i for one was pretty excited when i saw the announcement for 5.5 and i can't believe how quiet everyone is being here. can anyone shed more light on the developer features? i have yet to play with a copy but the thoughts of record level security, get field, and a script debugger are making me nearly salivate. is it that FM is finally giving us developers something to play with? so what's the silence? post your thoughts on 5.5 here and try to focus on the functionality and not the upgrade price if you can. i'll try to get a demo and check it out soon but i am swamped with dev in 5.0 and don't want to tempt fate with a 5.5 install right now. jodin

There is something occurring in my db that is puzzling. I have a text field that appears on several layouts. Simple text field, not global. Some of these layouts print in B&W and some print in color. On the B&W layouts, when I change the Text in this field to B&W, the text in the same field on the color layouts changes to a different color than the original assigned color. On other color layouts, this text changes to Lt Grey. If I then go to a color layout and change the text to its original assigned color, it appears in the correct color on the all color layouts AND also in color on the B&W layouts. Hi, I was tasked to do scheduling for one of the office machines. My FMP knowledge is quite at infancy so I could really use some help here. Basically, here's how it goes... user1 logs in and sets date, start_time and end_time. (start_time: 8:30am - 12:30pm user2 : logs in with similar date but diff start and end times. (start_time: 11:00am - 3:00pm) I would like FMP to intercept this schedule and prompts user2 "Your schedule is conflicting with userN". Then a layout will popup containing the schedules for that month highlighting (red font) the schedule(s) that are conflicting. I wonder what others think about the "new and exciting" features in FMP5.5? I for one am somewhat disappointed. The prices charged are reminiscent of a full version upgrade , rather than what looks like a maintenance fix. bidirectional ODBC ?- that should have been there in the first place retained and resizable windows? - hold me down.. script runs on loading a page? - ditto windows 2000 compatibility? - not for everyone direct send mail? - that should have really been present in the first place. etc etc Oh, and they have still retained that evil repeating field... Although I haven't played with the full version of FM 5.5. yet, I noticed an annoying bug in the trial version of both FM 5.5 for Mac OS 8-9 and OS X. Namely, some of my files open as if they were protected with a password (they are not) and I cannot access neither the layouts nor scripts. They can be opened easily in FM 5. This happens only with 2 files of my 6-file solution. Opening the files individually doesn't help and holding the option key to bring up the password dialog box doesn't do anything (obviously). I just hope that this behavior is unique to the trial version as I have already ordered the full version. By the way, is there a way to report bugs directly to…

I have Filemaker Pro 4.0v3 running of a NT 4.0 Server. The users access the database over a network. However, the Filemaker has started closing unexpectedly on the server, and seems to be doing this fairly often. What could be the cause of this? One of the databases does have quite a lot of records, but the physical file size is about 50 Mb. I'm thinking the server could be running low on resources, but not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am considering installing FMPro Unlimited on a Compaq Proliant 2500 server with Microsoft Small Business Server 4.0. Will I be limited to 25 simultaneous connections because of SBS or will FMPro Unlimited allow an unlimited amount of connections? I will be using FMPro to instantly publish some databases at the school where I am the network admin.

Do you know of anyone who has designed a US map into FileMaker? I need it for sales tracking. You know, the old "US map on the wall" where you stick pins into the cities where you do business. I'm installing FileMaker Pro 5 on 175 workstations and have found that a few workstations lock up the first time FileMaker Pro 5 launches. It begins to build the font menu and then locks completely somewhere near the end of the list. When I turn off some fonts it seems to launch fine. Does anyone know what the limit is on fonts? Can someone please explain how I would intergrate Unlimited into the following scenario. Our Internal DB's have all been served via FMServer, over the past few month's we have been developing an online order system which will be rolled out to selected customers only. Because of the limitations of FMPro serving to multiple users. How do I intergrate the Webside into our existing system. 1) Do you need to Run unlimited on a dedicated machine and share the mian DB's on FMServer via the HOST connection? 2) Do you run duplicates of the DB's and then create a link back for updateing? much appreciated in advance

I just started using FMP5 recently and am VERY frustrated by the fact that the relationships that are set up in this set of files keeps breaking down. This has never happened to me in FMP4 before and I can't even seem to redefine these relationships myself after the fact. It just won't do it... I have had to revert back to the original file and start my work again twice now, losing hours and hours of my precious time. Anyone experienceing these problems at all? Any advice? Please help before I go crazy... thanks

I've been using FM successfully on the Mac for several years and more recently on the PC. I've entered a master password to secure a database file with a subordinate password in place for the others and ... you guessed it ... now, I can't get back in. On attempting to access the file the prompt "ACCESS DENIED" appears BUT none of the menu items allow the entry of a password to access the file! I know the password. I've tried to access it from another password accepted file, although I'm still denied entry. It would appear therefor, that you can get to lock yourself out of your database file by default. Can anyone help?

I've selected "auto-enter modifier name" for one of my fields. When a record is modified, some user's names are entered in the field, other's computer addresses. I'd like everyone's name to appear, but don't know where Filemaker finds the Modifier's name. The database is on a network, but Filemaker isn't showing the network log-in names in the Modifier field. Comments appreciated.

