Is there any way to change the location FileMaker server uses for hosting files? I do not want my data files stored on the same partition as all the applications.

Server 7 allows for that automatically. Server 5/5.5 needs the files in its own folder for automatic startup. Two ways around that:

- put shortcuts to the files in the FMS folder. The files themselves can be anywhere

- or run a batch/VBscript file to instruct FMS after it launched to open the files from their location

A word of caution: wherever the files are, don't enable OS file sharing on them or the folder or the parent folder where they live. There's no faster way to corrupt the files than that.

You are still working with server 5.5?

Hello, yes I am still working with FMserver 5.5. The problem is I have also FMpro 6...if i install fmserver 8 it will work?

I found a used copy on ebay of FM server 8 upgrade. So I am interested to buy it (is cheaper that a new version of the same) but i am not secure if filemaker pro 6 will work then

No, FMS 8 uses the ".fp7" file format FM6 still uses the old ".fp5" file format.  You can convert your files but then you also need the FM8 client, not FM6
