Multi-User "Record Locking"

Featured Replies

With multiple users (Peer or Server) how does FMP deal with simultaneous writes? Does it lock records/tables? Does it throw an error?

Thanks in advance.

Bill:

FileMaker locks a record to read-only status when a user is editing it, preventing simultaneous writes of any given record. In a networked environment, any user attempting to edit a record which is being edited by another user gets a message saying that the record is currently being edited by and cannot be modified at this time.

So does the conflict get detected when the 2nd user opens a layout or when s/he attempts to save changes? Also, is this something you typically need to deal with in scripts?

Thanks for the response.

Set Field and other scripted steps that edit records can fail when the record is locked. The best way to test for record locking in FMP 7 and later is with the Open Record script step...

Set Error Capture [on]

Open Record

If [ Get( LastError ) = 0 ]

Else

End If
