hi all... does anyone know how to duplicate a record along with all its portal records (related, of course). i tried the Duplicate record, but it only duplicates the parent record, and then i tried the Copy all script step to try to copy everything from portal and paste to the new portal... and nothing gets pasted :-(

Hi, I have a database that is used to track job applicants. Each season, we have a "recruitment" period, twice per year. After each season, I'd like to be able to archive those applicants who we're no longer interested in... however, we'd like to be able to pull up their records at a moment's notice. I was thinking that I could add a "season" field.. and then script the navigation and find and "new record" buttons to all stay within the realm of the current season "Fall '04" for example. does that make sense or is there an easier way ? should I perhaps just have an "archive" database that you send records to when they no longer need to be in the "curren…

Hi, My company has developped an application using FM 6. They want to migrate to version 7, but their application is not easy to convert since it is splitted in multiple files (mainly due of the file size limitation). The converted application in FM 7 is REALLY slow and is still fragmented in multiple files. Basically, by using XML export operations in FM 6 and some Java, I want to build a FM script that will be able to create the tables I need with their fields relations. We have just upgraded from FM5.5 to FM7. We are now encountering problems with file sharing which we haven't previously eg... when opening multi relational files there are difficulties opening its relational files with messages like 'busy' and 'open remote'. We have about 4 computers sharing. Can we remove our guest and other 'accounts'. Something seems to be wrong with our sharing setup? Look forward to any suggestions...Thanks

hi, i have a question. is it possible to have a field that can show all the values from 2 other related fields? for example... suppose i have a table that has [Order Number], and yet another table that has [Order Number] as well. now these two tables just has its own independant records and data. then i wish to do accounting which will calculate the expenses of both table... is it possible to have one single [Order Number] that can show all the records from both tables? thanks~

when an user with no access to a layout and its records, and try to view the layout online in IWP, it crashes IE 6 and enters an infinite loop that keeps on displaying a dialog box with only OK. it happens when one has a menu selection that directs the user to try to access the layout... does anyone encounter the similar problem?

Hi All, This is my second post. This forum has proven an invaluable resource to the newbie Rex. Thanks to all that manage it and post. I am trying sort and create a report, records by the frequency of values descending from the most to the least occurances in a given field. Explanation: I have 70 records that have 20 fields describing them. I would like to sort the 70 records by one field according to the frequency that the values occur in the records. I asked a similar question in the AppleScript forum, but realized that the solution doesn't need to be AppleScript if...it doesn't need to be. Perhaps you can think of a better way to accomplish my goal. I have a FileMaker/Excel combination which is used for expense tracking and budget planning. (Think a bare-bones Quicken with some very specific customized reports and uses.) I am building a database for shop work orders I would like to be able to attach shop drawings in PDF format to these work orders. I imagine I should be able to do this by inserting them into a Container Field. The problem I am having is that when I do this all I can see is a faint rendering of the original PDF document. Printing also produces just a fairly faint facsimile of the PDF. This topic has been raised on the Container Field part of this site but does not seem to get answered there. there is a problem when one tries to loop within a portal. the problem is with the end-of-loop detection. Example script: Go to Portal Row [select; Perform without dialog; First] Loop ..... ..... ..... (your operations here) Go to Portal Row [select; Perform without dialog; Next; Exit after last] End Loop The above script enters an infinite loop and creates infinite new portal records in the portal. Is there a fix for this? or am I just scripting something wrong here? I tried taking out Select, but it doesn't do it. I created a Portal record that has two calculations as fields. Both of them require a field that is manually entered; these fields are not with in the portal, and do not repeat themselves. Cost = (Length * Width) / 144 * Extend ( Three Quarter Hidden Field 1 ) Same for the other field. Lenght & Width are repeating fields. Hi, I am new to the forums and have a concern with FMP 7. I have been learning to use it for a project at work for the last month now and so far love it. However, I have noticed something that appears to be a major bug in my FM. In the memory settings, I changed the "Save cache contents" from the default "during idle time" to every 10 minutes. I have found that neither of which are actually doing so. I had FMP running for 3 days straight and added and modified records during that period, and never once did it save the cache. I know this because in the properties of the DB file, the last modified date and time were the last time I had closed the file (3 days prior). …

