Hi all,

Before I get too far into things and potentially destroy a good database, I wanted to check to see if there are any known issues around opening a v7 fmp db in v8, then re-opening it in v7? We are unfortunately running both versions at the moment. I've tested this and it appears to be fine, but would love to get confirmation around this from other users.

many thanks,

I havent seen any issues, nor do I think there should be any issues. However, if you use some of the new features of 8 such as calendar, tabs, etc. It will not work when opened in 7.

Hi there,

Thanks very much, I will do a bit more testing, but now feel more comfortable about proceeding with less worry. :)

thanks!

I'll give you one quirk...once you start using FM8 features in a database, don't try to run a Database report using FM7. You get some very weird error messages and no usefull report (it generates the files, but they're all empty)...a strange thing to try, but it made sense at the time.

It's hard to nail down a specific reason why a file becomes corrupted. It's kind of like Murphy's Law when it comes to FileMaker. However, this is why you need a good backup system in place. I would speculate that just using a file in one version or the other will not make it become corrupt.

I recall that someone has pointed out that v8 is better at handling some of the things that v7 would have crashed over. Also, others have noted that a file that wouldn't open any more in version 7, would open in v8.

However, there is no protection from corruption, only ways to protect your self when it happens.
