Inconsistent email results

I'm looking for help with a problem getting the -mailTo set of tags to work consistently within a html form. I'm using version 6.04 on a Windows box.

The form in question is intended to allow the user to enter their subject line and message to be broadcast to a list of email addresses that have loaded with the page from a portal in the user's record. When the user submits the form the message body is entered in a global field (using the -edit action tag) which is ultimately contained in the -mailFormat text file. The html seems well formed and works as expected with some records but with others the edit occurs correctly but no email messages are sent. No error's are generated on the page but if the error log file function of the Web Companion is turned on the following error entry occurs:

ERROR 55003 : Received unexpected reply code from email host.

Neither FileMaker tech support nor my smtp provider have a record of that error code nor could I find anything on a search of the smtp RFC sites. The db record in question does have the largest number of addresses in the portal (but still only about a dozen) and Filemaker tech support tells me there is no built in limit to how many -mailTo form elements the Web Companion will process. The email addresses I believe are all correct.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

Maybe the address-list is too big for that SMTP host. I know some limits can be applied to "sendmail" for the number of addresses in a list. How many addresses would there be for an email which has failed?

Some other limitations may apply; e.g. the text string containg the address list may be longer than some limit.

Try a different SMTP host?

Good Luck.

Thanks, you're exactly right. Subsequent to my posting the question I tried to send a message to the same list using a mail client and got errors. My provider then informed me they have a 10 recipient limit as part of their anti-spam procedures.

Question answered, work-around in progress!