In the older version of FMP, if I click on a script button in a portal row,say row 5, the script excutes in the record that's in the row 5. In FMP7, the script always excutes in the record in the first row. This problem really bothers me. I'm think about adding a few more steps to the scripts. Maybe I can use a global field to store the portal row number, then go to the related records, then go to the record which record number equals the portal row number. I wonder if I did anything wrong when I converted the database to version 7 that could cause this problem.

I've read other posts but none are working for me. I'm building a simple inventory and want my quantity field to count how many records contain the same model number of the record being browsed. We may have 10 of the same item, but each needs a different record because of different serial numbers. So I tried the count(solution::model) and that is not updating the quantity like I'm expecting it to.

I am still wokring on more reports. I found a useful thing to have on the reports is a little section that contains what exactly i'm looking at. For example, if I was looking up hours for a certain project between certain dates, it is useful to know what dates i'm looking between. Is there any way to set it so that the layout prints out the "Find" contraints used?

When importing photos, I choose link but the paths are coded as absolute. If I burn the fp7 database with it's linked photos to a CD, the images aren't found because it's still looking for my computer's partition/folder structure. I want to make it default to using relative paths when importing images or files into a container field. Any suggestions on where to set this?

I have an Access database that is currently still evolving as some of the uses people want out of it are changing. The last changes made it so I have to throw out alot and rebuild from scratch. It is a relatively small database so this haphazard method is not to bad. I decided to do the current rebuild in both Access and Filemaker because I would prefer to just migrate it over to Filemaker. i was just looking throught the business tracker to get a first look at some filemaker 7 solutions. I'm still not that impressed with the fact that you don't seem to be able to have frames. i.e have a single top menu and a frame below that which you can use to navigate to different layouts to via the menu ...or have I missed something and this is now possible? Hi, I have recently posted this to the filemaker website as a bug. In FileMaker 7, if you have a portal where it needs a scrollbar, and have the portal have no border in between the entries, and you scroll to the last entry. And then press the scroll bar again, it will show that last entry sliding up but it also is in its original position. This problem is resolved however if you have the portal with a border. Hope FileMaker fixes this bug, because it seems kind of dumb to be forced to have a border in portals.

Hi I have need to display a shopping cart where the line item discriptons are from one to three lines long. When I place the items in a portal and leave room for three lines the spacing on the line items that are only one or two lines long have additional white space that i want to eliminate. I have not used FM since V4.0. I seem to remember placing html in a calculation field. Any ideas or hints on how to customize formatting would be greatly appreciated Cheers Gary Weisbrodt

I'm building a database that multiple users will be able to log into online. I've created a table for users. Each user has a unique ID#. I've then created related tables using their ID# as the related field. How do I make it so when a user logs into the database, it recognizes the user and allows them to only work within their ID#? This will hopefully be an easy one, but I search around and couldn't find the answer. I have a DB w/ 20,000 + records. I want to find all records that have duplicate values in a certain field. Say I have a field called 'names'. I want to find all records that have the same value in the name field. I hope that makes sense, here is another illustration. Say there are many of records w/ Jane, Jack, Jeff, Karen in the name filed. I want to do a find, listing all records that are NOT unique in a given field. In this example, it would list records containing Jane, Jack, Jeff, and Karen. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

