Installed OS 10.1.2 and when I launched the OS 9 native version of FMPro v5.5 instead of it opening it classic, it just crashes. I then installed the OS X native version and all was fine. However, like most intelligent sys admins, after I experimented for exposure, I went back to OS 9. Now when I double-click a FMPro db on my desktop, it produces a bogus error about incorrect installation, missing system components and insufficient memory. If I launch FMPro and do a File:Open, no problems. Obviously the OS X version is causing the OS 9 version to misbehave. Anyone know if this is a known issue or am I special and will have to deal with it accordingly?

I am using a FM5 solution for document management by importing a referrence for scanned documents into a containor field. These cannot be used for "find" so the identifying data (used to find the document) needs to be entered manually. Can OCR'd scanned documents be entered into a text field that can then be indexed for "find"? If so, any suggestions on such a good scanner and OCR application. My Umax Astra MX3 is rather slow with 20 sec per scan and the OCR is useless.

Good Morning We have just installed FM Server and when accessing our database within our Firewall it's a very fine thing!!! However we want remote access for our teachers from home and FM tells me I need to do something to Port 5003... manuualy unblock it or some such thing... essentially at the moment when online at home through remote access, FM can't find the host file when you click on "Locate Specific host" and input the IP address Thanks... We have been using FM Pro on our Macs for many years now. We have about 10 computers networked (ethernet), running FM Pro 3.0v5. Recently, we've been having problems while clicking a "print" button to print an invoice. The button is a simple "change layout and print script." One computer in particular will crash when that button is clicked. We just got a new iMac to replace the one that was crashing, and it also crashes. It is an intermittent problem and the computer is fine otherwise. There is no other software running on this new computer (ie other extensions, etc that might interfere). Any ideas?: Mike

In MacOS it seems that you cannot get the value list that is attached to a field formatted as "menu" to display, unless you explicitly click into the field. In does not display if you tab into it, and into doesn't display if you go to the field through a Set Field script step. If you format the field as a list, however, it displays the attached value list. But, in Windows, a field formatted as a menu, shows its value list if you either tab to it, or use the Set Field script step to go to it. Is there anyone who knows why this is so? And could you make the menu value list display perhaps through the use of AppleScript? Thanks for any help, Daniel

in 5.0v1 is it common for files to get corrupted? I have had this a couple of times. The Recover ... function says its worked but as soon as the file is opened FM quits and needs a restart as it claims I still have a copy running after it's quit! ps. I hope this is an appropriate place for this message - I couldn't see a better one.

Everyone: I'm looking for some advice. My small office had (until recently) two separate networks: 1) a 35 user network running FileMaker Server 3.0 and macs and a few pcs on FileMaker Pro 3.0 2) a small 5- mac network running FileMaker Pro 3.0 with a host machine running "Multi-user" files from its own version of FileMaker Pro 3.0. We recently combined both networks to share a high-speed internet connection (we had two different isps previously). After the conversion, the smaller network users could only access files that were opened through the FileMaker Server software on the large network server machine. We have, at this point, put all of our files on the same …

I am new to networking so please help. I want to set up a LAN using our school districts WAN. I have developed a database for our school. It will serve about 40 clients. This week I will order the server and software. The clients will be both Win and Mac. Will a Mac server work, or will I need software for the Win boxes to see the Mac server?

I just completed a back-up of my hard drive (on on Macintosh 8.6, using FileMaker 4.0). Then when I tried to open my database, up popped a dialog box: "The access privileges in this file have b een damaged or possibly tampered with." Huh? I"ve never set any access privilege, never set a password. I've tried running DiskWarrior and Norton. I've tried replacing the file with the one from the backup. I've tried trashing my Filemaker preferences. But I can't access my database...and without that, I'm out of business! Can anyone help? Thanks, Dan O'Day [email protected]

I have a problem that is driving me crazy. I have one dedicated server that runs FM server 5.0. Through a hub 3 Imacs and a PC are connected on this server. Two Imacs and the PC work well. One Imac is terribly slow... I tried everything. - Checked the ethernet connection of the Imac but speed is good with other tasks (internet, copying files from other computers etc.) - Checked filemakers settings and used the same as the other Imacs. - Reinstalled everything from scratch (including a new installation of Os9) - Assigned more Ram to filemaker on the problem mac - Settings are TCP/IP on the problem mac It really looks like there is a local problem with this one I…

My client is currently running FMP Server 5.5 on a G4 with OS 9.1. FileMaker recommends OS X as the operating system of choice because of its advanced networking and file handling features. I have been running FileMaker Pro 5.5 on my laptop in OS X 10.1.1 with no problems whatsoever. Nevertheless, before updating the server operating system, I'd like to hear the experiences of anybody who has gone this route. The server will be used virtually exclusively for FM server ( I will leave file sharing turned on, as I keep update software stored there, and occasionally need to access it. However, sharing will not be available to any other user, so I expect any performance hit…

Here's what happened: I was creating Multiple Users accounts on Mac 9 machine, and when I was done, I logged on as one of the users. When I tried to access File Maker Server, I couldn't even see it on the network. I had to mannually create a new file in File Maker, go to preferences and swith the protocol to TCP/IP (Somehow by default it got switched to AppleTalk). Only then did I see the server in Hosts window. Question: Should it matter if my protocol is AppleTalk? I should be able to access the server with either protocol, should I not? Thanks in advance

I am in the process of setting up a in-house / web server for Filemaker 5 and Lasso. I have been using webstar with our current provider but since I am doing it in-house I am looking at what is the best Webstar or Web Objects? Am I better off creating my web server with OS X or 9.2.1? Any feedback would be great.

