I'm developing an application that requires someone enter lab test results into it. There are often 30 or so numbers to enter from any given lab report. Unfortunately, different labs have different formats, including the order of the various results. The specifications for my application call for the user to be able to set-up the order of the fields for data entry. I assume that a user would just do this one time only - or very rarely - as users would change labs rarely. One thing that is NOT an option, would be to hard-code it in a few different formats. Hi all, Is there a way to give the user "controlled" design access to a label layout? I want the user to be able to adjust the field positions on the label layout, so i want to create a button that would "switch to layout view" for that specific label layout, pause the running script, let the user adjust field position (not allow any adding or removing) then return to the main menu. Hello, We manufacture windows and are trying to make order entry system. We have a Glass Order that you put in the Quantity and the sizes and then we have would like to make a assembly list that shows all the components you need to make each size. We would like to be able for it to copy the sizes and Qty. into the assembly lists at a push of the button. Do you have any Ideas on how you would do this I would greatly appreciate it. Anyone else have troubles with how drawn objects appear in FMP? below are pics of the same fields in Layout Mode then in Browse Mode. Anyone else get the shrinking Rectangle problems? If you look closely you will also see the Top field has a nice clean line where the top and right engraved edges meet. The field on the bottom has a jagged edge. Why are number fields sometimes left justified when placed on layouts? I would think they would automatically be right justified but they aren't, and you can't change the justification by selecting Text Format. I placed a few fields on a layout and the number field was left justified. I selected all the fields changed the font size to a larger size. Everything became right justified then. Can't figure out what causes this erratic behavior. The Mad Jammer

Happy 2005 everyone! I'm looking for a way to have FileMaker print two different layouts to a single PDF file. I currently have to click "Save as PDF" for the first layout in OS X's Print dialog box, save it to my hard drive, then execute a second script to get the second part of my PDF created (with another click on "Save as PDF") and finally merge the two parts using Acrobat Pro 6.0.2. Is there a way to get FM to save directly to a PDF file? Can I also get FM to append pages to an existing PDF file instead of doing a manual merge in Acrobat?

I am really new at this; I bought Using FileMaker 7, but I can't find the answer. We have a database of clients, and I want to write letters within FileMaker, then save the merged letter to the client's layout in a container field. I can set up the form letter and the container field just fine, but how do I save the individual letter? I've Googled,and everything I've found relates to ancient FileMaker versions. Many thanks.

Hi everyone, I like using the send mail feature and scripting for the entire pages contents to be copied into a field so that I can specify this field as being the BODY TEXT of the email. Nice But no formatting at all except for carridge returns. Isn't there a way of including right justified tabs and font size, etc so that I can create an emailable, nice looking invoice document or quotation? Our company has a mixture of Macs and Windows XP machines. I have several layouts with headers set top print at the top of each printed page. If my layout is sized to be printed in two pages, the Mac prints exactly two pages. However, the Windows XP machines print an extra page at the end with the header on it. Why?

Is there a way to begin printing labels to an Avery sheet without starting at the first label? I may print 2 or 3 file folder labels a session. I currently track projects in FMP and print the file folder label in a MacSoft product, Labels and Cards Mac. It works but it has the feel of an OS 9 program. Would the series of roll style (Brother Turbo) be better for this task? I can't believe after all of these years that this is not a standard printing feature in FMP. A plug-in or something.

Hi All, I want to print a layout which has only one field which extends to about 10 pages. When I print that layout, it prints only some pages from the middle. I checked the printer configuration and it appears to be fine. It shows properly in the Preview mode as well. Please let me know what could be the problem in printing the whole text properly. I have a field that contains the full name of individuals. I would like to separate the full name which is separated by a comma into two fields, one with the first name and one with a last name. I want to print name tags with just the first name. I imported the original data base from Excel and was able to separate the field into 2 columns at a later time, but FileMaker did not recognize the file so I could not import the information. Hi, I used to have a nice filemaker pro 4 file on my mac but the machine died and i bought an ibm with windows xp, where i installed a filemaker pro 5. Now the original layout doesn't fit to the papersize anymore (up to three times the size of the paper to print on). I can't find anything to reduce the whole layout, and I don't want to redraw the whole thng. Any ideas? thanks

