JavaScript Functions for Speed and Profit The movie below is from one of our most popular demos from “Year in Review” at DevCon 2014. I was talking about what a breakthrough custom functions were back in 2004 and how they unlocked a whole new kind of code-sharing among FileMaker developers. JavaScript functions in FileMaker may unlock even more potential. Jason Young introduced the idea of using JavaScript as a calculator–as a library of functions–instead of using it for perhaps the more obvio

With so much going on at DevCon–and so many friends to catch up with–it can be tempting to put yourself on auto-pilot for the whole conference, just reacting to what’s around you. You can feel a little aimless that way. And you can miss things. You’ve sacrificed a lot to be here so double-down on that commitment: join the DevCon Meditation Challenge and see what it does for you. This even works if you’re not at DevCon =)Folks who take up the challenge will take time to meditate on their own, f

If you haven’t played with flights on Virgin America’s new site you should definitely check it out. A great rethink of the flight booking workflow, it’s also a nice argument for the long-scrolling site. Big, sexy date pickers are dear to my heart. Book a flight. Details on the redesign, Work & CO, and their use of AngularJS here. The post Virgin Date Pickers appeared first on SeedCode. Source
When it comes to creating child records records in FileMaker we have a couple of different options available. The first is to enable “Allow creation of records via this relationship” on the relationship graph. This displays an empty set of fields in the last portal row so that the user can enter data and create a record. The second method is to create a button located outside the portal that creates a new record ready for the user to enter their data. A new feature that we have been using exte

by   FileMaker DevCon 2014 is just around the corner and I’m busy planning my schedule and getting ready for my presentation. I look forward to attending DevCon each year and I’m always glad to connect in person with friends and colleagues from all over the world. I’m also excited about exploring San Antonio – I’ve heard it’s a fun town and the River Walk  is something everyone should make time for. I thought I’d share my schedule and I hope you’ll join us at one of these events: Tuesd
This video and example file demonstrates how to sync just the records relevant to your current location. This is a very common workflow in offline solutions and it helps keep the found set on your mobile device nice and small: meaning faster syncs and a better experience for folks in the field who don’t have to page through a bunch of irrelevant records. Filtering using Find Requests Todd Geist put together this sweet example file and video to show off the filtering in GoZync 5. “Filtering” le
Over the past dozen years, I have discussed in a number of venues the necessity for robust security practices and the techniques needed to implement them on the FileMaker Platform. Such discussions have as their underlying framework a fairly traditional Information Security paradigm. There are Threat Agents who seek to initiate Exploits or Threats that negatively Impact the Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability of FileMaker Platform systems or other Digital Assets. These attacks also
If you’re working in an office with Active Directory and you have more than a couple of computers to install FileMaker Pro on it can be very convenient to use a Group Policy Object to deploy FileMaker to different computers on your domain. This prevents you from having to go to each machine and run the setup program. A GPO can also be used to install updates or uninstall FileMake Pro to different machines on your network. This guide will show you how to set up a GPO to deploy FileMaker Pro to

Pleasantly surprised at how some of the native behaviors we thought we’d have to script for WebDirect are working really well. The phrase game changer is one of those phrases that can potentially be good or bad depending on the connotation given to it. To this effect I want to talk about both.
