FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

Is there a way to have one computer without filemaker 5 Pro. CALL up another computer with fm and stay linked all day? There's a video store who have an old unix database setup that's used to link 2 stores together for rentals and stuff. The guy dosen't want to hafta have both comps dialup on the internet because the location is in a town that only has one local number internet access provider, and they run a very unstable service. Ya can't log on at times (password server is down), busy signals etc... BTW, the computers both run win 98 and currently have no networking abilities other than what win 98 might provide. All of a sudden it has become so sluggish.As examples, I can't select a word by double clicking; it takes 6 seconds to open an item in the Menu; copy/paste takes 7 seconds ;if there is a relationship, well, it's an eternity ;in fact, everything is slowed down. Hi All-- I am trying to think of a clever way to add dashes to a field. For example, I have a field called telephone # which contains 7 digits. I have another field called telephone no dash. Currently, telephone dash is the field users will be doing data entry. The telephone # field is a calculation field = left(telephone no dash,3) & "-" & right(telephone no dash,4). If a user enters 2345678 in the telephone no dash field, 234-4578 will be calculated. Now my dilema...I want to give the users the hidden feeling that this is automatic. I have a file of songs and a file where of dates and song that were used. I want to be able to create a new record in the file of dates and then search the file of songs and add ones to be used to the new record that contains the date. I had thought of using a repeating field that I would click on and it would take me to a search screen where I would then have a pop up portal of songs to choose. The song chosen would be copied and pasted into the next blank repeating field. I could do as many or as few as I needed. This was working except I couldn't figure out how to get the copied data to go into the next blank repearting field. Well I suppose I could spend another day…

About 200 users at 8 sites input data into their subset of records three times a year through a web interface. At a set time after input, I have to print one report from each record. The users then distribute these hard copies to their clients. I would also like to run another print job and write each record to an individual PDF file, and name that file with values from one or two fields from that record. I have a network of Macs (G4 400s & 500s, and two iMac DVSEs) When I work LOCALLY, and when I am trying to import 12,000 records into a existing DB of around 30,000 records or if I am just deleting records, every once in a while I get the error messge "Sorry FM is unable to update the disk this file is on. Click continue to try again, or click Quit and copy this file to another disk." I haven't seen this before, and it doesn't matter what computers the DBs are on. Hi, I'm trying to configure Lasso to work with Dreamweaver and FMP on Windows 2000. When I go to Edit> Preference> Application and try to configure the Web companion to change the port from 80 to 591 I get a message saying: 'The webcompanion cannot share files over the web because of a network error (-3)' No other explanation given. Can someone please help me sort this? Do I need to set the TCP/IP address of the local computer? If so how do I do that on Win 2000? The localhost/lasso bit works fine. Harmen

Win98 Converting Solution From FM4 to FM5 I have FM Developed 4.0v3. and my solutions will not convert propertly to FMP5v3. I can create a new solution in FM5.0v3 and everything works fine. When I convert my old FM4 solutions they will crash when I print and some scripts will cause a crash. This makes my solutions totaly unsable in FM5v3. Is there a fix to the conversion problem? One of my clients is finally upgrading their old coal fired server (Apple workgroup server 130Mhz) to a new machine. Because of the number of users involved they don't want to upgrade the software right now. So, they will stay with version 3 on the new computer. My question: Has anyone experienced compatability problems with FM Server 3 and OS9 ? If so, what version of OS is recommended?