Greetings All! I have a database that I use to keep a journal. Some entries (records) can be as little as 100 words, some can be as verbose as 5000. The layout I use to add to the journal has a 'main-body' text-box of about 30 lines, complete with scroll bars. That's fine when I add to the journal, but what about when I want to print? How can I set up a layout so a 100 word entry prints on one page, but a 5000 word entry prints on multiple pages? Thanks, Sydneytim

Hi all. And happy new year. I can't figure out how to properly get a calculated percentage in a subsummary part. Let's say I have records consisting of People, with data consisting of QuantA and QuantB and a QuantTotal for each record. I can run a subsummary showing the assigned subtotals for each record easily by placing a summary field defined to look at each QuantA, QuantB, and QuantTotal. Easy! What I can't do is show in the same subsummary, a proper ratio (expressed as a percentage) of QuantA to QuantB for the records summarized under that Person. I'm an FMP novice, moving up from Appleworks. I like it! I've inherited a database, one of whose layouts has non-field objects in the header part. When I look at the layout in preview mode the objects are invisible. If I create my own layout and put objects in the header, they are always visible in preview no matter how I view the layout. If I copy the objects from the first layout into mine, they disappear in preview. I can't find any explanation of this behaviour anywhere, even in the Filemaker Bible. Hello, I have a layout with four pages which are accessed via "tab" buttons. For some reason, in "Browse" mode the first page jumps out to full screen (horizontally) showing a huge expanse of white space while the other pages remain at their defined horizontal size. Problem: I tab into a pop-up list field. I hit the down arrow until the selection I want is highlighted. I hit tab to go onto the next field. But the value I selected is not saved in the field, unless I hit 'return' instead of 'tab'. Anyone know of a way to force Filemaker to keep the selected pop-up list value when you tab out of the field? I'd like to eliminate the extra 'enter' you have to type. Hi, I have a layout which has a global field, i use this for searching. and it's been decided it should be a button to keep user simply typing something and not pressing the find button - yes an option is to write code to say "You didn't click lookup!! or display the dialog" for now, i'm interested in having the field be a button. I am currently using the one script to go to certain layouts and changing the script parameter of each button to the name of the layout to go to. The script then gets the script parameter to determine which layout to go to. Easy. What if I want to have two script parameters. One holds the layout name to jump to and another determines whether a new window is opened when going to that layout. I've created a report using a few subsummary sorts. It sorts by category then by code. So my lines look like this: Category 7 Records $2100 Code 1 3 records $900 Code 2 4 records $1200 Catgory 2 3 Records Code 1 1 Record Code 2 2 Record I need to find out how I can put a formula into the subsummary without it calculating all records instead of records shown. Question 1: I have a variety of Avery labels (they are at work and I'm not, so I don't have the numbers). None of them appear in the FileMaker label list. Most of them are not on 8.5 X 11 sheets but are on smaller sheets (like 4X6 or so). Is there a way to set this custom size? I can put the label size in the custom area but FileMaker will assume that they are on bigger sheets. Question 2: Most of the time I don't need a full (8.5 X 11) sheet of labels printed. In fact, I might only need 5-10 at a time. This seems like a very wasteful way to operate. How do I re-use the sheets and get the labels to print where there are still labels left on the sheet? Hi, I was wondering what the SOP on disabling the layout drop down list on the palette/navigation view of filemaker? I have many layouts right now, which are test layouts that I plan to delete, I really don't want people to go in there. Thre is an option which says "No access" in privledge set, but then they cant even get to the first layout. I have a database with three related tables: assets, troubles, and changes. I would like to create a "summary" layout that will show me the 10 most recent records from each of the three tables so I can see, at a glance, the most recent entries into the database. Hi all, I have what is probably a common question, but my searches in the forums yielded no results. I'm using FMP 7 (mac), and I have a pretty simple invoices table in my database. I also have several other tables in the same database, including labor line items ("li_labor"), taxable item line items ("li_item_tax"), and non-taxable line items ("li_item_no_tax"). Hi, I hope this is the right place to post, i didn't see a 'reports' forum. I'm wanting to have a reports_main layout, which displays a portral or list of script names in a table. I want to display a nice description of the report, then allow my user to click on the row. Once they click it i want to run a script, something like Launch_Report() and do a performScript on the field name in that row - and the contents of that field contain the script name which is in the current file. doesn't look like I can set PerformScript's parameter on the fly.... is this possible? Ok, this just might be a total noob question. What I'm trying to do is print the Layout view and showing all the fields and their labels. I'm used to FileMaker 3 on a Mac and now I'm using 7 on Windows. I seem to remember doing it, but just can't find the right buttons to press and online Help just didn't. I can print the layout with blank boxes or with underlines, but not with field labels.

