I have a problem with dollar amounts when using calculations. I have an order total field which is a calculation to total up items on an order, shipping and sales tax. Then I have an amount paid field. And finally I have a total outstanding field that subtracts the amount paid from the order total. I have found though that because the order total is formatted down to two decimal places depending on the math I might end up showing a -$0.01 total outstanding even though the order total and amount paid are equal. So I want to find a way to round to two decimals, not just format a field to only show 2 decimals. Does that question make sense? Thanks in advance.

Has anyone worked out how (if) you can use scribble fields from a Pocket PC device captured using Visual CE. I note that Syware say that container fields are not supported but I was wondering if there was a way around it. I like the idea of using Visual CE, but if I cannot capture signatures from the device then I cannot use it.

Hi, I'm stuck on what I think should be something simple. I have several numeric fields (Number1, Number2, Number3, etc). I need another field (MinNumber) to calculate the smallest nonzero value from the set of numeric fields. I tried using the Minimum function but that won't find the smallest nonzero value (it only returns zero because one of the numeric fields invariably contains 0). Nested If/Then statements doesn't seem appropriate since there are a few dozen numeric fields to check. TIA.

Hi I want to store portaldata into ONE calcfield. I have 2 db's, filtering on a countryname. DB#1 holds the info of the person inquiering, #2 holds companies that provide the needed info. If in DB#1 a field is populated with 'USA', it'll show up in the portal (in DB#1). I have a field that requires not empty and must be filled with one of two values from a pop up. It is one database that houses two companies. I have a message that pops up saying "Please choose a company" My problem the validation message is popping up on another field when tabbed to. The message is coming up on a date field that I use to set my appointments. I have checked the date field and no validation is set. Hello, I'm using Filemaker Pro 7, trying to migrate to MySQL 4.1 using the FmPro Migrator. I have JPEG images in a container field, not using file references. I import the JPEG images myself and they are stored in the database. For some reason, when I try to migrate the images to MySQL, it seems that FileMaker is just storing a filename referencing the JPEG files, not the actual data. My size of my images are about 60KB, but when I migrate it, it becomes 28B. When I import these pictures files, the there's a check box in the import options to import only as a reference to each picture file, and I'm sure that check box is unchecked. So how can Filema…

Hey all, Ok, I'm a newbie to Filemaker and am having an issue with a project at work. Here's the situation - I created a sweet address database. However, information in one of the fields only appears in Find or Browse Modes (not in Preview or printed copies). Does anyone have advice regarding this issue? I have just upgraded from Dev7.0v2 to Dev7.0v3 and all my containers are behaving differently. I have used Containers extensively to allow users to set tab colors etc. The problem I am having is previously I had the image in container going right to the edge, with line set to zero (except it did require field borders to be on) - this ensured the image went directly to the field extremities. Now (in 7.0v3) the field border is always 1 pixel. I need my containers to go edge to edge. Does anyone have any idea of what I can do? Am I missing something? I think it has something to do with the fix FileMaker made when buttons were behaving badly in 7.0v2. Thanks …

I have created a database that I want to allow me to quickly lookup information in regards to Photoshop and FileMaker. I am finding QuickTime Movies and PDFs that I am adding to my database. Yes, I know, importing files will make my database larger but I do not want to deal with the hassle of keeping an external location for reference files. My problem is that every time I import either movies or PDFs, they are not added to the database but only referenced. I have tried Inserting, Importing and pasting and in each case I have a reference not the actual file in my database. When using Importing, I have deselected "Import only a reference .....". One of my biggest troubles with FileMaker is working around unindexable calculations. I often need to base a relationship on this information, and I'm continually trying to find the best workaround. My latest idea was to take advantage of the new auto-enter calculation feature where you can specify that the calculation should replace the existing value of the field, but this doesn't seem to work when the calculation is based on related data. Greetings and Happy Holidays. I'm having a, hopefully, small and easily correctable problem. I have two databases. One that i used for one project, the second created for another project. I created the second database by making a duplicate of the first and then making the needed changes. Hello, i'm a filemaker newbie. I'm building a purchase order system for my company and the standard Purchase Order template does not fit my needs. How can I compare 2 fields that are the same, except for case, and have them come up as not equal? Example: Field-1="ABC", Field-2="abc". I'd like to write a calculation that uses the field name (that the calculation is in) as part of the expression. For example, if a have the field "Count Code 30" and I'd like to have the "30" usable inside the calculation, can that be done? I did a quick search for this and didn't find an answer. But here's my question. well, all my employees are screaming again... they want me to design a way for them to show the students in a schedule type. I have created a list, which is great for roll calls and things, but they need something that shows a more graphical way, something like what the relationship tables on FMP7. Colums with the classes seperated by time, ie, column 1, 3:00 class, students in that class, 3:30 class, students in that one, and the columns would be the days of the week. Would someone more knowledgeable than I tell me how to make a calculation field that allows me to display an average (as a percentage) of the number of times a "YES" radio button (or check box) has been set compared to the "NO" box? A "Not Applicable" choice or no choice at all should not count. In case that is possible, what about calculating a percentage based on three or more buttons? Files that are on a different comptuer in my network and whose references I've stored in a container field do not open when I control+click the file path and select "open file." I have filemaker 5 and I am trying to use extend for a simple function. I have a start number of 245, from that I am trying to subtract values in a repeating field and have the result displayed in a repeating field. It is set up as remaining(result) = extend(start number)- repeating field (any value) For the first row it works for the second and third rows I get a negative number. It doesn't seem to be using the 245 for each calculation. Am I missing something??

