Hi All,

I have a couple of computers here where I cannot see the databases in the "Hosts" dialog box. I have gone through the technet articles on FileMaker's support page and found an article, "106449" and none of the reasons explained in there refer to me. I have completely unistalled FileMaker 5.5 and removed all registry enteries. I then re-installed FM 5.5, but still I cannot see the databases. I CAN ONLY see the databases, if I "specify host" and put in the server name.

Any clues anyone?

Thanks

So you can see the hosted databases, only they don't appear in the top panel of the Hosts window?

If all machines are not on the same subnet mask, the FileMaker Server will not show up as a local host. My guess is those machines that do not see the server as a local host are in a different subnet.

Thanks for the replies. But, I compared the network settings on two machines, a machine that can see the databases and a machine that cannot see the databases. The network settings are indentical. DNS and Subnet Mask is the same on both computers, even the server has the same settings. This is not isolated to just W2K clients. I got a call this morning from a user who has a Windows 98 machine and complained about not being able to see the databases.

I am open for more suggestions and ideas.

Thanks.

I had read these posts and others regarding shared files disappearing from the host list with detachment and Macintosh smugness until last night. Administering a new T1 setup on a clients G4 Mac server, I connected the client's new hardware router/firewall and attempted to get it configured. It crashed FileMaker (without damage), and after several frustrating after hour hours I disconnected the router and reset the server to its pre-router setup. Normal file sharing, including AppleTalk and TCP/IP, but when I loaded up FileMaker shared files (TCP/IP) they were invisible to all machines, both Mac and Windows, on the network. In my case I solved the problem by restoring the System folder from a tape backup from last week, but I spent hours trying to isolate the problem without success. I believed it had to do with the TCP/IP setup or preferences but replacing the extensions and pref files did no good. Perhaps it was a case of What I Know Ain't. I sure would like to know what gives with TCP/IP that gives FileMaker fits. The interesting thing is that other network stuff I use that relies on TCP/IP worked fine. Puzzle.

Sorry this does not give any solution, but at least I am much less arrogant about the Mac's network implementation.
