auto open db for web companion sharing?

I'm a newbie here, so please excuse me if I'm missing something obvious...

We want to share a FMPro6 db via Web Companion on our departmental intranet. Right now, a link on our intranet site goes directly to http://server:591, and all is well. The problem is, our server is actually a workstation that people use, and there's no way to insure that the database--or FMPro itself, for that matter--stays open.

I'm trying to figure out how to write a script or something--we're using PHP, though I suppose it doesn't have to be in PHP--on a redirect page to automatically open the the FMPro file. That is, when people click on the "marketing database" link, it will go to marketingdb.php, which will run maybe a script that will run a command-line command to open the file?, then redirect to http://server:591. Our server is running Win2k.

I know this isn't REALLY a question about Filemaker, but I thought someone out there would have experience with this. Thanks!!

If there is no way to insure the db is open, there is no way to ensure the computer is turned on.

On the other hand, if you attach a PostIt "Don't turn off" you can as well attach a PostIt "Don't close database!".

Get another computer and dedicate it to the task of being the FMPU host computer.