Similar to a previous forum posting, I have OS 9.2.1 and FM 5.5. The installer works fine but when I attempt to run FM I get either an Apple Type 1 (bus error) or a Type 2 (address error) after the splash screen is displayed and the fonts preferneces built and apple talk connected etc. I have tried removing all refernces to FM including the FM Pro Fonts file and re-installing but get the sam eerror. In desperation, I re-installed our earlier version of FM 3.0 but this gave the sam error. I have tried booting the system with all extensions off etc but still no joy. It has been suggested that these errors may be caused by fonts....anyone have any good ideas what to look f…

Hi guys/gals, Is there a way to minimise the amount of information streamed from the server by, when logging on to a client machine, copying the latest prices of stock, client details (each in their own respective databases)onto your local computer, then only go to the server for 'live' info on stock availabilty? I hope that sentance explains my question, but, here's some more info if your confused! At the moment I have a 'Point of Sale' database which pulls info of clients and stock from two other databases. There will be 30 computers (iMacs) running from a server and I want to minimise the amount of work the server does because of getting requests from all the compu…

Can anyone help!!! I have a small Mac network running on Appletalk/Ethernet. I wish to share a Filemaker database which is on a PC in the office, with all the Macs as well. I have put PC Maclan on the PC and I can see it on the Appletalk network. However the Filemaker on the PC won't let me share the database over an Appletalk network. Does anyone have a protocol for this or know how I can get round it? For Your Info: I am using Windows 98 on the PC and OS 9.1 on the Macs. I can't run the Macs on a TCP/IP network as they all have a seperate internet connection (e.g. ADSL, ISDN etc.)

I have installed OS X 10.1 and have found that some of the layouts in my FM Pro 5.5 database are not displaying. Screen comes up blank, but if you click in various areas, the fields in those areas will appear. This is a simple, basic layout never had any problems in Mac OS versions all the way up through OSX 10.0.4 Anyone else seeing a similar problem with 10.1? Bruce

Well, I'm still having problems with this server. I set up FM Server on a second machine and Unlimited on this machine. Unlimited machine opens eight databases as guest with Websharing enabled and serves them for the web. FileMaker goes down three or four times a day. I've got 60mb memory allocated to it. I understand that FM cannot handle multiple requests when the results page (i.e html page post the query) exceeds 40KB (more than 15 results). I have a couple databases where this could happen regularly. Could this bring down the whole app? Would it make a difference if I reduced the number of possible results per page?

Hello, This is really a Unix question, since I'm working in the terminal window of Mac OS X. I am running a web-accessible FileMaker database and have just moved it to OS X. So far the transfer has worked. But, I want to run FileMaker as a background process so that (i) a user doesn't have to be logged in for it to be running (i.e. security), and (ii) other people can log in while it's running. I know this is possible in Unix (the apache web server runs in the background). So far I have tried (from the terminal window): I. open -a "FileMaker Pro.app" "Database Name" & I get something like: [2] 795 Then I try to put job 2 into the background with: …

G4 / 400Mhz / 192mb. We have a database of over 300,000 customers. When we need to update/search/index etc. large amounts of this database it seems to take forever. We had an independent person set up our new invoicing / database system. He worked only w/ the PC version in the past. He seems to think that similar functions and sized databases on the PC run MUCH faster than our Mac set-up. We are running a 1000/T ethernet so our network hums. Why would we experience such perfoemance slowdown? Filemaker tech support said to allocate 45 mb of ram...any more would be negligable in perfomance benefit. Virtual memory is off (We have 192 mb of ram so no need for VM correct…

I've been a Mac person for many years, however only as an end user. Well I have a chance to make the jump, and while it's still early in the game, I want to start learning the basics of running a server. My customer is 100% Windows, I'm 99.9% Mac so I picked FM to handle the data base. I know that I can use a Mac server to drive this project, however need to learn the "ins and outs". Would love some suggestions to good books and or websites. Thanks!

When I try to open a FM file by doubleclicking on the icon,my mac tlls me that "the application that was used to create this file could not be found". I have to run FM first to open the file. Is there something that I could do about this (I really hope so, because I would like my computer to open the file automatically when the computer is started). I must say that the first version of the file was made on a PC running windows 98. Thanks for your help, onno

Dear Members When printing reports from FMP3 and FMP5, both on iMacs running OS9, I have problems with random text characters disappearing at the ends of words. I have checked that the field boxes are long enough - some really long names appear OK, yet other 4 letter names have characters at the end missing. I have installed the latest printer drivers (Epson Laser L5700) and Epson inkjet printer on both computers. I have tried recreating the layouts from scratch and I have also tried the FMP3 database on FMP5 with the same problem. Can anyone offer some suggestions? Many thanks Ollyjo

Topic: Disconnecting client machine Ornis Junior Member Member # 4572 Rate Member posted August 09, 2001 12:00 PM I have FMPro 4 running on three machines: one host machine (database set to multiuser, appleshare inactive, no other applications running) and two clients. When both clients work on the same database opened on the host, the host repeatedly brings the message (translated from German Version) : "Waiting for client xy to respond... I can only click "Disconnect". So one client is disconnected. How can I avoid …
