Problems creating new portal records

I am setting up a web layout for a new product order record, with a portal to an "order item" related table. However, I'm unable to add new records in the portal via the iwp interface. (I can add one record, but not more than one.) It works fine using the FM program.

Possibly related: I can't click in the "order item" fields to enter them; I can only get to those fields by tabbing into them from a field above.

Please help!

i put a button on the main layout that just runs a script to do an OpenRecord request. that puts the layout in edit mode. works ok for me.
