruit fly genes). There are ~200 records in the file, all having gene names in this ten text fields. What i need to do is add a calculation field (one for each text field.. eg. ten calc fields??) which takes the gene name in each of these ten text fields and searches for how many times the same gene appears in all ten fields and IN ALL ~200 RECORDS. Here I am in Define Fields again. I have buttons which figure discounts and apply by script to UnitPrice (number). Script is: Set Field [ Round(UnitPrice * (1.0 - Get(ScriptParameter)); 2) ] Buttons are percents and script parameters are: .05, .10, .15 on up to .50 I have a global field called DISC and want it to display as: 5%, 10% etc. Right now, it displays 05%, 1% (instead of 10) ... yuk. I have a field that calculates the age on an invoice with the following calculation; Ceiling((GetCurrentTimeStamp) - TimeStamp(Date_Sent; Time(0;1;0)))/86400) Date_Sent is of type 'Date'. The formula works, but doesn't update from day to day. The only way I can get it to update, is to edit the calculation and change it back again, then it updates. Hi, I'm quite new to FM but worked my way through the basics I think. My problem is the following: I would like to insert a list of filenames of images (e.g. world.jpg) which, when clicked, open in the appropriate application (e.g. Photoshop). Actually it should look like the list-view in the explorer and behave the same. I used a container field and inserted a file as symbol. But this way I always have the symbol (surprise, surprise) in the form, which would make a longer list of files pretty big. Can anyone help me with this?? Thanks!

I am brand new to FMP so please bear with me and my question(s). I have a database with cartoons. I have only one container field presently. When I Insert>Picture... it doesn't seem to matter whether I do it with the "Store only a reference to a file" box checked or not....since, when I click on the picture, in either/both cases I can Edit>Export field contents.... In both cases the file is exported, even though in one case it's just supposed to be the reference. What am I missing here? I am trying to avoid using too much disc space by only having one container field that has both the file and picture, so I can trash the original file/folder. Thanks for the help.

I am using a Calc. Field that has 4 x Check Boxes. I can get it to work if 1 x selection is made, but i want to be able to select a combination of 2 Check Boxes. How do i do this? Am using :- CASE(fielda="a",fieldz, fielda="b",fieldy, fielda="c",fieldx) I tried this:= CASE(fielda="a" and "b",fieldzz) and CASE(fielda="a and b",fieldzz) but they did not work. I have a database with the pictures and info of all paintings that we sell. Each record has it's own picture. I was wondering what would it be better , to import the picture ou just the reference. My database may have more than 2,000 records, and growing, so if I import each picture I think it would be too big. I don't know what is better. Anyone?

I am creating a database for school use - I am a teacher. In the database, I have created a number of help screens, each containing a text field. I can type text in these fields - but when I exit from FM7 and re-open the database the text seemingly has disappeared. However, when I go into Preview mode, the image shows the "disappeared" text! Why is the text in my text fields disappearing when I am in Browse mode? I have checked all possibilites (eg white coloured text), but no luck! Any help appreciated! Frank Bugeja

I have wholesale number. I need a calculation number: Wholesale number plus 67% of it ... and then if the cents is < 50, round it down to the next 99 cents. And if 50 or above, round up to the next 99 cents so that: Wholesale = 6.29 becomes 10.99 Wholesale = 7.19 becomes 11.99 Wholesale = 4.69 becomes 7.99 These are examples I took from previous orders. I can get this part: Round(Wholesale + (Wholesale * .67); 2) I can't make it round up or down right to the 99 cents. I tried using IF but it kept weirding on me and the number of cents to adjust kept changing. Ideas please?

Please help, I am trying to make a calculation that just returns the name of the current field selected and it is not working. I made a calculation field that has this in it, Get(ActiveFieldName). When I have field selected nothing shows in my calculation field though. does anyone know what is going on? I am exporting a container field that contains .pct file. The database contains approximately 1500 records and I want to automate an export of all the .pct files. So it is great now that we have this feature in 7 to export the contents of a container field. but does any body have a suggestion on how to automate this so that it names the file with, say the contents of a text field in the same record for instance?

I created a report with a subsummary. I display the average of student's attendance for all the courses token. And I want to change the color of the background each time the result is less than 85%. It's a flag that said the student has been absent so often. I had many answers, but no one take into concideration thae fact that the attendanceavrage is not a field but rather a subsummary generated while creating the report.

