Good courses in filemaker

Can anyone tell me about any in depth courses in Filemaker. I would call myself a basic intermediate user of it but would love to be able to get a better understanding of it. I would be looking for something that would run for a week or so, as I would probably have to travel a long distance to get there. I am based in Ireland. I mainly use windows but am trying to get to grips with my first Mac.

Hey foodsman,

You forgot the best place of shared experience, samples and more....

http://www.fmforums.com

I am to close to 800 posts on this board right now in less than a year of membership !!!!!

Very modestly, I still consider my self a Beginner, but looking back to my first posts, I surely made some improvements. wink.gif

I remember once having been adviced to hire one of you developpers on board. With many respect to your experience and business, I felt like this was MY job and MY database....and my TIME.

As long as you are currently building something with FM, and if you are free to spend some time on board, this Forum will provide very accurate and dead-true answers to all what you need, step by step.

Even those answers from other related threads, even some very bad answers made can give you the Good answers... tongue.gif

I still consider practice better than theory, and with all you fellows here, I found the best working place for FileMaking.

Many thanks to the Administrators and to all members of this board.

Ugo

I was going to suggest that you Reply to this one and break the barrier but, I realized that you probably already had broken it before I got up today anyway.

Congratulation on your milestone and thank you for your help over the year.

Hi Foodsman,

There a lot of people with exceptional FileMaker knowledge and I do not mean to slight a single one of you.

I don't even know what exactly the last part could mean, ("slight" ?), but just to make sure there is no confusion, my "Hey !" was very friendly and I'll also follow Ray or Vaughan or Dj or ....many others here in the plain dark. And I surely consider the links you posted as some "must see"...

I totally agree with the rest of your post, and it was not my intention to say "Get Rid of Developpers".

As you said, I just know the good questions for MY solution and MY business, and I'm trying to find the best answers. I also know how far my learning curve can be, so I'm quite sure I'll insert a post in the Services offered in a few month when it comes to WEB, CDML and other things that came to mind while being on board...but that keep staying very abstract for me right now.

Thanks.

Moving away from this mutual admiration society, I'd like to add that before I even opened this thread I already had the answer -- yup, it's the same thing, the fmforums boards.

With over 1,100 posts, I can safely say that, while I there's a lot about Filemaker I don't know, there's nothing in Filemaker I can't accomplish if it can be done in Filemaker at all -- because these boards are here.

Hi,

mutual admiration society
smile.gif

Dan, I forgot to mention YOU....Please forgive me. And also PUPIWEB, and Andy (where is he BTW ?).

When I cam here, I was impressed and said. How can they do that. When I first saw Anatoli's post, I said to my wife. Look at this kid here !!! These small czechs are really kicking my a... grin.gif

It's true that I'm not afraid anymore, but still impressed and willing to implement all the solutions given, just for fun.

Ocean West, you've got your new forum : ADMIRATION SOCIEY FORUM.

Let split the FM FeedBack/Support in :

1. a Support

2. a Feedback, more like a golden book.

Thanks for all the feedback guys,

I have contacted one or two companies so now I am going to see how much I can fit into my diary.

BTW I don't know where I would be without the forum. It seems when you have a problem, someone has a;ways experienced it before!

The problem is it can be better to know the potential trouble you are about to face when you start working on an area, than to stumble upon it and then try to sort it out. That is where a course can help.

Hi Mark,

True.

But I would suggest you forget about theorical seminars.

As an ex-teacher (Management, very different from computer/system for the big part of Do It Yourself of the second), I keep a critical eye on these "Holiday-like paid by companies seminars"....

"Professional Seminars" focussed on a specific Topic are welcome. But you would need to have the good questions (again) for both the project you are in and the software/application itself, to gain from these sessions. So I will personaly recommend them to bypass the limits of the DoItYourself.

It's also the whole discussion on educational theory and practice... and on educational programs.

What would be the point of taking an MBA before any professional experience. No matter the educational level or teachers you have, experience will still be the best part of life.

Nothing beats experience! But a good theoretical knowledge is also wonderful.

Back at school they used to say to us that "Good judgement comes from experience, but experience comes from bad judgement."

To put it simply I would be far happier to have a surgeon work on me that has some qualification for what he does (this usualy includes on the job experience) than a rookie, or a guy who built up his experience in medical work while acting as a janitor.

I have recently finished the course offered by MacAcademy in FM6, it is something I would reccomend to any rookie by the way. There were plenty of hints and topics that were new to me. Most I could have worked out for myself but that would have taken time. Much more time than it took me to learn them on these disks. I think I might just go for their advanced scripting course, although it is based on FM5, not a lot has changed when it comes to scripting except for the message dialogs which are one the more useful features in FM6, it might also be cheaper in both my time and finances. If I have questions I can always come back here.

Hi Mark,

I know what you mean. I've always been a reader! I like to jump right in sometimes, but mostly I like to read about it first and apply it later. It's a combination of reading, doing and listening isn't it.

FileMaker has such an incredible ease of use, (especially when compared to other relational databases)you want to get the most out of it. You are going the right direction for you, I don't think there is any doubt about that. And you already know about the forum and I can tell you first hand. Some of the best information you'll ever get is right here!

I got information from these guys on this forum for years. I didn't know enough to give anything back, so I just took what I needed and learned a bunch. Now I have some stars under my name and can actually help someone else once in a while. Can you fathom that?

So you take it now and give it back later and we'll have a better and stronger forum.

Good luck and stay in touch,

hj
