I was reading about it in a couple of places today whilst I am reading though fm's documentation and sites blogging about fm 13. 

As far as I can tell it means that they have consolidated some of the services that were running in FM12 to run across fewer ports in FM13

yeah but the rational behind this was modularity and robustness from crashes, I think at least.

FileMaker Server has slowly shifted the amount of work being done, more back to the server for some things. As a result, the issues that caused them to split to various ports are probably no longer an issue.
