Hi I'm trying to define a field with a calculation like this: If ("value of my field is between 600 and 1000 - do this - else do this") I think it can be done with the If(test:result one:result two) but how do I test if my field value in a range? It is probably quite obvious.

I am makeing a simple solution to keep track of my dvd:s (just for practise) and now I figured I want to rate them as well. tought of displaying the rated value graphicaly as bars. Would rate them 1-5 and have a repeating calculation field displaying a box in the first repetition if the value is 1, a box in the first and second repetition if the value is 2 and so on... My problem is I do not know how to get the calculated value to display in the repeated boxes, only the first repetition seems to get any value at all. If anyone have a solution please help me.

I'm brain dead and felt so close to a likely easy solution. Excuse me if this is too wordy. Have an invoice/receipt file and the line item area is a portal. The child file Item record's capture the date and invoice number of the related parent Invoice record. Our fiscal year (FY) is not calendar but 7/1/01 to 6/30/02. I want to generate revenue reports for this off set FY. I thought I could would create a calc field "FY", which would be a nested If calc. To start I tried a non nested approach. I am creating a db that tracks the ethernet ports and their config used on campus. I need to validate that the port # I entered is not a duplicate. Based on the building and room fields. the condidtions that I need to test for are: can't exist in the same building and/or same room, but can exist in the same room but different building. the If (test, result 1, result 2) seems to be the one to use, but I need a way for it to check the room and bldg fields. Would I need a script? I used FMPro about 2 years ago and re-imersing myself in it, but am stumped at this point. Thanks in advance.

Hello all, long time no post for me. . . either means i got it all figured out or i just haven't done anything real challenging in a while. . . probably the latter.. .. .. anyway, i need unique numbers randomized between the values 50,000 and 75,000. This will be in a new field, the records have already been created, so i guess i'll actually have to run a script or do like an import into a clone that calculates as it imports. Does anybody have a method of working with multipage tif files for a cross-platform document management solution on FMP5. The images I have been able to get into container fields seem to only show or give access to the first image with no access to the other pages. I do want to keep the entire image, not just a reference, in the data base to allow multiple levels of security. Thanks in advance

So I'm trying to make a calculation field that will put records into certain groups if one of the fields contains a certain text. Is there an operator "contains" for text field calculations? For example, case (position cn "Basketball", "Basketball", position cn "Ice Hockey, "Ice Hockey", "no sport") Since the text could be at the front or middle of the field, I can't figure out how to make FMP recognize distinct text within a field. Is there any way to add all the values in a repeating field? I have one repeating field called "Time Spent" and one called "Total Time." They are repeating because they are being used for progress reports. I want to have the total time be calculated automatically based on the values in the time spent fields. All it needs to do is add all of the values in the time spent field and autoenter that in the total time field. I guess actually that total time doesn't need to be repeating. I had meant it to be a running total, but it could be a grand total instead. Either way is fine, if someone could tell me if it's possible at all. TIA, Carrie

Hello! I need to define a field that is a bit of a summary field, but also one that gets calculations performed with each record added. I am trying to do a field that gives available hours of vacation after each pay period. The users enter the hours used, and they accrue vacation time at a flat rate per hour worked. So I'm wanting to have: Total Hours accrued + Hours accrued this period - Vacation used this period where Total Hours accrued = Hours earned prior to this pay period Hours accrued this period = hours eligible to earn vacation * flat rate Vacation used this period = hours entered by user as having taken for vac. Im kindof a starter with Filemaker Pro 5.5 and i have the following problem. I dont know how to make from input put in checkboxes or radio buttons a numbercode in my list/report. I want a "budget spreadsheet" with (simplified): 1. Columns as month (12) 2. Rows as line items (Opening, Receipt, Sales, Closing) 3. Pages as Account number & Year number The problem is to have the closing value of a month appear the opening value of the next month without creating circular references! Hi All, I have a very large text field with more than 400 or so characters in it. I have the field maximized to take up most of the size of the screen but it tends to cut off the bottom part of the field and so therefore the person reading the big text field reads only the first 25 lines or so before it doesnt allow the viewer to see more of the text field unless you tab into the field or use your mouse cursor to click into the field. I hope this makes sense. Does anyone know a way around this without making the big text field into multiple fields? Thanks!

I have a layout that has user name and owner names, with a list of identical data for each. I import the needed data from another file by creating a relationship based on the First Middle Last Names. On the paper form, there is a check box to indicate if the user is the same as the owner. I want to be able to check the box, and then have a script or statement that will have the User Firts Name = Owner last Name if the box is checked. Is this possible? I tried the IF statement but it told me I couldn't write it the way I did because it would create a "circular definition". Any ideas out there?

