new_user Posted April 12, 2004 Posted April 12, 2004 Could someone explain the difference between Instant Web Publishing and Web Companion? I'm trying to design a database that users can log in to from the web, see only those records that meet the calculation for their account and then be able to modify those records. I have enabled Instant Web Publishing, which seems to work, but don't see the Web Companion anywhere in the program. Thanks. FileMaker Version: 7 Platform: Windows XP
Reed Posted April 13, 2004 Posted April 13, 2004 There is no web companion in v7. To do custom web publishing you will need to have fm server advanced.
Vaughan Posted April 13, 2004 Posted April 13, 2004 Web Companion is the software (middle-ware) that acts as the interface between the web browser and the database. Instant Web Publishing is a feature of Web Companion whereby layouts in the database are converted to html for display on the web. Due to the limitations of HTML and the web interface, there are FMP layout and interface features that cannot be translated into the web interface, so the layouts used for IWP should be designed carefully with these limitations in mind. Web Companion is used in FMP 6 and earlier. FMP 7 uses a different method of generating the web interface.
new_user Posted April 13, 2004 Author Posted April 13, 2004 Thanks for the explanation! Now I can stop searching for the Web Companion.