I'm working on a fund-raising app for a non-profit group. They want to keep track of donations, pledges, etc. They've designed the DB, and I'm building it for them. However, on gift entry, there's one layout for gifts, no matter the type. I have a menu for type: pledge, pledge payment, matching gift, etc. I have a summary field on the gifts db that totals all the gifts by each person. So far, so good. However, if someone enters a pledge for $1000, then pays it off with two payments of $500, the total is going to show up as $2000... it counts every entry as contributing to the total. I'm creating a Task table to store all the tasks I need to do for several areas. I want one place to go to see what I need to do. I have the tables: People, Organizations, Events, Projects, and Opportunities, all of which I want to create tasks for. I want to be able to view the tasks I need to do for all or any of these areas. Hi, I am exporting FMP data into another program which cannot handle any carriage returns. One of the fields has tons of carriage returns in it: some of them are at the end of the text, some in the middle of it, eg. University of Blah Department of XYZ I have tried using the substitute function to replace all carriage returns with spaces, and it works for the ones at the end of the text but not those in the middle. Can anyone help?? I have already tried the FMP experts email list, but no joy there so far. The only person to respond couldn't understand why returns in the middle of text should be any different to those at the end.

Seems that once I convert a file from 5.5 or 6.0 to ver 7, the visuals on screen are too large...by about 25%. I adjust for this by having a script set the viewable screen size to 75%. I'm sure this is the incorrect way to adjust for this but it is a temporary fix. My question is two fold. 1. What is the "standard" screen resolution I should be using? 2. What is the correct way to have converted files show on screen correctly?

The bug I found is about the Substitute Function However everyone can check himself: 1) Create a new fmp7 file 2) Define 2 simple text field (text1 and text2). 3) Create 1 simple Script in which Set field text2 as Substitute(text1; "sometext"; "someothertext") 4) go in browse mode and fill text1 field with text to reach more than 4.000 chars (obviously u must insert the word "sometext" of the Substitute function above.) 5) Run the Script and unfortunately you'll find in text2 field the word "someothertext" doubled (practically "someothertextsomeothertext") Please may anybody check it and give me a feedback? I am trying to create a quote software for my company whereby I have created a unique ID# when the clients name is entered then you switch layouts and enter a room name and then you enter individual line items into a portal under this area. Then you enter a different room name and enter new items in the portal (etc. until you have entered all of the room and items necessary). My problem is keeping the unique ID# populated with the current unique id# in the room layout so that the room names are related to the current client. I can manually enter the number but I cant figure out how to autopopulate this field everytime I create a new record. I need this number to stay the …

I have files which I need to store for 10 years or for ever. If it's for 10 years, file storage will end 12/31 ten years later. Is there a formula which gives me based on the "end"-date of the content of the file (say i.e. October 10, 2004) either an expiry date 12/31/2014 (it must be 12/31...)or - if its for ever - a date like 12/31/2999??

Hope someone is on at the moment (or soon)... I've done something dumb and can't get out of a validation loop. I have a zip code field defined as a required value. In experimenting with some other matters I created a portal that allows the creation of records in that file--but I didn't put in a zip field--nor had I yet added a delete row button. Now I have a record that I can't complete (no zip field) and can't revert or delete. I *do* have another window open for the same file, so I can access ScriptMaker. Is there any way out of this other than pulling the plug? Any help urgently appreciated. I'm leaving it open for now... RDecker

Filemaker 7 has crashed on me a few times... it is a repeatable crash. I'm using FP7 to connect to a file hosted by FP7 Server hosted on OS 10.3.3 The layout I was using was a business letter had a global container field that was supposed to be displaying a graphic (a signature) that was meant to slide up/down with the text of the letter. The graphic was a pdf imported by another user. I've been using Filemaker for years and always used the copy/new record/paste methodfor creating additional related records in a related database. This always bugged me because you would loose whatever you had on your clipboard. Then, I learned the portal trick (goto field, goto last repetition, set field). That is certainly better but it still requires portals in the UI that we don't want. I'm wondering if anyone has found anything new that makes this any better that doesn't require spurrious interface items. Thanks for your help! Eric

Is there a way to NOT use portals if I want to have multiple records for the same ID shown? An example: I've got a participant number. Each participant number is unique. Each participant can have more than one appointment, but they may just have one. I'm trying to design a summary layout. I'm using the participant table to show most of the data but there are other tables from which I'd like to pull out data. As I said, each person can have more than one appointment but I can't figure out how to get the layout to show me more than one row if I don't use a portal. Is this the only way to get a repeating field?