I need to calculate a player's age for a soccer league. The calculation needs to find the player's age (League_Age) on Aug-01-xxxx. For example, this season's age is based on the player's age on Aug-01-2001. This age will not be recalculated until Aug-01-2002. For example, a player with a DOB of Aug-02-1990 will have a League_Age of 10 until Aug-01-2002, even though they have already celebrated their 11th birthday. I've tried taking the age to number of days old then dividing by 365, but DOBs close to Aug-01 are occasionally wrong (due to leap years I presume). I'm creating a report that counts the number of sales leads given to a sales office. That's easy. In this same report I want to count the number of sales leads sold. The problem I'm having is counting these sold leads, because sometimes the original sales office that was given the lead is not always the office that sells it. My setup: "Inquirer.fp5", "Sales History.fp5" & "Sales Offices.fp5" all have a match field inquirerID. Hi there, I have a layout with different fields. I created a tab order. The first field of the Tab order is "Ivoice Number" field. The user has to input a number in the "Invoice Field". If the user does not input a number I would like a Window to pop up and tell the user they need to put a number to proceed. So in the define field option under my validation tab I have 1)strict data type2)Not empty 3)User cannot override. I have a database of students who are eligible to work and have been placed. I want to count the number of students who have been placed. The field "Academy Placement" is formatted as radio buttons, and uses the value list "Academy Placed" which contains the values "Yes" and "No". I want to count only those records where "Yes" has been selected for "Academy Placement", and then summarize them in the summary field "Year Placed". I have a running database for a client that uses the Troi Grabber plug-in. The database is a log for stills for a production company. The grabber plug-in is used to grab images from a Beta deck or scanner. Everything was working great until the database file exceeded 2Gigs. I was not aware of the 2Gig file limit, and now must fix this problem. As far as sizes goes, the database will need to accomadate (eventually) 250,000+ records, each with it's own image attatched. Hi there! I'm fairly new to FM (Pro 5.5). I am trying to set-up letters which we can send out to our clients (pasted text from older AppleWorks Mail Merge letters) and these are working fine (which is nice!). What I am also trying to do though is use peoples signatures inside the letters. I've scanned these in and saved them as Greyscale JPEG's in Photoshop 5.5, but if I copy and paste, insert picture directly, or create a field container, and then insert the picture, the signature comes out "dotty" (not pixelated, but "dots" surrounding the image. On layout "A", I have an override field (a number field - no options selected - the "parent" field is a calculation field showing dollar amount) and i use it when i need to force the field to show zero dollars, overriding the calculation. So i enter "0" and it shows $0.00. Basically my question is, how do i make this $0.00 be blank? I'm actually ok with the $0.00 but on another layout," B", i need the field to show up blank because i have layered it (and the parent field) with another field (making them "see-through"). My solution, served by Server 5.0, is set up to auto assign a new serial on record creation at the click of a button (i.e. "P4096"). I've had two instances today of the same user on a Windows machine being able to produce just a "P" with no numbers in the field. The number sequence is used since a gap between numbers shows up (P4096 | P | P4098). I'm baffled. Has anyone run across this before? Could this be a, I hate to say, "bug" of working in a served environment with multiple users creating records? I've searched the forums, but found nothing similar. Thanks in advance. I've read a bunch of previous posts on date calculations, and thought I understood it but this is weird. I cannot get the calculated date to show up. I've tried a date field that auto enters a calculated value of "currentdate" + 30, this shows nothing. I tried ::invoicedate + 30, still nothing. I've even tried just filling it in with the creation date and that doesn't even come up. What am I doing wrong here?? All I need is the payment due by date to fill in automatically.

I have a data base which contains names and a number for each name. How do I total a names numbers? in otherwords if I have a feild name which contains "Dan" and a number feild with a 15 and another feild "stan" and a number feild with a 10. then a thrid feild with "Dan" again but this time a 5 I want to add a feild which will disply a 20 in both of Dan's records and a 10 in stans record. I am trying to define a range validation for one of my fields. I only want to let the user to enter a one or two letter code. Therefore the range is A...ZZ. So how do I set this up in the options section for defining fields? I have used: In range A to ZZ But this allows for three letters or it allows a letter and then a number. Can anyone help? Thanks

