How can I open a file sent to me in 5.5 when I'm using 4.3 - or can it not be done??

Not possible, get 5.x or 6.x version of the software.

If you just need the data, you could have them export the file as Tab Seperated Text, then use that file to create a new file in FMP 4.3.