I am usinging Filemaker 3.0 with Windows98 operating system. I have a "customer" and a "sales order" database. I have created a script (actually two scripts) that go from the customer database to the sales order database. Basically, it is desigend so the sales clerk can find the customer information, then hit a button which opens a sales slip which has the customer information on the top of the order form. Hi ! I have a problem. Does anyone know's Filemaker Pro 5 support russian language ? The problem is when I try to fill some form in my web browser (in russian language) and put all data to a database, in Filemaker I see some characters which are not cyrillic strings. I could choose a font in Filemaker and write on russian, but when I try to put some information through the web into database, I have this problem. As any patch for Filemaker which have a multilanguage support. As I understand my version of Filemaker Pro 5 support only English, German, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, French languages. Hello all, I'm using Filemaker 4.0 on an NT 4 Server running service pack 4. A couple weeks ago they had a problem whereby Filemaker was open, the databases were open and shared, but when they clicked hosts, they saw nothing. I wasn't there, so I told them to close Filemaker, reopen it, and open the databases, and this worked. Yesterday the same thing happened. I'm wondering if this is some sorta TCP/IP problem or what? I am trying to define a field to be calculated based on another field's value(s) which happens to be a checkbox. I can get the results I am looking for by evaluating only one of the checkbox options (if only one is checked off, where there are more than one options checked off, this calculation will not work), but I am having trouble figuring out what the syntax would be to find all of the field_name(s) where checkbox = (option)3 whether or not the checkbox is checked for just option 3 or if it is checked for option 2 and 3, 1 and 3 or 1, 2 and 3. I am sharing the FMP5 database (as a guest) from the Win2K server (the host). The print devices of the win2k were shared and working fine..(when i print from other softwares, e.g. word2k) However, I have a printing problem with FMP5. When i use HP LaserJet 6L(PCL) to print, it give me a blank page! When i use Xerox DocuPrint P8ex to print, it printed what i want. I spent some big bucks on FMP5 Developer. Now I've got two of my own PCs that I use networked and I wanted to share a database for my own personal use. When I installed FMP5 on each machine and then tried to open the second machines software while the first was runnign it gives me an error message that I can't do that with the licenses! Hello, I just figured something out that may interest a few people. It's certainly no cure for cancer but if you're looking for an easy way to hookup a bar code scanner to your computer and test out some things with it on Filemaker, it's pretty neat. All ya need to do is goto Radio Shack and get their Cue Cat bar code reader, they give 'em away for free. It is very IMPORTANT tho that you just connect the scanner and don't install their software driver. The scanner itself plugs into the back of your computer where your keyboard is connected and then ya connect your keyboard into the 'Y' cable on the mouse. That's all there is to it. I have installed FMPro 5 on W2000 and it does not run. An hour glass comes up and program appears to be starting but then nothing. In Task Manager program is running as a process. In Safe Mode program will run. Anyone know of any possible issues. I have tried with LAN card disabled and with basic VGA monitor driver as both these have been suggested as possible problems. I am having a problem with fm5 on my powerbook 400. When I quit, it is very slow in doing so and does it "rythmically". Almost like it is going to the hard drive and performing some function first. Our office consists of 2 Apple G3 Powermacs, 2 IBMThinkpads running Win98, and one more Thinkpad running Win2000. The database resides on a server running WinNT4.0 Recently, we began having trouble. It seems that the Win98 clients cannot open the database regularly. We aren't sure if it is just first thing in the morning (after an overnight backup ran) or if it's any time after the Win2K client has opened the database. I am helping a user setup a 2 file related application on 2 win2k pro machines. He has 2 seperate license of FM v5 installed on both machines, opened and verified that multi-user is selected on both files on the host machine and also that local data access companion is checked. He has shared the folder of the host machine allowing full control to the everyone group and has added everyone group to the security permissions of the folder with full control. I've been searching for a Filemaker file that has a lyout already set up for the HCFA 1500 and UB 92, but no luck. Unless I can find one, I'll have to recreate the wheel. It seems there are all sorts of Filemaker meidcal office solutions out there that contain the HCFA1500 and UB92, but they are all part of a comprehensive billing software that cost an arm and leg. I have been using FM5 for our Customer Support Database for a few weeks now, having upgraded from FM3. I have had no problems with FM5 until yesterday where the application started crashing randomly while carrying out scripts. One script simply makes a SEND call to an Adobe Acrobat document for viewing statistics. I saw no problem in doing this as FM3 worked without error. This morning however when I open my main database I get an "Exception Error" once the file starts to load. Now, I need to change some password privilages; I closed the files using the remote administration, but when I open the file seperately, and come to the File menu the "Define Fields", "Define Value Lists ", "Define Relationships" options are dimmed. We are designing a database that my wife will use on film production work. She is a script supervisor and must track many items, including script pages. Here's our dilema. Script pages are dealt with in eighths. So, if you are calculating pages, you might have 2 and 1/8 pages, or 3 and 3/8's pages, etc. As part of her job, my wife each day has to track a lot of information related to script pages--total pages shot, total pages added to the script, total pages deleted from the script, etc. We'd like to have her be able to do this within the the database we are creating. Can FM generate random passwords containing both "alphabetical" and "numerical" units? For example: f3ds4s2 I've figured out how to generate random numerical "PIN" numbers. I know I can make a button and attach the script that way, but if the user selects the pulldown menu in filemaker and chooses to add a new record, the script wont execute. Every time I have a new record made, I need to run a script that will cycle thru EVERY record and increment an Order Field I have. I need the script to first sort the "Assignments ID" then fill up the "Set Order" fields in every record from start to end in increments of 1. While running large (1000+ record) summary pages, the summary fields never stop calculating. When the last summary field finishes, the first one starts again. This was not a problem in the past, and we have not changed the calculations. Any Ideas? We have recently converted to FM 5.03 from FM 3-4 and from Server 3 to 5, but this problem seems to have occured before the migration.