I have a database that is being used on both Mac OS X and Windows NT 2000. In one of the tables I have an 'insert file' button. This allows the user to insert a .pdf file in the database stored as a reference. Here's the problem: When a Mac user uses the insert file button, other Mac users can access the file fine, but when a Windows user tries to access the same file, a 'file not found' error appears. The exact opposite is true if a Windows user is the one who inserts the file. I know about hard wiring file paths for individual files. Hello, I have a self join relationship that I use to find a value in a field that the user requests. This all works great, except when I export to either XML or Excel. My numbers are not formated. They are just like I entered them. I have it relating to a layout were the numbers are formated and I have make sure the check box is checked to pass on the formating to the export. This is driving me crazy, the same export procedure works great if the export does not need to be related by a self join. What am I missing. Thanks for your help on this.

Hello, I develop database applications using FoxBASE+/mac 2.0.1. This is a very very old database system that is nearing the end of the road (even though it works in Classic.) Ok, I'm new to Filemaker, and fairly new to databases in general. Here is my setup: I have a table called "Master List". This is a list of all contacts. I want to have 2 other tables, "Members" and "Leaders". Those contacts in the "Master List" that are members, I would like to dynamically appear in the "Members" table, and likewise, those contacts in the "Master List" that are leaders, I would like to dynamically appear in the "Leaders" table. I am having a problem with a calculation that is not working on the repetitions of a repeating field. it is to track a magazine subscription info. it works like this: 1. a date is entered in the 'invoice paid date' field 2. a field called 'first sub issue' then looks up the next value in another table which has all the dates for every issue published. [ie, if invoice was paid on 10/5/2004 and the next issue was published on 20/5/2004 and this is issue number 4, this will be the calculation result.] 3. a field called 'last sub issue' simply calculates 'first sub issue'+9. Hey guys, I have used FM5.5 in the past, but very, very limited stuff. If you look at the FM7 Inventory template you can see a tab at the bottom that says Acquired Info, what I want to do is add another tab to the right of that that says Resale Info and another to the right with Installation Info. Each tab will have it's own information pertaining to the product such as MSRP and some end-user related notes under Resale Info and a product list ( installation accessories, X Recommended X Required) with links to those Inventory items as well as installation notes under the Installation Info tab. I'm new to FM but not new to databasing. I've got experience designing and programming PHP/mySQL databases, so I'm pretty decent at coding. I don't love it but I can do it. I'm currently working on a database for my clinic so that we can track patients. It's pretty basic stuff, thus far. Just contact info, dosing information, schedules. Any tips on troubleshooting this one? (I'm prob. doing something wrong...) I have a field validated and entered with a value list (pop up list) as either Yes or No. I can find based on those values manually with no problem, but when I try to script it, I get an error message, "No valid criteria." In the Find step of the script I specify "Perform Find [Restore]" amd specify: Finances::cleared: ["No"]. ('Finances' is the filename; 'cleared' is the field name.) I've also tried it with: [="No"]. Thanks to Mr. Brill, I have series of Find and Constrain Record Scripts running on my data. Is it possible to enter text on the page that will state which scripts are currently running. I would like a summary of my sorts to appear in the margin. For example: Data sorted by 1) Technical Success; 2) Males) 3) Diabetics; etc. So that as the user examines the data, he knows the constraints on his data. Is there a function such as the <<field>> function that would print the script name on the screen? Thanks.

