Hi, can anyone tell me why FM Pro takes such a long time to boot up? I checked out the performance monitor: after FM has taken some processor cycles nothing happens for about 10 to 15 seconds. It seems that FM is scanning the network for any other running instances. Is that right? Has anyone encoutered a similar problem? Does anyone have any solutions? Thanks, JohanneS

I've been looking over Scriptology on their web sight and would like to hear from anyone using it. At $399.00 I would like a litte feedback before making a purchase. I'm no expert by any means, but I've been around FileMaker long enough to get around. I want something to get me to the next level that is done in simple, easy to understand language. I've been using Filemaker for 15 years and currently have 5.0 Windows version. I use a Dell PC with a Pentium III processor and 256MB of RAM. I daily use about 10 different relational databases and one is 100MB in size. I continuously use my Filemaker databases for 8 to 10 hours every day. Recently, especially in the 100MB database, but also in a couple of my smaller databases, I have had to Recover them (3 times in the last 2 weeks for the 100MB database, and once each for 3 of my smaller ones). This had almost never happened in the past (except maybe 2 or 3 times in the last 10 years). Just prior to having to Recover them (and it always shows no records or data s…

http://www.fmforums.com/ubb/images/icons/crazy.gif I just upgraded to FM 5.5 and I can't get it to run. It starts to load, then when it gets to the "Apple Talk loaded successfully" and it locks up. I am running it on a G4 with OS 9. Our PCs seem just fine with the new version. Has anyone run into this?

I have updated filemaker pro 3.0 to v6 on a few machines and I notice that now sometimes they double click on the icon and the splash screen for filemaker flashes on then off, but filemaker never loads. I either have to wait a while or reboot the machine to try to get it to work. I have seen this once on a machine with v3 installed now. Any ideas?

I am a user of FM Pro 5.0v3 at debutant/intermediate level. I am a PC User but have been a Mac user too. (I went to PC platform not by choice but obligation; I am still a Mac lover in my heart!!!) Thank to Filemaker, FM Pro is cross Platform... Howdy - I have a database of donors and donations to a foundation with various associated related files (programs, campaigns, correspondence, etc.). One of the files (Gifts, the one that keeps track of the donations) is really huge (250+ megs), and I wonder if I've done something stupid to make it so big. We're also finding network access of the database to be very slow, and we need to have several people answering the phone and entering donations staring next week. I'm not sure what you mean by "test portal". FM 5.5 comes in several versions. For serving more than a few client machines, use FileMaker Server 5.5. FileMaker Server 5.5 will host 125 files and 250 users. For a initial capability serving under 10 users you can use a standard copy of FileMaker 5.5. Exact performance or suitability is a little hard to determine with no description of what you are trying to do. -bd

I have recently purchased Developer 5.5 All our users are using 5.0 (and I did develop the whole application with 5.0) I just discovered a simple problem that only happens in 5.5. The code was written with 5.0 and is still working if I use 5.0 (the problem is in a simple if-condition statement) Was I just lucky all this time or are there know differences in 5.5 that are not downward compatible? Hello People, I did a database for a company for them to record transactions and track marketing data. The transactions database has a couple hundred thousand records. I did a number of reports for them and these work fine. The database was also functioning properly. It is running on Filemaker Pro 4.0 v3 on a Dell PowerEdge Server. The server had a Pentium III 450 Mhz processor, with 128 Mb of RAM (Windows NT 4.0). They also use the server as a general File/Printer Server and the Peachtree Accounting is hosted on it. i have an issue where a client is saying their program occasionally has an error "filemaker is unable to read the disk the file is on" "click continue to try again or click quit and copy this file to another disk." not sure where to even begin on this one... they're running macs... he ran norton to check the disks... anyone have any experience with this error... and does this problem originate from a filemaker problem, physical network (wiring?) problem, OS problems, etc?? ideas appreciated!