I have a container field that holds PDF files of cabinet drawings. To conserve space, these are stored as only a reference to the file. To open the file the user has to double click onto the PDF icon in the container field. Is there a way to open the PDF file via a scripted button or a calculation rather than clicking onto the file? Ok, the records in my database have a zip code field, and I wanted a field that would tell me how many records in the database have that same zip code. So i set up a self relationship, based on the zip code, and used this calculation: Count( zip code count::constant ) constant being a field that is always equal to "1". now my question is this; how can I make it so that it calculates only using the current found set?

Well, I thought I understood these text things but this one isn't working. I need to grap part of a UPC code. I want people to enter part of it and a single portal row to appear showing the appropriate product. UPC codes look like this: 7 49623 00157 7 I want people to type '157' which is unique to a product in that exact position (into global text) and that relate to the above calc. How can I say MiddleWords(UPC; 3; 1 (but only the right 3 characters of that 'number of words 1')?? I tried many things to get it and can't. I tried from the left and the right and the middle.

I'm a newbie, sorry if the answer to this question is too obvious, but I can't figure out how to do it on my own. After filling in information in the last field on a record, I would like to move to the first field of the next record upon hitting enter from the last field. Hey, I have two fields, one that you enter a dollar amount, and one that categorizes it. I want to make it so if you choose "zero" or whatever from the drop down list of categoriies, then it automatically places the amount "$0.00" in the dollar amount field (and locks you out).... and if you choose something else you can place a new dollar amount... how do I do this? I have a client who has created a db for odd travel sites. Each record contains four container fields with inserted images. The data will be exported to XML to be read by the Flash app on the local public tv website. I have read that i can create a calc field that will parse the container data so that the relative path and file name will be exported for each record. The scenarios that i have read about don't address my problem specifically so any guidance would be extremely helpful. this is a pro bono thing or I'd just hire someone. 1600 image names would have to be manually entered otherwise!!

I've been searching and can't find help. Ive learnt alot about title case etc but I'm in a quandry... I have text field which is a mix of old program and new. Old program was all caps and new is right - entered as title case. i hate all caps. I should have fixed it before importing but I did not and now its too late. When I insert a file or a picture into a container field I am given the option to store it as just a reference to the file or picture. This option does not appear to be available when inserting a quicktime. If this is true, the insertion of quicktime movies will make for some real big files real quick. Hi - I am a doctor trying to create a DB for skin cancer patients. We decide patients' follow up based firstly upon the thickness of the tumour. I have created a calculation field for follow up (calculated follow up), which does this based upon a free text entry for tumour thickness. BUT sometimes we need to override this schedule depending on other variables. I want to be able to choose from a predefined value list (follow up override) to override the value created by the calculation field (calculated follow up). How do i create a field that returns the same numeric value for all records? In my application, our billable labor rate is used in various calculations and or fields. When our rate goes up I have to track down everyplace it is used and increase the value. Can't I just create a field for the labor rate and increase the value there instead. I tried using Auto Enter and placing the rate in the Data field but this didn't work. There must be a simple way to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When I apply security to my database limiting a privilege set from total access but allowing it modify access to all fields and all records but view only all layouts, the permissions work correctly on all fields except container fields. They do not allow access even though it is clearly allowed in the permissions. I am looking to paste *.pdf files in the fields for record storage. But I don't want users to have access to change layouts.

Ok, I've got a staff database with many classifications for position, and I want a tally for how many of each position have been hired. So I defined a Global variable for each possibility wrote a script to count each and store it in the respective globals... the script does a search, moves to the last record, then sets the value of the global to the current record count, which gives me a number I can then display on the layout. However when there are no hires for a certain position, the whole thing blows up. It gives me a "search returned no results" dialog and bails. What I'd like is to get a 0 value on positions that have no hires, and continue counting …

I have a container field of picures. The actual picture is not stored -- just the path name pointing to a jpeg on a network drive. If the picture is deleted, the container field shows a message "The File Cannot Be Found: PicName.jpg" I'd like to find the records where the links are missing so I can delete the record. How can I find them? IsEmpty() doesn't work -- it still thinks something is in there. GetAsText(ContainerField) still shows the pathname to the file, despite the fact that it isn't there. I am trying to email an invoice to a customer and I think I should have a field that a script sets with all the information. However, I can't figure out how to put in the records that are related to the sales id. I know it can be done, I am just too much of a begginer to figure it out. Any ideas? I have a database for of scanned slides. The images are stored on a webserver at: http://domain/slides/thumbnails/x.jpg I have tried creating a calculation in the container field to reference the file from the hard drive at: /webserver/slides/thumbnails/x.jpg This would work if I viewed it from the computer. However, I have the database shared using FileMaker server 7 advanced and the clients can not see the thumbnail image. Also, the faculty who add slides can not view the thumbnail on their machines. In the Attendance database there is a check box to determin if the absence is excused.
