A Conversation About '2 Factor Authentication'

    By Josh Ormond

[ Edit: 3/16/2016 - With the help of some other people, we have been able to recover, or recreate some of the original images from original thread. ] Security is always a big topic when it involves data, or people, or possessions. Recently, over on the FileMaker Community, there was a very beneficial discussion regarding security. Unfortunately, that discussion was the victim of a necessary action...and was deleted. It was deleted, because the discussion was tied to a video that, as was det

Hacking Your Own FileMaker Platform Solutions

    By Steven H. Blackwell

Hacking Your Own FileMaker Platform Solutions Should FileMaker Platform developers mount hacking attacks on their own solutions? At first glance, this may seem an odd question. But I believe that the answer is “Yes, we should.” Consider this. As developers we see our solutions from a totally different perspective than Threat Agents see them. Without practicing our own hacking skills, we can become blind to the vulnerabilities a Threat Agent can exploit to compromise the Confidentiality

Profile of a Support Developer

by I recently posted about the importance of identifying the type of developer you are or aspire to be. In that article I differentiated between two types of developer: project and support. In this post I will expand on the attributes of a support developer and why those attributes can be important when expressing interest in a new FileMaker development position. A key revenue generator for any FileMaker consulting business is the maintenance of existing systems that are already in production.

Devcon Sponsorship Application Details–Applications Now Being Accepted

by Welcome! On behalf of myself and Cris Ippolite we thank you for taking the time to check out this valuable learning opportunity. Cris and I are both seasoned FileMaker developers whose careers took off after attending the 1997 Devcon in Monterey, California. It was at this conference that we met other developers and gave us both confidence that there was a great need for our services. One of the greatest problems facing the FileMaker Community today is lack of qualified developers. As such,

Apply for a Devcon 2015 Scholarship

by As a developer, trainer, recruiter and coach in the FileMaker industry I know that the number one problem facing our industry is lack of qualified developers. We need more talented developers to build great solutions and to leverage the solutions that are already out there. I am currently working with 5 companies who would like to hire a highly skilled technical lead today and I can’t find any takers. Well–lucky for talented developers you’re probably already busy so one of the areas I belie

Project Manager vs. Technical Lead

by I’ve done a considerable amount of work over the years managing projects for a FileMaker Business Alliance Platinum Level development shop and managing custom development projects for my own clients. On the topic of custom development project management, I have written white papers, presented seminars and Devcon presentations, and coached a number of development shops on the implementation of project management processes. Needless to say, when I’m around others in the development community, p

What kind of FileMaker developer are you?

by As a long time FileMaker guy, I’ve had the opportunity to play many different roles around the business of FileMaker. I started my career as an in-house developer, then I became a developer, trainer, and project manager at a FileMaker Business Alliance Platinum Level company. Later I started my own development, consulting and coaching business. As a result, I have experienced a wide variety of development scenarios and I have come to realize that being a FileMaker developer can mean a lot of

Design Patterns: “Cards” in SeedCode Complete

SeedCode Complete 13 Our newest version of SeedCode Complete has been out for about 3 months and we’ve now had an opportunity to see how people are using and modifying it for themselves and their customers. Happily, one of our customers’ favorite design patterns is the one I’m personally the proudest of: we think of them as “Cards”. It’s essentially an updated take on the Selection Portal or Master Detail design patterns you may have seen. However, the new UI elements introduced in FileMaker 13

Mods: Multi-Point Google Maps

We’ve recently seen some great examples of modding multi-point Google Maps in FileMaker Layouts. Here are two very slick mods based on our ProMaps template… Filtering (and Color Coding) Based on Found Sets. This first mod was done by Lisette Wilson of Informing Designs; she’s linked ProMaps to SeedCode Calendar so that the contents of the map change as users navigate the calendar. That alone is pretty cool, but she’s also letting users change the way the appointments on the map are color coded

A Custom Sidebar for DayBack Calendar

Adding a FileMaker Portal next to DayBack’s WebViewer Recently Arie Covrigaru of PlanOmatic ( http://planomatic.com ) hired us to add some custom features to his DayBack calendar. His main request was to be able to filter the calendar by resource(s) by selecting from a searchable, scrolling list. And he wanted that in the main calendar window, beside his calendar, not in the “advanced filters” popup window where this is usually done. The solution was to nudge the webviewer object 300 pixels to

FileMaker Data Modeling with Selector Connector

Overview The Selector-Connector is a data model for organizing your FileMaker table occurrence graph. It is something we’ve been loosely collaborating on with our friend and colleague Todd Geist. I say loosely, because during the evolution of the model, we never really reviewed each others work, but talked in very general terms about our progress. The fact that we ended up with something so functionally similar makes me think that we’re actually onto something! Todd has a great post and video o

Mapping Found Sets

ProMaps, our Google Maps add-on for FileMaker, lets you use filters to constrain which locations show up in the map. But sometimes you want to go beyond filters and show the results of an ad hoc find request. Using the new List Of function in FileMaker 13 this is now a simple mod and we’ve written up instructions to add this to your copy of ProMaps. JavaScript Portals for FileMaker: Clicking on Rows

Coming full circle with JavaScript and SQLexplorer Having the opportunity to work on a project like SQLExplorer has been a highpoint in my FileMaker career. It was a great way to participate in the collective learning of the ExecuteSQL function by the community when it first hit the scene. But, it’s also been a great way to get a handle on the increasingly popular interaction of FileMaker Pro and JavaScript. The Idea: JavaScript Portals for FileMaker SQLexplorer has always displayed your quer

Double-Single Click Trick

FileMaker Pro Tip-n-Trick: A Double-Single Click Trick By Andy Persons A nice little FileMaker Pro Tip-n-Trick showing you a double-single click trick! Have you ever wanted to add support for double-clicking in your FileMaker Pro solutions?