Hi I am making a db about vehicles. Now i would like to have a page where i can sort every vehicles owner with the first letter "a". I would like to change this value, and sort the owners city with just a klick on a button. I would like to have predefined sorting rules on specific fields (eg "owners city"), and this sorting rules will run when i klick a button. Pretty much, you have to upgrade to get it to work. I ran into the same problem with 5.0 to 4.1 when I changed jobs, I tried exporting to tab-delimited text, but then the whole functionality went out the window. If it is a complicated database, then upgrading is your only option to be able to use it without having to re-create everything. At least that is what customer support told me when I called two months ago.

i have been using filemaker for just over a year now and am wondering why they dont have any of the below features, as i feel the inclusion of these would really improve it triggers - on delete on create on update, that sort of thing more behaviours on the layouts to run scripts not just on click button it would really make presentation a lot better if they had rollovers or the mouse over behaviour lastly is there any way to get alternating row colours in list mode any thoughts... We use Filemaker Server 3.0 running on NT Server 4.0 SP5. Our existing Filemaker administrator is resigning and we are trying to reassign her privaledges to another admin. Our problem is no matter what we do only the original account has rights to all the Filemaker databases. We assigned NT administrator rights and complete file and share access to another account, yet when he opens Filemaker Pro he cannot set the database to single mode, perform backps, etc and it only works when logged in using the old admin's NT account. Our last resort is to simply rename and reassign the old account but that doesn't get to the root of the issue. I suspect we need to change a set…

Hi, I have a client who is still using an SE 30 and Filemaker II to manage his small business ( unbelieveable! but true! ) He is thinking about moving up to a couple new Macs and updating FM II to FMP 5.5. I tried to convert one of his files using 5.0 but to no avail. I suppose I could export all his data as tab delimited text then import that into fmp5 but I would still have to rewrite all the scripts and that would be time consumming. Using FM Pro 5 v3 on a Mac. Added pictures to database which I later removed. Now every time I quit my database FM goes into a "scanning for unused blocks" then "removing unused blocks" modes that seem to take forever. I've seen these messages before but they took only seconds. Not it's more like minutes. What's happening and how can I stop it? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I'm running FMPro Server 5, with clients running MacOS version 5.5. TCP/IP is the default protocol. To make it easy for users to connect to databases on the server, I have small databases they keep on their computers, with buttons activating scripts that open the served database for them - saves them navigating their way through open dialogue boxes. But for some users, the first time they try to open one of these databases, FMPro tells them it can't find the database. They cancel their way out of the script, and then try again, and there it is. This can get pretty annoying - has anyone else seen this? Any hope of a solution?

Most the users are using Windows 98, 95 and MAC, we DON’T have any problem when there are so many user log in the system at the same time as long as it’s not exceed 250 users. Hello, I am want to create a personalized web page for FM 5.5. I have read enough info to know that I need to use XML- with xsl and I think FMPXMLRESULT. But, now I am just not sure how it should actually be formatted. I don't want anything in-depth, just a page with our name and info, then links to the databases I have created. Hi, I have a runtime program in Kiosk mode. A Setup was created using Setup Factory which (according to Indigo Rose) is compatible with the XP System. Problem - program will not start after it has been installed. It works fine on Win95 thru ME. Question - is this a FMP5 compatibility problem? It seems that printing scripts (with the page setup restore function) from 5 does not transfer well into 5.5. All my layouts that were automatically printing are now printing in the portrait orientation rather than what I had specified earlier. Has anyone run into this? This is going to be a pain for me if there is no resolution - I have programmed many many forms in this dbase and will have to reset these settings again script by script. Any suggestions? Thanks

I was working on the "Collections" template...modifying it and such...and when I got it to how I wanted it, I decided to change the name of the DB from "Collections" to "photocatalog". When I tried to open it afterwards, it said the database was corrupted and to do a recover. I did that and it's fine now....but now I have photocatalog_recovered. I want to change it to just photocatalog.....but does renaming a database CAUSE corruption??? Should I start all over again from scratch? I don't want this slight corruption to haunt me down the road seeing as how I just started.