Hi, I'm having a problem getting text in some of my fields to properly center. for example, the text "My Enormously Big House" is displaying like this in my field: My Enormously Big House If I insert a line break between "Enormously" and "Big" it corrects itself, My Enormously Big House But I shouldn't have to do that, right? I've just installed 7.0v3, and discovered that if you expand a part (header, body, footer, etc.) temporarily to work with something in the part, then try to reduce the part back to its original size, it makes the part one pixel larger than it originally was. The great majority of my layouts have objects that appear to continue across multiple parts. This new system creates a one-pixel-wide horizontal white line between parts, which obviously is a huge problem. Does anyone know if there is an easy way to get FM to act like it used to? If not, what other methods are there to solve the problem without going through a ton of laborious single-pixel moving of object…

Hi; Here is my problem: I have a text type field (It is used for description of a product and has a vertical scroll bar checked) that i would like my DB users to be able to read not edit. So i populated the field and selected vertical scroll bar (no entry allowed) and set the field borders. It looks great but the Vertical Scroll bar will not scroll. The only way I have been able to get the Vertical Scroll bar associated with this field to scroll is when i allow entry into this field (which i donot want to do for db users). I have created several fields in my layout which basically looks like two colums. When I use the TAB key I'd first like the curser jump all the fields down in the left column (lets call it column A) and then all fields in the right column (let's call it :. Hello, I created a form to print labels but in order for it to print, when the Print Dialog appears I have to select "Filemaker Pro" from the pulldown that displays "Standards & Copies" and then I have to select "Records being browsed". A similar layout in Filemaker 5 prints just by clicking the Print icon or selecting Print from the File menu. Does anyone have any idea as to why these labels won't just print? Thanks, rlbryant

Hi, Gang! I'm working on an address book layout that begins with an imported tab delimited file and creates a phone directory-type layout. I'm using the label feature and I'm hung up on two problems: -when the name is too long, I want the phone number (the phone number resides to the right of the name on the first line of the label) to become the second line of the label and not line break in mid phone number. It seems that if I can define a non-breaking hyphen (similar to a non-breaking space) and use that in the phone number, that would work. I am using a PC, Windows 2003, Filemaker 7. I have a report with two sub-summary parts , one for clients and another one for jobs. There is a body part that lists all the people that worked on that job. In the body part I have the persons name, how many hours that person worked , how many dolars the person gets per hour and the total that person should receive, that is multiplying the hours worked and the dolars per hour for each person. I have a layout which really looks and works best in Table View, but it requires a Trailing Grand Summary Part with summary fields. I can only get it to print in the Footer which makes it appear on the first page, too. Is there some way to get the summary on the last page only? In the database ive created i set each button to change the mouse pointer to a finger when the user hovers over it, this is especially useful when i use fields to perform a script because it is not so obvious that they are buttons. Problem being that when i use developer to convert the database into a runtime solution this doesnt happen anymore, everything else seems to work ok, and its no big deal, but it would be nice if it still worked. What is the correct placement of fields in portal lines to make embossed fields all appear next to eachother in browse mode? I have portals with multiple rows. My portal is without lines or color and not engraved or embossed but set to have scrol bar at right. The fields are placed one per portal row and are embossed. The problem is that I can't get the top and bottom field edges to line up against eachother. I've tried making each row 1,2, 3, 4 pixels lager then the field, and either the space between the fields is overlapping, too wide or there is a patter of good placement once every 3-4 rows . i was wondering if anyone knew how to make the layout part label (where it says 'header' or 'body' etc) to be vertical? the templates in fm7 have them going vertically, but when i create a new layout, they're horizontal and i can't seem to figure out how to change it. any help would be appreciated.