I have a database where an applicant must list all of their previous residences. I would like to automatically enter the move_out date from a previous record as the move_in date of a new record. Because this will be a hidden field and does not affect their actual move in date, it is okay if the field is a calculation since the data does not have to be modified. Gentleman, Small problem inside a larger problem. Large problem first. I need a script that can take an existing series of random four digit numbers and start at 0001 and pick out and apply to a record only those numbers that arent in use yet. I'm trying to compare Field A with Field B in a Master file, and if the (Text) contents are NOT identical, automatically have the word "Changed" entered into Field C. Hi all! With thanks to many here I'm making great progress on a database for a small business. Right now I'm working on entering hours worked for hourly employees. I have most of it except one small part. Usually I have timecards from previous days, for example I might have 60 cards for people who worked yesterday. Is there a way to set a temporary date that will auto fill in the records I'll be entering without changing any previous records? I've got a database that underwent a Recovery, and I have a bunch of text fields left over (Recovered 1, Recovered 2, etc.) I'm pretty sure they're empty. Would it be a good idea to re-use these for a new purpose as opposed to creating new fields? My motivation stems from the fact that I would have to kick all the database users just to define fields, so if I could re-use an existing field and rename it later, that would be best for me.

Hello, Newbie question....Filemaker 5.5.... I have a database for creating a delivery memo. A basic field at the top of the memo is a "Vendor" field. Since I use a fairly regular set of vendors, I was wondering how I would set up that field in a manner that would let me use a "type-ahead" style feature. In other words, I want to be able to type the first few letters of the vendor name and for the rest of the information to pop into that field, so I don't have to type the complete vendor info into that field each time I enter it. I'm using FM 3.0 designing a small business database. One of the fields is an employee's Social Security Number. Is there a way to force FM to only accept entries in the xxx-xx-xxxx format? Similar question for such things as phone or fax numbers; (xxx) xxx-xxxx, making sure an email address has an "@" sign, and so forth. FM is fine with dates and currency, but I can't find anything on other formats. I'd rather not run scripts after the data is entered, is there a way to make sure data is entered in the correct format on the fly, and to politely warn the user if it is not? Thanks! Russ Conte

Almost embarrassed to ask this question as I see the caliber of expertise in these forums but here goes... I have a little database to keep track of 50 employees and I'm working on a layout to help me see when staff are due for reviews. I have a "start date" field and I'd like to create calculation fields based on the same. The calculations would tell me the date of a staff, 90 day, 6 month and annual reviews. 90 day is a one time event, 6 month and annual repeat for as long as they're here (I have an "end date" field too). OK, thanks to everyone here and another go at the manual, I figured out how to set up my Delivery Memo with a drop-down list of vendors from all of my contacts in a 2nd "Vendors" database. Now I can click on the field and my list of contacts comes up automatically for "Ship To:" and "Received From:" fields on the delivery memo. The next problem: In the referenced "Vendors" database (which is years old and has 600+ records) the name and address information for each vendor is split into 4 different fields: Name, Address, City/State/Zip, and Contact name. Changing the number format on a layout only affects how the number appears on that layout; it has no effect on the data itself. In a number field, the US version of FM will treat a comma as a non-numeric character and ignore it. Somehow you have to change the commas to periods. One way is to change a number field to a text field, run a calculated Replace on it:

Hi all, I'm having some trouble with a scheduling system I've created. Currently, the system uses a 'Start" date and an 'End' date. If the Start date has not been reached yet, my calc field will create the date range from Start to End. Example, (Start) 1/1/2002 - End(1/5/2002) will give me: 1/1/2002 1/2/2002 1/3/2002 1/4/2002 1/5/2002 But, if we are past the start date, I have the calc use Today to the End date. So if today is 1/3/2002, my calc gives me: 1/3/2002 1/4/2002 1/5/2002 I'd like to eliminate the Today function and use the Status(CurrentDate) as many people have suggested in the forum. I run a service business where our field employees take digial photos of their job and email them to me. Is it possible to run a script to automatically store the photos in a database? If it is and each photo is identified by its customer number and date is it possible to have it store in the customers database for that service date. so customer number 555 for 12/15/01 photo would read 555121501.jpg. is it possible to sepatate this out? The practice of using an auto-created serial number as a unique record number for each record is one of those things I have always taken for granted. Being a systems administrator and not a database designer, I am finding it difficult to explain in basic terms to a new database designer why EVERY database should have a unique record number. The FileMaker Bible claims they are great for invoicing, and I know I have databases that rely on them for filling in fields via relationships, but I know there is a 1 - 2 sentence explanation on why it is ALWAYS a good practice. Can anyone help me out here?