welp....I'm at wits end...I have installed FM Pro on my mac...set up the web companion, setup sharing, etc etc.....but it just returns a "server error" when I try to load the webpage from a PC. I have a windows version of FM Pro 5.0 here at work and set it up, and it worked fine viewing the web page from my Mac. I did everything exactly the same. I am behind a firewall at both places, but I put the Mac on DMZ to allow all ports through and that still didn't work. Is there a script or calculation that sends an alert to a data-entry person who forgets to enter information in certain fields? What I have in mind: When exiting the record (for any reason), the person leaves the address or zip field(s) blank, I want a beep/message that says "YOU ARE LEAVING THE RECORD WITH INCOMPLETE FIELDS. Config: FileMaker Pro v5.0v3 Windows 2000 SP2 Outlook Express 5.0(also tried 6.0) I'm using A Send Mail script, utilizing the MAPI feature of Outlook Express. OE is set up to use IMAP with the mail server (running Ipswitch IMail). When the script executes, the mail is sent, however, the message is unable to be moved to the Sent Items folder. I dialog box displays on the screen stating that OE is attempting to move the message to the Sent Items folder. Every 1 minute, it asks if you want to wait or stop the process. I'm using FMP 5.0v3 and have 1500 records. All records contain a photograph within a container field, some in tiff and some in jpg format. I upgraded my Mac OS to v9.2.1 and I'm now having problems with FMP crashing when I scroll the records. I'm getting an error code 2. When I restart the program, I get a message about the number of users has been exceeded. I called FMP help desk and they told me this problem is caused by crashing, and to zap the p-ram to fix the problem with the "number of users exceeded" message. I am building a dictionary of a native language using specially designed fonts for the language. To get the correct alphabetization for the native language, I have had to build separate databases for each letter of the native alphabet. Now I want to print the output of each database in sequence, but I cannot figure out how to alter the page number variable so that it does not reset to 1 by default. I upgraded from Filemaker 5.0 Developer to Developer 5.5 and received the new version last week. I thought I'd share with you all what I've found out. My opinions are strictly my own. I have no need for any web-related enhancements, so please keep that in mind. The only user interface improvement that the FM gurus made is changing the mouse pointer to a hand...hardly a significant change. As for what they've given us as developers, it is half baked and rather amaturish. The script debugger does half the job: it displays a line by line execution of each statement. Can one tab vertically from one record to the next in a List Layout without using the mouse? It appears that the user can only tab horizontally (within the same record)in a List layout, and has to use the mouse to move the cursor up/down a record or use a button to trigger a script to move from record to record. It is annoying for user to enter vertical data in a list layout, as I don't think the user can use keyboard to move vertically to enter data. Is that correct?

I managed to take over a client who uses filemaker 3.0v3 I believe. One of their guest machines locked up and they had to shut it down. The host machine still thinks this user is connected to it and will not close any files. I do not want to control+alt+delete it because I don't want to corrupt data. I don't have a fairly recent backup because the backup won't backup open files. Does anyone have any idea what I may be able to do to fix this?

Is it likely that FM will lose a Find Request or unexpectedly use another Find Request in a script? I have had this happen several times. I have about 10 clients using our databases from a server. All of them are read/print-only. We are an arts organization with many donors. I create a script that finds "Best 300," i.e. patrons who have given at least $xx. It finds approximately 300 names -- perfect. A month later I run the script and it's finding 900 names. No, not an increase in donors. It's now Finding with different search criteria. hi, thanks to you good folks and all your help i have a little rdbs going! however, when i sort -in a Table view- by "Username", in this case, i get about half or so of my records sorted, then there is the rest of the records sorted, by Username, again. this seems to be because those Usernames that are appearing in the "latter sorted section" are also Users who listed in the first, i.e., i have Usernames appearing multiple times -which is fine, BUT in a sort by Username is seems that it does each name once then the multiples appear (sorted) -even if there are 2 more occurances of the same Username they WILL then be "together". how can i get them ALL together? i can…

I use filemaker pro 5 for my purchase orders system. I downloaded and reviewed all the filemaker business accounting templates at filemakerworld.com and none of them were right for me. Any better ones out there? I want to link my current filemaker PO system to an accounting solution. Some of them had too many features and some didn't have enough. I want one that does not lock me out of the layout mode. I liked the one called "FAIM" the best, but I still think that I could find better. Any suggestions?