Hi All I have three layouts containing a Contract. First layout contains pages 1-6, second layout contains pages 7-11 and third layout contains page 12 Question: Can I create a field that will display page numbers between the three layouts. I have an interview which a research nurse completes straight into the computer which is made up of 621 fields. I wanted to be able to pull certain fields from the interviews into another layout for the analyst to view this would be two tables of roughly 300 fields each...I seem to be running into a size problem that I can only display so many fields horizontally in my table then it puts in a carriage return and enters the next set of fields so I end up with my data for each interview being split across 4 lines rather than being on one line. I am attempting to create a report where records are summarized by month, ie, all records created in January 2004 are grouped together followed by a summary beneath the grouped records. In order to do this, I created a calc field that parses the creation date(auto-enter field) using this formula which returns the value as text... Year ( date_Created ) & " " & Month ( date_Created ) When I insert the sub-summary part into my layout, I specify to sort based on the calc field discussed above. I want to have a layout which will be viewed as a list, but with sub-summary part on the layout. I'm currently using FM 5.5 and it doesn't show the sub-summary part. The sub-summary part is only shown in Form view, or in Preview mode. The problem with these are that in Form view, I can only see 1 record at a time (and not the list I want) and in Preview mode I can't get buttons to work (which means no navigation possibilities). The only way I can think of now is to have button (with script) on my normal form to go to Preview mode, show the status area on the right, pause (a continue/cancel buttons now appears on the status area), and have it go back to my normal form o…

I have a project to combine several different FMP 6 databases together. They're all basically name & address lists, but of course using wildly different formats. There are tons of duplicates, but of course not exact duplicates. So I have a lot of hand-work to do to dedupe the combined list. I'd like to make a layout that would allow me to show two records on the screen together, side-by-side, so I could compare them both and decide which fields to use, and then delete one of the two records. Can anyone point me towards a technique for a form (not a list) to display two records from a single database at the same time? -Steve

Hi, I'm newbie . I made a database with only pull down lists, but now I' ve a problem: when I change the selection of one pull down list in automatic the cursor goes on next pull down list and so on. So every time I want to change only one pull down list in a record I'm constrained to change all the following pull down list. This is very boring. Someone has an idea to fix this problem ? Thanks

The date fields in my database are requiring me to input dates in the interational format. When I enter a date like 12/23/2004 FMP says the date is not in the right format and should look like 23/12/2004. My operating system is set to use the U.S. format for dates and my date fields are formatted to display dates in the U.S. format. Is there another preference that I'm missing for date input?

Maybe this question has been asked before but the Google search only gives me 4 results searching on 'theme'. Here's the question, how do you make themes in fmp6? In fmp 5 there was the themes folder with the .fth files but how does it work in fmp6. Where are the theme files and where do I find information about making my own theme. I have a strange situation ... I have a Main Menu which is based upon my Preferences table. It contains only one record. The Main Menu display has NO FIELDS - but only buttons. If the User accidently clicks directly onto the layout (form) where there aren't any buttons, the system goes into 'hour glass' searching!!?? And it searches for a long time!!! Displaying the Status area, it is in Browse mode and unsorted and only one record. It drives me totally nuts. I made sure the layout is based upon Preferences base table. Preferences has many relationships but why does it search if no fields are on the layout? Ideas appreciated ...