I know in HTML i can create a script that when a user selects a drop down list, it takes that user to a certain page. Well, is it possible in Filemaker for a user to have a list of options in a value list assigned to a field, i.e. New Record, Delete Record, Duplicate Record... so that when a user selects that option, it performs that script? I am trying to minimize buttons and that seemed to be the best thing to do.

I need a calculation that I can use within a set field script step that will look at the current date and from that determine what the date on the Monday of that week is/was. Similarly I'll need calcs for each or the remaining four business days, but I'm assuming if someone can point me in the right direction for the Monday calculation, I can alter it to get the calcs for the rest of business week. I receive a txt file with date information formatted as: 20040726 (no delimiters) Is there a magic (read: straightforward calculation) way in FMP7 to convert this to a date formatted as 7/26/2004? I have a number of large text fields that take up the right half of the screen. To permit access to all the fields and at the same time allow the user to see the full text, I stacked the fields and have buttons just to the left that are scripted to go to the appropriate field. However, this alone can allow the user to forget what field he/she had entered. My database is used for student demographics and other needed data collection for reports. At the beginning of the school year I was able to get help regarding the AGE field from this forum. The formula that was given to me to automatically calculate the age when the DOB was input was grateful [color:"brown"] . Now I have run into the issue of keeping that AGE updated. I want a way to either gray out or be able to control access to related fields based on what the client selects for the primary field's answer. For example, if the client selects "Yes" from a pop up menu for the Primary field for "Was A CT Scan Done?" then they can access the remaining related fields.... I have a couple of fields that must have data entered in a perticular format and would like to find a way of validating the data. basicall the data must be entered as groups of 3 letters with a space separation between groups eg LAX NYC MIA There can be no spaces at the start of the field, there must be only one space between each group and the groups must consist of 3 letters, or a specific symbol (@ or / followed by two letters). The number or groups entered in one field can be anything from 1 to 40. I've noticed that occasionally when I open up a FM 7 database the contents of some global text fields are getting erased. This isn't a by-product of a script or a user - I've seen this occur in two totally different databases. Has anyone else seen this? Known bug? It appears to be totally random to me. In Excel I can set up a database that allows me to ask questions, getting a YES or NO answer for each, and calculating the responses (number of YES compared to NO, expressed as a percentage etc). If you change the position of fields in the Define Fields window, will it change the order in which calcs are processed? I used to use Symantec's Q&A. In it you could decide the order. I'm asking because I wonder, if the order were more logical relative to the algorithm, instead of being in a simple chronological order (when created), if the process might run faster. Ok... this may be a totally boneheaded question, but I'm new to Filemaker, so bear with me... I have a filemaker database which lists repaired units by serial number. I'm simply trying to calculate the number of instances a particular serial number is represented within the database in a tabular view. That's the first hurdle. I import many records from a text file on a regular basis. One of the fields has a book call number such as QA76.9.D3M445 1993 I need to recalculate that field so that it looks like QA 76.9 D3 M445 1993 So, in this example I need to add a space after the "A" , remove the second "." and replace with a space, and add a space after the "D3" All of the values of this field are consistant in that they all need a space after the first two letters, replace the second "." with a space and add a space before the second letter after the removed "." I'm new to Filemaker, trying to make a 30 day evaluation. I have many records each day, with Date, Subject, and Amount. For each date, I want to extract just the Highest Amount record of each subject for a report. So each subject with have one line for each day, which is the record where Amount is the Maximum on that date for that subject. I am trying to work on making my address book database a little friendlier. So when I print labels (like for my Xmas cards that havent been sent yet- hurry!) This is my initial post as a Novice. I'm using a FM (7.0) database of parsed server access logs to study visitor usage patterns to my site (www.the-intuitive-self.org). I am working on a employee evaluation database. The Employee file contains one record per employee. The Evaluations file contains many evalautions filled out for each employee. The files link on the employee ID no. My question is this, let's say an employee, John Doe, has 7 evaluations. Each evaluation has 9 performance factors (PF). Each PF has a numeric rating and comments. I can average the ratings and give a average per PF, but I would like to combine the comments for each PF into it's own PF total comments field. Somehow I volunteered to build a contact list and integrated production order database for my company...wise idea... I've managed to build and integrate almost everything, from existing templates included with FMP 6, but have one problem. In the contact database, I have two fields that I would like to work together. Hi, fresh user here... Just wanted to know if it't possible to have a lookup "looking" at 2 different things... I have an invoice table and a budget table (and a products table)... I want to be able to use a yes or no field to select if i want to populate the "QT", "Description", "Value", etc. fields with data from the budget or fresh new one form the prducts table, this way creating a new invoice without a budget... I used lookups fields and they work with the budget, but now i can't find a way to move form budget to products table... Budget table aslo acesses the products table. Thank you all...