I am trying to implement a script that before running will ask for the user to enter their name and password. These entries need to be checked against another table/list and if their entries to not match the ones in the list, the script won't run. If it does match, then it will run. It was suggested to me that I use lookups.. but I am not sure that is the right option, since I am not really wanting to copy the name/password information into the current record.. I just want to make the check before the script runs. ANY HELP

I created a solution in FM 4 and it works great on the mac and win 9x platform. Our school district has moved to the win 2k platform. When I package and deliver the solution to the win2k machines most users have errors, and some don't. The errors range from printing problems to multiple installation. Printing problem-Users that use the initial data file have no problem. Some users that print and had issues now when they try to print they get errors and the fm solution quits. This is a classic many to many relationship problem. A song can be in many books (with a different page number in each) and a book can contain many songs. You will need a "join" file in which a record is a book/song occurrence. This file would contain the page number for the occurrence of a song in a given book. This is much like the classic example of classes and students (a student can be in many classes and classses have many students). A portal in the Book database would display records with the Book Number of the current record from the "Join" file (not the Songs file), this way the page number would be for just the current book. Well I am one frustrated puppy... I have a solution based on FM 4.0 v3 running on WIN98. In that solution there is a script step "Open URL" .... this works fine until I bind the solution using SDK v6. When I attempt to run the script (after it is bound), I get an error message saying that the script does not exist. Or script error. What is going on here? Am I doing something wrong? I have made sure that all available "System" (from SDK) files are included in the bound solution. Could you please help?

I have a problem that is driving me crazy. Here's the deal: I have a simple text field on a layout. When I print the layout, the field prints, but without any text (ie the borders are there, but no text). I am using filemaker unlimited, WSC-IIS conector, Win 2000 server, IIS 5.0. In order for filemaker to publish databases on the web, I have to open the database files for it to work. So if I whant several databases, do I have to open alll of them in ordert to work, or am I not configuring correctly the server. Is this ok!? I can create a container field in the filemakerpro5 database and link with a paperport documents so that i can open the paperport document by double click the icon in that field. We are running FMP5 in our LAN (Saved in the server and shared for users). The problem is that users cannot open the paperport data concurrently.(e.g. >1 users opening a word2000 document at the same time.) I have try using paperport viewer but it doesn't work with FMP5! I've already developed a basic version using Filemaker Pro 5 (Mac) but before investing more hours into the database, I wondered whether there is something that is pre-existing to do this exact job. I have set up a script to update my records over an ethernet network from one file to another using the updating records portion of "import records". My problem is that is is intolerably slow. I've seen several posts concerning the scroll wheel mouse, but now I can't find them. Anyway, I was doing some experimenting and found out some of the behaviors of a scroll wheel mouse with FileMaker. First, other than manually going into the mouse software setup and deisabling the wheel, you can't disable it in FileMaker, however most you probably already know that. If a layout is set to View and Form, the wheel toggles through the records in the file. If it is set to View as List or View as Table, the wheel scrolls up and down the display, similar to the behavior on most other programs, but does not change the current record. What is the best way to use/copy the Trailing grand summary on a report to use in another file? (If it is possible)! Thanks in advance, wakely

We have 22 stations using FMPro 5.0/Server ranging from G4's to 7100's. Most are using OS 9.1, some 9.04. On one 7200/180 using OS 9.04, it will not recognise certain fonts. It has no problem with the fonts in other applications (Word 2001), screen or printing. I have re-installed FMpro, trashed the FMPro font prefs, re-installed all fonts...but no change. I have no problems with any other station in the office. The FMPro database is stored on a network server. Please help!!null