Hi everybody I am new to this forum, so here goes. I am a keen to change the colour of fields on a screen on condition of its contents. For example there is a "Copy Date" field that I would like to be black but then red if the system date is the same as the copy date. I would also like objects to be visable or not visable on condition. For example only "Manager" accounts can create new publications. I would like the "New Publication" button to only appear if the account = "Manager". I would really appreciate any help here as I am just at the planning stages of a project and the above two issues could make an enormous difference to the design. …

Can't understand why this works in Safari, but not in IE6 (WinXP) over Instant Web Publishing: I have a portal. Over a row, I've laid a transparent button so users can click on the portal row and it executes a script that takes them somewhere else. Works fine when I'm in Safari, but IE6 doesn't "see" the button (no "finger" appears). I do have Javascript enabled in both browsers. This is driving me NUTS. Any ideas? TIA, cooldaze (I'm starting to hate windows again.)

I just opened one of the pre-existing DB's that comes with filemaker pro "purchase order". there 8 layouts and I noticed that when I ever I do changes to layout 1 will not show up when I try to access the DB on the web browser until I do the change in layout 8 with is the web browser layout. My question is why have so may layouts ? do I need to change both layouts ? or do I only change layout 8 which is the web browser layout ? if so, then why have the extra layout ?. thans in advance for your help.

I have a data base of members names, addreses, etc, and wish to publish a directory in a half page format in booklet form (8 1/2 by 11 folded and stapled in half). I can set up the layout to print in half page columns but can't get it to sort so that when stapled together the data remains alphabetical. In other words, the data needs to move to the correct half page on the basis of the size of the data base and pages required. I hope I have described this correctly so you can give me some help. Maybe FMP can't do this but I know their are word processing programs that are able to do this for newsletters.

Hello, I'd like to know if it's possible via intranet (a web browser, ie or firefox), to access preview mode.I want to sort and make sub totals, then print. Finding FM's Custom Dialog somewhat, ahh, limiting, here's a way around it: Duplicate your layout - then change all buttons to Do Nothing and kill value lists - make fields not editable. Group All and lock it. Draw your dialog box on top of it. You have full drawing tools and all fields and effects. With some effort you can make it look just like a real dialog box (see attached screenshot), but it is not moveable. Use a Done or OK button to go to your orginal layout. I am a teacher developing a database for staff use at the school I teach at (Sydney, Australia). Given that sensitive info about students may be stored, I want to limit access to certain layouts. When a teacher clicks a button that would normally take him to another layout but is denied access (via Accounts & Privileges), I would like a dialog box to pop up and say "Access to XXX denied" and to stay on the current layout (and not to a greyed-out screen which shows No Access and leaves techno-shy teachers wondering what to do next). Gang- I'm attempting to create a phone directory from an imported tab-delimined file. The format is as shown in the attached jpeg. (I've blurred the non-fictional entires to respect the privacy of the members.) I have two issues with this. Hello all, I am not new to FM, but there is one thing I could never figure out: How do I create partly transparent graphics for my Layouts? On the Mac, making one colour transparent (in GraphicsConverter) and then pasting the image to the layout seems to work, but when viewed on a Win PC the transparency is gone. However, there are sample databases (from the ISO CD, for example) that contain lots of partly-transparent graphics? Have all these been created using the "native" FM layout tools? Surely not. We have a contacts database of company employees that we print in a layout using sub summaries for each department. Is there a way to make the 'alternative background fill' work in form mode (which we print from)? I can verify the alternative background fill feature works fine if the layout is viewed in Table or List modes, but not in Form mode. This seems rather strange! Why would this feature not carry through to the one mode that surely most use is made of by the people viewing and printing the database? Is this a bug?

I am developing a solution for estimating jobs and I was asked if I could make a layout appear like a spread sheet and keep it interactive like an excel document. I was going to create four tables, one for job info, one for materials, one for trade services, and one for labour costs. There are going to be a max of 10 items per estimate and each item can use any combination of labour, materials, or trade services. I was thinking of doing this with portals, but cannot figure out if it is possible. I will attach a file displaying the type of view they would like. Wondering if anyone knew if there was a way to specify a specific row and column for printing a label instead of creating a whole sheet of the same label. For example If I wanted to create return address labels, but instead of printing a whole page of labels, I just want to print on the label located in col 2, row 3. Any thoughts??