I'm trying to display a field that tells the user if a piece of Kit is on hire, or in stock. I have a kit table and a hires table. At the moment a script checks to see if there is an entry in the hires table for the piece of kit. It then checks all found hires to see if one doesn't have a return date (each hire has a start and return date). If it doesn't have a return date it must be on hire, if it does, it is in stock. Currently the user has to click an update button for each piece of kit, to check it's availability. Is there any way to put all the script action into a single field, so it updates on it's own?

I have 2 Date Calculations I need to figure out, and I figured I'd ask them here first before driving myself crazy trying to get it right. Duration Between two times would be time2-time1? How do i get it be a duration and not an AM or PM? How about if time2 goes into the next day? And here's the hard one. The result of that duration needs to be multipled with a percentage, I.E. a 6 second duration times 10% equals 1 second. How would I do that? What I'm trying to achieve is this ... Is there a way to create a trim function that will trim ALL non-printing characters? The built-in Trim function only takes care of leading/trailing spaces. Barring that, maybe I can set an "In range" limit on the field? But how would I do that if I wanted to include everything except non-printing characters? There are a number of odder characters (punctuation, foreign chars, etc.) I'd like to keep.

I'm pretty new to FileMaker and very new to building expressions... I'm trying to build an expression that will compare 2 fields and not let me create 2 records where field A contains a value and field B contains a value. For example, I want to make it impossible for the following to happen: Record 1: Field A=1; Field B=100 Record 2: Field A=1; Field B=100 In this table, it is possible for Field A to have duplicate values amongst many records, and for Field B to have duplicate values amongst many records, but there cannot be any duplicates as I specified above. I've got a few fields in my solution that don't update their values unless I physically put the cursor in them and click...sometimes. I can't figure out why some fields do this. It makes no difference whether the field is in the layout as a field or as a merge field. What could go wrong in this simple calc? Get(Recordnumber) & " of " & Get(foundrecords) Had to translate the recordnumber and foundrecords from swedish... The first one should give me the recordnumber of the active record, the second one the number of records in the found set. Instead I get the recordID and the total number of records. WHY?

I've been given a DB which contains images that are embedded in container fields. I now want to change this so that the images are referenced instead of embedded, so need to export and then re-import the images. I could go through them one by one, but as there are over 1600 images, I was wondering if there was an easier way i.e. a way to do a batch export of container field contents? Also, I need to publish this DB on the web, so I just want to check if there are any differences between doing this with the images embedded or referenced? Any advice would be appreciated.

