Data updated montly but need to see history

I have a Drug database that we will be updating on a monthly basis however I need to update this data but be able to see the previous month's data. Any ideas on the best way to attack this problem. My thoughts are maybe have a field with the currect update version ie, month but this will be a rather large database and I don't know how this will affect performance. My guess is probably close to 250,000 records x 24 could be quite large. Any ideas

Speed of machines? Speed of server?

Just find? Just Lookups? Any sorting?

How long do you need history?

On my machine FM is doing fine with 2Mil+ records
