working.account Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Hello everyone, I am purchasing a new laptop to handle my 9 gig filemaker DB. What is a good processor to get? Does having mroe RAM increase productivity of filemaker? Thanks!
Ender Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 FileMaker will run well on any new machine with a supported OS. The app itself doesn't require much RAM for client operations or for development.
John May - Point In Space Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 (edited) Don't buy something with Vista. IMHO, get a Mac - they're so much more elegant than anything else out there, and the price/power ratio is quite competative with PCs these days. Plus Parallels/Boot Camp lets you run Windows if need be - no way to run OS X on a PC. You can get a really good deal on a refurb right now from the Special Deals section of store.apple.com too. - John Edited March 20, 2007 by Guest
Fitch Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 For best FileMaker performance, generally HD > CPU > RAM. Not much you can do about a laptop HD, but even a "low-end" new laptop these days will run FileMaker just fine. You won't waste your money on a fast CPU, and then if you have the budget add some RAM. I'm partial to Macs for the reasons posted above.
John May - Point In Space Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 You can be sure to get at least a 5400rpm laptop drive, which I believe all Macs include these days. There are even some 7200rpms out now, though they result in smaller drive sizes it seems. - John