Our office has a Catalog DB that has lists of books and videos. When someone borrows an item the DB goes to a Reservation DB (which is also related to a Name/Address DB). Right now, the only way to prevent double booking is to notice the portal in both the Catalog DB and the Reservation DB that lists all the reservations by date. I'm looking for more error control. Is there any way to make it where the Date Out field in the Reservation DB would catch the double booking if I tried to type in a date that was in the range in which that particular item was already reserved for another borrower?

i have a bunch of items in a couple of groups. I'm measuring them and coming up with averages and standard deviations. i want to compare those subtotaled averages in a calculation but i can't find a way to store them. i'm resorting to looking at the calculations in a report layout and manually copy paste to a new file. is there a better way? this is my first database. i see things that look like they should help but can't seem to get them there - such as repeating variables. i did a search on the forum and it seems like you have to recreate some of the summary calculations so that you can get the field stored. yikes!

I have a repeating field named "ProductName" and it repeats 2 times. As you can guess it is for products and what I am in need of is to track how many of each product we sell. If I have (for example) "bat" and "glove" as the two products in my repeating (2 times) field and each has a quantity of "1" as defined in a field called "Quantity", I find that I can't write a calculation that that detects that "bat" exists and has a quantity of "1" and that "glove" exists and has a quantity of "1." I use an identical db on my Mac at home as I use on my Win98 at work. On the Mac at home, a calculated "full name" field validated for uniqueness presents a message box with a beep whenever a name first & last name is entered that matches a current record. It then presents the user with the choice of "revert field" or "OK." On the Win db, configured identical to the Mac, the message box comes without a "revert field" option, just the "OK" button. Is there a simple fix for this that I'm missing?

We have client specifiect codes made up of three letters then three numbers eg the first Smith would be SMI001. Is it possible to validate the field so that userrs can only put entries in in this format. The only way I can think of at present would be to have two seperate fields, one for the 'SMI' bit, then one for the '001' bit, then combine the two field in another field. Is this a good way to operate??

I'm working on a scheduling db for a factory; I've got portals showing what jobs are scheduled on what day - that works fine. What I need to do now is get a summary of how many pieces are being made by each machine. I can do a calculation based on the date relationship which shows how many pieces are being made altogether on each day, but cannot figure out how to get the relationship to discriminate between numbers in the Machine Number field (there are only six machines, so it's pretty simple.) I guess what I'm trying to figure out is how to do a double relationship, so maybe I'm in the wrong forum - but I figure it is also a calculation.

I swear I have done this before. I have a field that uses auto-enter "Creation Date". I want a second field to give me the date 30 days from the creation date. so in that second field I did a calculate: Quote::Created Date + 30 with result being date. I get a ? mark. HELP!! I am designing a meal planner for myself and friends. I have designed a basic layout for Food, Calories, Protein, Carbs, etc. but I don't want to define a field for each occurence of these trhoughout the day. In other words, there could be as many as 100 for each Food, Calories, etc. if I were to do so and I would like to group things into meals 1-6 for each day with puling values from a relational list I have desgined. Hello all, I am trying to create a calculation that will find all occurences in the database with the value selected from a relational value list in the NAME field. My problem is getting the calculation to reference the NAME field from all records to tabulate the number of occurences in the TOTAL field. I've been using Filemaker for 15 years and currently have 5.0 Windows version. I use a Dell PC with a Pentium III processor and 256MB of RAM. I daily use about 10 different relational databases and one is 100MB in size. I continuously use my Filemaker databases for 8 to 10 hours every day. Recently, especially in the 100MB database, but also in a couple of my smaller databases, I have had to Recover them (3 times in the last 2 weeks for the 100MB database, and once each for 3 of my smaller ones). Probably a dumb question but here it is anyway... When you create a text field, you can go to options, then validate, then choose "Member of Value List" so that the entered info in that field must be a member of a certain value list. Is there a quick way to do this for global fields or will I have to create a script to do the validation for me?

I have the need to send portal rows into separate fields in my database, as the portal rows, although they look like they sit in one record, actually exports as separate records with blank fields. Is there a calculation element that manipulates or concatenates data from the portal rows? I've got a script running through all the rows in order to send data to the fields, but with a dozen rows and 2000 records, it's taking forever to run the script. This is probably simple. I'm trying to do some scheduling, and each item in the database has a "Date Scheduled" field. In order to display a few days at once, I want to be able to have calculation fields for the following days. I'm trying to use DatetoNum(Date Scheduled) +1 but that's not working (for the next day) - I don't even get a value in the field with that. Is there another way to do it?