I am using a "Case" calculation function to populate a calculated field. I have one field that is populated with data that is imported from an external file. Lets call it Type and it can have similar values like Item 1 (v1.0), Item 1 (v1.1), Item 2 (v2.0) Item 2 (v2.2), Item 2 (v2.5) etc... Hello, I am new to Filemaker Pro (7) and I am trying to figure out how to calculate a date based on another date. For example, if a "Last Payment" field contains 12/10/2004 how do I automatically fill the "Next Payment" field with 1/10/2005 or 3/10/2005? In other words, how do I add a specified amount of days to the "Last Payment" date value and have FMPro generate a date? I have looked in several texts and have not found any examples like this. I'm currently having a problem with the speed at which records are listing in one of my layouts. The problem is due to two complex calc fields that take time to recalculate but that have to be shown and that the system forces me to leave unstored. I'm wondering if there's a way I could put something at the end of the calculation so that they set a noncalc field to the value they calculated? That way in the listing I could show the non-calculated fields instead.

Oh I'm back. You all helped me with this but I had to change it because they changed what they needed. Inserting percentage. They want buttons with 10-15-20 etc. AND NOW they also want to enter the percentage in the field directly. And then click Apply and change a dollar field or still click a number button like before. I have buttons with script parameter of 10, 15, 20 etc. attached directly to the Apply Discount script. apply script would look at gDiscount (global text) and if it's empty, just use script parameter instead but if it has a value, use it instead. I've been playing with ideas to find customer names that are similar. This is because we have many duplicates. Pattern Count doesn't work, ! doesn't work. I need something that finds similar ones that someone can then find to manually compare. I've been playing with using Filter. It seems to me that if two fields are compared and contain the same letters (most of them) that they might be the same. I attached my play file. Am I on the right track here? Can anyone see what my thinking is, and would something like this work? Or maybe I should include their address also, although someone could have moved. I have a need to take a Age Calculation and convert it to a School Grade Calculation. For Example 5 years old would show 0 for Kindergarten 6 years old would show 1 for First Grade 7 years old would show 2 for Second Grade. I tried to copy and paste my age calucation into a text field that had a case function tied to it that would convert the numbers to the grade level...but my age calculation doens't have whole numbers.. it shows for example 5.888111119. Hello all. I am trying to get our staff members to consistently enter data into a particular field (tentatively titled a "NOTES" field). They have been less than compliant in doing so. What I would like to do is make this field mandatory - like in an HTML form. Is is possible to not let the user exit a record until completion of a field? Or at the very least can some sort of an alert button be activated instructing the user to complete that particular field? I have two tables, Matches and Goals, with a MatchID relating the two. One of the match layouts needs to display the match details (locations, teams etc.) which is easy, but is also required to display the score. The Goals table holds details of the MatchID, TeamID, Player who scored and the time. I'm assuming I can place a calculation field into the Match table to tell me the number of related records from Goals, but I don't know where to start. Also there is the added complication of Teams. The Match table includes the TeamIDs of the two teams playing, so the calculation needs to know which team scored the goal. Can anyone help? Thanks

I have a simple database with students. They each have a unique ID number. They each have a Country of Citizenship. On my layout I have Total Students as a Trailing Grand Summary. How do I also list Total Countries at the end of the report, so it will list total distinct countries? It should be about 87, and the total number of students 1173. Hi, I know I've previously posted a time formatting question, but for the life of me I can't get it to work the way I want to. In Access I was able to format the time so the user would time four digits (####), and the time would format ##:##. I can't get that to work in FM Pro (so far, that's been the only thing I can't get it to do vs. access). I've tried everything, I thought it would be as simple as choosing the format (military time), and the separater ":". Right now when the user types in "1515" it will format as "1515:00". Okay I have File1, File2 and File3. File1 and File2 are used to record two different but similar types of data. Depending on inputs on File1 and File2, users maybe required to reenter data into File3 for reports that combine File1 and File2 Pertinent Data. I have 2 fields, test and test2. Test2 is a text field I use for input (or a number field, it makes no difference to my problem) Test is a calculation that returns a number with the formula TextToNum(test2). I want to see if test2 contains a numeric, if not I expected test to be blank. It works as expected except when test2 contains no numerics and starts with the letter f, n, t or y. Upper/lower case makes no difference. If test2 starts with f or n, then test=0. If test2 starts with t or ty, then test=1 I can figure out a work-around, but this bugs me. I have the following fields: name, street, city, state, zip I have a relationship tied to a customer file with the customer name in both databases as the relationship. I also have a relationship to a zip database. Is there any way I can have the fields autofill if the customer numbers match but if there is no customer number or match, be able to have the zip code relationship fill in the city & state? I know I'm trying to have the city & state fields have 2 relationships. Not possible?
