Is there anyway to store a PDF file in a field within a FM5 data base?

Can't do it on a Mac. Apparently, the "Insert Object" script step (available on Windows only) can do the trick, but nothing on the Mac.

Geez, who owns this software, anyway?

Well this is really a Microsoft issue. The reason that this is possible at all is due to OLE, or Object Linking and Embedding. This is a technology developed by MS for storing documents within other documents.

It is part of the the Windows environment, and thus available to all Windows applications. It is also part of the MS Office for Mac suite of application, but available only within them.

All in all this is one of Microsoft's best technologies and has possibilities on all platforms and OSs, however it is hamstrung by the Windows stranglehold.

Funny how MS has a bunch of great technologies all choked nearly to death by Windows.