Has anyone tried running a "-script" tag on a FMP RAIC server system that has multipe machines serving the DB that the script is from. If a set of DB's is hosted on a machine running FMP Server, and 5 other machines are clients to that server, which are then "sharing" those same DBs with an Apache server running WSC does the actual "running" of the script take place on the 5 'client' machines or on the Server? Or Both? The big question is would it be possible to access _other_ data (not another script) in the same DB that a script was being run from IF it were on a different one of these clients? -Arin

Can anyone please help. I am creating a client database and have created three files 1)organisation - hold company info including Address etc. 2)contacts - holds specific peoples contacts with organisations requiring many to one relationship 3)Main - where I am trying to put all my layouts. My problem is that i want to put a layout for creating a new contact in the main file but it is creating a new record in organisation as well. How can I get around this.

I am currently running two main servers, Novell Client 32 & Windows NT. FM Server is being run on NT and Paradox made databases on Client 32. Users need to log onto both servers to use FM databases & Paradox databases and need to open them both on their PC's. The problem is that I am getting calls from users stating that the Paradox system keeps locking up and causing FM to crash plus the PC. I have checked the specs of the machines, seems in order and made sure that they are running on 100mpb & TCP/IP. But I cannot find out what the problem is. I need to be able to type the first few letters and have the value list scroll letter by letter. For example, I have many universities in my customer database and need to locate one near the bottom of the list. I am currently using Lotus Approach, which allows the list to scroll alphabetically as the letters are typed. When I attempt this with FM 5.5, the list keeps jumping to whatever letter is pressed next. When I press "U" the list goes to the first "U". When I press "N" the lest jumps to the first "N".

What am I doing wrong? I select save-as from fm5.5 and even though the dropdown box claims that I can save-as a *.fm5, *.fm3 or *.fm I try the latter two and I when I try to open it from a filemaker 4.1 program I get an error stating that it was created with 5.0 and I can't continue. I also try the export feature which doesnt' work for me either. Can you help? Evan P.

FM Forums have previously helped me with picture problems (Vaughn and others - thanks) I have been imbedding photos in our FM4 DB of properties for sale. the file had increased to the magic 2gb and would take no more. I then spent some time and finally found out how to hold only references to the pictures rather than the imbedded photo (Yes I know i am a slow learner!) So now the file has dropped from 2 gb to 30mb - Great. However in the process of putting the photos in (Fileimport export import picturestore only reference to the file) I have stuffed up some where as instead of the db increasing only a few k for every 20 - 30 pictures it suddenly jumped from 30 mb …

I have fmserver 3 and 5 on the same network. they are serving approx. 50 files on each. the files on both servers have the same names and i want to convert the server 3 files to version 5 and have them all live in fm5 land. Problem is, when i convert the files and rename them, i have to change all the relationships and any reference to a file in all the scripts...... This would take several days.... is there another way to do this???

