Newbies dobrorod Posted October 24, 2000 Newbies Posted October 24, 2000 We have installed FM Server 5 on a Win2K dedicated workstation. Have installed FM PRO 5 on win95, win98 and win NT 4.0 Workstations. The Win 95/98 Workstations work fine and access speed is great. The Win NT 4.0 (with Sp 5 or SP 6 installed) are painfully slow. The operator can go for coffee while it loads. All workstations are set up identical with the exception of the OS. How can this be fixed without reverting the NT 4.0 machines to Win98 ? UPDATE ____ The NT machines in question have Novell Client for NT installed (Ver 4.8). Without the Novell Client installed access to Filemaker is at a good speed. When Novell Client is installed access is SLOOOOOOW. Any fixes that anyone knows of ? [This message has been edited by dobrorod (edited October 25, 2000).]
Vaughan Posted October 25, 2000 Posted October 25, 2000 Not being expert (or even novice) in NT I can only suggest some basic trouble shooting: check the network card. Move the PC to another outlet etc. If you don't get any (other) answers it may be because you told us not to suggest you go to Win98. ;-(
danjacoby Posted October 25, 2000 Posted October 25, 2000 Switch to Mac. Well, it does avoid "reverting ... to Win98".
DykstrL Posted October 25, 2000 Posted October 25, 2000 I'm not sure why you need to run Novell client on a dedicated FileMaker Server. Make sure your clients are accessing the files through the Hosts portion of FMPRO5 and not through a volume share - that WILL make the files run VERY slow. We are running several FMPRO5 servers on NT4+sp6 and they are very fast.

We have the same set ups on the WIN95 and 98 machines with no problems. We are running FMPRO through the Hosts mode and not the volume share mode. FMPRO is set up for TCP/IP and so are the Novell Clients. Without the Novell Client installed workstation access to the FM Sever is excellent. The problem occurrs when we load the Novell Client, a necessary evil for accessing our Novell Servers.