Hi All--- I am currently working on tons of reports in FileMaker 5.0. Although they look good to print for the clients, some have requested them emailed to them. However, they do not have FileMaker..... I have heard of a software that will be able to convert reports in FileMaker to .PDF files for people without FileMaker to view. I have already create a e-mail adress for my forum and I need to create a DB who take all the messages who are send on this e-mail adress and store it. I have 2 databases setup, for simplicity I'll call them 'A' and 'B'. 'A' has a relation with 'b', their product id's are connected. There isn't any problem here, It's later, when I added 'Customer Notes' field to database B. If I add a new record to 'A' then if there was any text in "B's" Cust. Notes field, it'll be copied correctly into 'A". If I goto a field that was created BEFORE I added the relationship (cust notes in 'b') then the relationship is still empty, (because i didn't add anything to it yet) but if I goto 'B' and enter in notes on that customer, and them go back to 'A' it's still blank. HELP!! I am trying to import an EPS file but I get an error saying "FM cannot complete the operation because of an OLE (0x80010001) error" What does this mean? I really need this files for the graphics. And how do I import fonts that were used on the MAC? (I have the font files but my PC doesn't recognize them as font files.) Help! J.

In helping a client with some computer problems, I needed to delete preferences for FM 3.05. Now the screen view of form page is smaller than previously. as i am not well versed in FM, I'm not sure how to get the full view back. According to the book there should be a selection under preferences for view, but when i open preferences, that schoice is no where to be found. I know that you can increase the view size from 100% to 150%, but 150% is too big and 100% does seem a bit small (it only fills about 3/4 of an imac screen). Any help is appreciated. Jeff

I am new to this forum, so please bear with me. I am hving a problem with accessing the layout menu dropdown list (the one above the graphical rolodex file). The button depresses, but no drop-down menu appears. I have made sure that the layouts are all checked--indicating that they are to appear in the layout menu. The only way to access the layouts is to be in layout mode, and to click page by page down the rolodex (or to use buttons that are included in layout screens). The data is stored on a network server. Other computers accessing this database do not have this problem. I have reloaded FM Pro on the computer in question with the problem remaining. Any suggestions fo…

Hi, All-- I have a solution with 3Files. The first file is Projects, which contains information on current and past projects. It has a Project ID for each project. The second is Personnel. It contains all the personnel working on either one project or several at the same time. Each personnel is assigned a Personnel ID. The third is Billing which shows all Bills on both projects and personnel, but each new record is based on the personnel. All the information for billing is collected back into a portal in Projects. I want to be able to collect all the data for a particual personnel and show all that info in the Projects portal, however, it is showing me several records fo…

Is anyone else having problems moving objects when working in Classic? Everything else seems to be fine, but moving and sizing graphics is very jerky, have to move in small increments. Any word on when FMP for osx will be released?

I've created several scripts to manipulate imported data from a Lotus worksheet. One of the functions is to delete duplicate records that were imported. When I run the script, it finds the duplicates and performs the deletion. The problem is, it requests input (confirmation of delete) from the user for every record it needs to delete. Is there a way (in the script) for me to bypass the record deletion prompt?

I need to rotate an entire layout by 180 degrees, so that I don't have to spin the page around before stapling it to the preceding page (the first one is portrait, the second is landscape). Everything will rotate using the Rotate command in the Arrange menu, except for the portal. I can't find any way to rotate portals. ... and no, I can't change the layouts so that both pages print the same way; the invoice page has to be portrait, and the financial summary has to be landscape. I'm new to Filemaker, so please bear with me (no pun intended). Here's the situation... I have an invoice file, and a parts entry (inventory entry) file. I buy (say a qty. of 5) of a part and enter the information & qty. into the parts entry file. When I need to write up an invoice for someone buying one of the parts, obviously the inventory should then update to show the "on hand" quantity as one less. My question is this... is there a formula/relationship setup that will let me do this? By all means feel free to e-mail me with as much info. as you can. As I said, I'me very new to all of this. I have a found set of records. How do I code a script to print each record on a separate page. My current code will print some of the found set on individual pages and the other pages will be printed with two or more records on the page. I am using FM Developer 4.0 on my G4 Mac. I have multiple users scattered over the planet. I need to be able to keep up with all changes to their databases (runtime solutions) on a main database that I keep at home office. As they make changes I can update those records at home. If they create new records They are tagged and The main server creates a new record. That's what I'm thinking. How do I get the stuff out of the runtimes and tranfered to my main system? Poosible hundreds of people doing this each business day. Any plugin ideas or other ideas? Thanks

I had reinstalled FM5 (yes, it is a licensed version) on my new computer and everything seems OK. Suddenly I cannot start FM anymore. Would appreciate any advice.

Was connecting to DB on enet LAN installed X and FM tells me file wasn't closed need to recover blah blah. It tries but then quits and tells me something about not locking the file. Anybody?
