loren s Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 Help my Filemaker 8 files are getting to huge file size wise. Example I have a picture database with images imported as small little 156 kb file images jpg.. But the database file is now at 200 megs with only 78 images in it. Even if I make a copy of the file and delete all records and close the file and check the filer size it still retains the file size with zero records.... Soooo, how can I either clean up the file. Or make a duplicate with no records and data in it just the interface and databases ....
mr_vodka Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 Hi Loren, You can use "save a copy as..." with the clone option to make a copy of the file without the data. If you are talking about a file for your data only, check out the 'Seperation Model' forums for numerous posts on it.
Fenton Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 The "Separation Model" is a good idea for some things, but I think in this simple case all you need is a separate file for the pictures, with an ID to tie them together. If you check "Allow creation of related records" in the relationship then you can still Insert Picture in the layout of the main data table to create new picture records, in either a related field, or the related field in a portal (for multiple pictures per data record). Use Insert Picture, and choose the file, do not just copy/paste an open image. I think it does a better job (though I don't really know the specifics).
loren s Posted December 22, 2005 Author Posted December 22, 2005 many thank yous, it helped but it is still stupid huge.. Hmmmmm.... Well I have to use a one file model since the file has to be shipped around constantly out of house... Oh well
Sergeant Ron Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 You can also try saving your current file as a compacted (smaller) copy. Thats woked quitre for me in the past.