You'll have to excuse of ignorance in FileMaker Pro. I have a Filemaker 5 DB with over 2,000 records running on MAC OS 9.1. Each record has fields that detail company information, name, address, etc. I need to export these records into a Word or Excel File so that they come out like the following example... Acme Lawn Mowers 222 James Street Anytown, NJ 90210 When I export the records (doesn't matter what type I choose) I select the particular fields that I want to export and then click the export button. Hi, When typing in Filemaker Pro 5, the cursor sometimes lags behind the keyboard strokes. Also, sometimes when clicking on a field, the pop-up list takes a while to appear. It seems FMP5 is always a few steps behind. There are currently only two people using this database file, myself and one other. It happens when I am the only one using this file, too. Hello good people! I work for a company that has a need for an adaptive database that can integrate all of our functions of business, and I'm trying to decide if FileMaker Pro is the right product for us. We are a computer manufacturing company that builds and installs networks for dental offices. We have to have a very flexible inventory, and scheduling will be pretty intensive as well. we have been able to recreate a crash on our windows boxes that has me worried. on a date field with no field-level validation, if you enter an invalid date and click revert on the resulting dialog box it crashes and gives you a DLL error. you have to force quit FM. this is only happening on one table, but it seems to be on all the date fields in that table. it also doesn't happen on any of our macs, even the same field. here are our operating specs: --OS's affected: Win98, WinME, Win95; no problems on MacOS 8.5 or 9.x; didn't test Win2k --error: MSVCRT.DLL error --Bound file served through FileMaker Server 5.5, served on Win2k professional. I'm a beginner with FileMaker - coming from an Access background (only intermediate in Access). I'm trying to execute an SQL statement from an external application and am having problems. Specifically, I'm not sure what to reference for the FROM statement. In Access, the FROM would reference the table. Here's my SQL statement for FileMaker: Select Section FROM sesats WHERE Section = '3' Section is the column in the FileMaker database. I have a form with four numeric fields. Based on the user entry I calculate an average on a fifth field. How can I show the final average only when all four fields are filled? I have a setup where I am serving 11 databases using a copy of FP4.0v3 to about eight users. Two issues tend to arise. First, Filemaker will often but up a dialog on the host machine stating something along the lines of the disk containing the database cannot be updated; try moving the database to another disk, and providing the buttons 'quit' and 'continue.' If I click 'continue' everything proceeds as usual. Occasionally, the dialog returns repeatedly, but continued clicking of the 'continue' button solves the problem. Hi All, I have a couple of computers here where I cannot see the databases in the "Hosts" dialog box. I have gone through the technet articles on FileMaker's support page and found an article, "106449" and none of the reasons explained in there refer to me. I have completely unistalled FileMaker 5.5 and removed all registry enteries. I then re-installed FM 5.5, but still I cannot see the databases. I CAN ONLY see the databases, if I "specify host" and put in the server name. Any clues anyone? Thanks

I uploaded a fp5 file from a pc to a mac fp5 server. I tried to do a sort and it gave me an error message. I checked on the sort order and it was not there so I redid the sort order and sorted out the data. I then close the file and open it back up and the sort order is gone again. For some reason the sort order is not saved. All the fields are of type text and all are indexed. I took the file off the server checked the sort order and it was there?? Someone Help PLEASE.. Whenever FMP cashes or is forced to quit the computer needs to be restarted. I'm not sure why but I suspect that the network copy protection scheme is a separate applicatin thread that is independent of the main program. When FMP crashes or is quit the NCP is still running. Regarding the layouts, first check your copy of FMP is patched to the latest level: go to the FileMaker web site and download the free updater. When you've done that make a secure backup of the db before you do anything else, then try the file again. I have FMP server 3.0v4 running on a G4 with OS 9.04. It has been fine for a year and a half, last week it crashed. It restarted fine and everything works except the automatic restart script. It is a 2 line applescript that tells FMP to quit and the finder to restart. If you double click on the script in the finder FMP quits and the machine restarts, but it will not work when called through FMP Schedules, even though it worked fine before the crash. I'm stumped and I need to restart the machine each day for some Today & Current date calculations to work. Anyone have any ideas?

I've tried a total uninstall and resinstall of 4.1v3 on windows 98 and I am always getting: A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C02F277C in VXD NAVAP(02) + 0001982C. The current application will be terminated. I've dealt with filemake many many win95 machiens without serious troubles. But I really need it to work on my win98. Anyone else seen this?

Problem: A user with a PC running WIN 2000, 128MB RAM logs into the network at startup, then launches FM Pro ver 4.1v3. She opens the main database and enters the password, but she then gets a message saying "FileMaker Pro has generated an error message and will shutdown". Here's the curious part: I can log in to the PC network with our administrator password, and FileMaker will run fine! Any thoughts before we either re-install FM, or WIN2k, or both???