I'm creating a grade book. I have a table that contains the scores of each graded item for all students, in all of my classes. This includes homework, quizzes, tests, final exam, labs, etc.. Each class may have a different set of graded items (some classes may not have a lab, for example). So in this table, I have a student ID, a class ID, the graded item category and the score. In a related table, I have a list of my students and on a layout I can summarize, using a portal, the total and average that each student has earned for each graded item category. No problem. Hey guys, I am a die hard MS Access man, but recently heard about FileMaker and am interested. I have a large database that contains a subjects photo and basic information with subreports containing more photos and detailed information. My questions are this, Can FileMaker handle large number of photos and info per person like Access? Do the databases become huge and bloated? I currently store only the links to photos in my databases to keep them very small and easy to work with? Any help is appreciated before I drop any cash. I have the trial version now to tinker with. I recently moved (copied) an FP7 database containing over 6000 records of linked images off of an external drive and onto a hard drive so that I can serve it with FMS 7. I am hoping that the images can remain on the external drive. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might update those links so that the images work again? Or maybe I need to re-think the structure of this database all together? Or is it possible to serve the original copy right off of the external drive, bypassing the need to correct the links? I guess this topic is relevant in the FMS 7 forum as well ...

Hi. Never been a problem to enter a range for a query. Now I come across a solution where I should enter such a range AS DATA in browse (eg valid between the ages 0 and 12). In the past I used to work around this with 2 fields (begin and end of range) and I wondered if someone had tried something else? Range doesnt seem to work in browse. BTW, any idea to enter the data 'infinite'?? and thus (combining both questions) how to enter something like 'valid between age 50 and death?' Regards to every reader.

Can anyone help me write a script that allows me to find a set of records within the last found set. I have 100 total records for surgical procedures. I have a spreadsheet with totals for # of successes, # of males, # of females, average age, race, diabetics, smokers, etc. I have written scripts that will find just the number of successes and show the totals of males, females, etc. Now within that found set, I would like to further break down the data. Can anyone help me with the Remote Kerrnal? I have a database that I have converted and beefed up for rollout. Some of the files were FM 6 and 5, I converted and cleaned them up in FM 7 had them working perfectly. I then installed FM 7 on an OSX machine, I found the files on a client machine, I can open the files. however I cannot modify the records. I am told the remote kernal may be bad. any suggestions? I am also shy now to work too much in fm 7 not knowing when the kernal is going to be good or bad. Please help - I have 100's of hours in this project.

I have a Purchases DB containing 2 tables, the first table (Purchases) contains the order information and the second table (purchasesItems) contains the line items to that order via a relationship [PurchaseOrderNumber = PurchaseOrderNumber]. My Question: Is there a way show related line items from the current found set in the Purchases table. Goal: Easily convert all ole objects imported into plain text. Background: MSAccess database/table has ole objects which is used to store RTF (Rich Text Formatted) data. I have a contact table with a contactID (key) and e-mails, phones, etc. I have a student table with various data. Hi all, I'm trying to use valueListItems(relatedField) to record data from a related field. However, this command only return distinct items. The function will ignore any item that is similar. For example: If I have 2 items: "01/01/04" and "01/01/04", valueListItems only record one "01/01/04" and ignore the other. Does anyone know how can I get around this problem? Thanks, H.P.

For Windows version of FileMaker Pro 7 trial version (English) when I run the updater the following Windows Installer error message comes up - 'This patch package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this a valid Windows Installer patch package.' FileMaker Pro 7 and all other applications are closed. I wasn't asked to put in the original Windows XP disks. The patch package download is 'fmp_70v2_win_updater.zip' and 114,088 KB in size. There are still 24 days to go on this trial version. The only thing I can think that might cause this is there's also FileMaker Pro 6 on this computer. Any suggestions?

Hi I have a problem where the bounding box that is the actual field under a button (if it is a graphical button) shows up when I don't want it to. Is there a way to turn those off? They are just lines that indicate the actual field of "hotspot" under the button. Thanks STan
