Newbies hsaker Posted January 12, 2013 Newbies Posted January 12, 2013 I have 5 databases set up on my Filemaker program. I see how to connect tables and files but is there a way to connect the databases themselves? Each of my clients has a unique number assigned and I'd like to figure out how to have certain info auto populate between the databases. I'm currently running FM 9 and am about to upgrade to 12. Maybe this will be more apparent with the new software.... any pointers are appreciated !
Wim Decorte Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 I don't understand... in your mind what's the disctinction between tables and files on the one hand and databases on the other?
Rick Whitelaw Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 If by 5 different databases you mean 5 files, well FM doesn't care whether a table is part of one file or another. Before you're able to link tables from different files together (exactly as you would if they were from the same file) you need to list the files as external data sources. If file A. Needs to relate to files B and C , then files B and C must be listed as external data sources in file A. Then on the relationship graph of file A you will be able to add table occurrences from B and C. At least that's what I think you're asking. This is called a multi-file solution. It has pros and (likely more) cons.