I have a database that I would like to put on the web. The database contains a very friendly user interface with lots of buttons. However, when this database is brought up on the web, none of the buttons function. I pulled out my Filemaker Bible to find the answer. It says that this is a limitation. Scripts will not be activated when the database is hosted. The only button that will function is one that has "go to layout...." Is this true with Filemaker 5.0? Does Filemaker 5.5 solve this incompatibility issue? Any answers are appreciated. Thanks. Thumperman

Is there a way to have one computer without filemaker 5 Pro. CALL up another computer with fm and stay linked all day? There's a video store who have an old unix database setup that's used to link 2 stores together for rentals and stuff. The guy dosen't want to hafta have both comps dialup on the internet because the location is in a town that only has one local number internet access provider, and they run a very unstable service. Ya can't log on at times (password server is down), busy signals etc... BTW, the computers both run win 98 and currently have no networking abilities other than what win 98 might provide. hello, I have owned FMP5 since it was launched. All of a sudden it has become so sluggish.As examples, I can't select a word by double clicking; it takes 6 seconds to open an item in the Menu; copy/paste takes 7 seconds ;if there is a relationship, well, it's an eternity ;in fact, everything is slowed down. I tested with a database with one record ,one text field,no relationship. The version is 5.0v3 English. The system is Mac 8.6, on a PowerBook 3400,240Mhz, 64Mo. Virtual memory is on. Hi All-- I am trying to think of a clever way to add dashes to a field. For example, I have a field called telephone # which contains 7 digits. I have another field called telephone no dash. Currently, telephone dash is the field users will be doing data entry. The telephone # field is a calculation field = left(telephone no dash,3) & "-" & right(telephone no dash,4). I have a file of songs and a file where of dates and song that were used. I want to be able to create a new record in the file of dates and then search the file of songs and add ones to be used to the new record that contains the date. I had thought of using a repeating field that I would click on and it would take me to a search screen where I would then have a pop up portal of songs to choose. The song chosen would be copied and pasted into the next blank repeating field. I could do as many or as few as I needed. I am hoping someone can confirm if this is possible, and steer me towards the best solution. I have a DB with about 5,000 records. About 200 users at 8 sites input data into their subset of records three times a year through a web interface. At a set time after input, I have to print one report from each record. The users then distribute these hard copies to their clients. I would also like to run another print job and write each record to an individual PDF file, and name that file with values from one or two fields from that record. I have a network of Macs (G4 400s & 500s, and two iMac DVSEs) When I work LOCALLY, and when I am trying to import 12,000 records into a existing DB of around 30,000 records or if I am just deleting records, every once in a while I get the error messge "Sorry FM is unable to update the disk this file is on. Click continue to try again, or click Quit and copy this file to another disk." I haven't seen this before, and it doesn't matter what computers the DBs are on. Version of FM is 5.0.3, Mac OS 9.0.4 I am out of ideas! has anyone seen this before?? ------------------ Cybrwolf

Hi, I'm trying to configure Lasso to work with Dreamweaver and FMP on Windows 2000. When I go to Edit> Preference> Application and try to configure the Web companion to change the port from 80 to 591 I get a message saying: 'The webcompanion cannot share files over the web because of a network error (-3)' No other explanation given. Can someone please help me sort this? Do I need to set the TCP/IP address of the local computer? If so how do I do that on Win 2000? The localhost/lasso bit works fine. Harmen

Win98 Converting Solution From FM4 to FM5 I have FM Developed 4.0v3. and my solutions will not convert propertly to FMP5v3. I can create a new solution in FM5.0v3 and everything works fine. When I convert my old FM4 solutions they will crash when I print and some scripts will cause a crash. This makes my solutions totaly unsable in FM5v3. Is there a fix to the conversion problem? One of my clients is finally upgrading their old coal fired server (Apple workgroup server 130Mhz) to a new machine. Because of the number of users involved they don't want to upgrade the software right now. So, they will stay with version 3 on the new computer. My question: Has anyone experienced compatability problems with FM Server 3 and OS9 ? If so, what version of OS is recommended?

I am usinging Filemaker 3.0 with Windows98 operating system. I have a "customer" and a "sales order" database. I have created a script (actually two scripts) that go from the customer database to the sales order database. Basically, it is desigend so the sales clerk can find the customer information, then hit a button which opens a sales slip which has the customer information on the top of the order form. Hi ! I have a problem. Does anyone know's Filemaker Pro 5 support russian language ? The problem is when I try to fill some form in my web browser (in russian language) and put all data to a database, in Filemaker I see some characters which are not cyrillic strings. I could choose a font in Filemaker and write on russian, but when I try to put some information through the web into database, I have this problem. As any patch for Filemaker which have a multilanguage support. As I understand my version of Filemaker Pro 5 support only English, German, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, French languages. Hello all, I'm using Filemaker 4.0 on an NT 4 Server running service pack 4. A couple weeks ago they had a problem whereby Filemaker was open, the databases were open and shared, but when they clicked hosts, they saw nothing. I wasn't there, so I told them to close Filemaker, reopen it, and open the databases, and this worked. Yesterday the same thing happened. I'm wondering if this is some sorta TCP/IP problem or what? I am trying to define a field to be calculated based on another field's value(s) which happens to be a checkbox. I can get the results I am looking for by evaluating only one of the checkbox options (if only one is checked off, where there are more than one options checked off, this calculation will not work), but I am having trouble figuring out what the syntax would be to find all of the field_name(s) where checkbox = (option)3 whether or not the checkbox is checked for just option 3 or if it is checked for option 2 and 3, 1 and 3 or 1, 2 and 3. I am sharing the FMP5 database (as a guest) from the Win2K server (the host). The print devices of the win2k were shared and working fine..(when i print from other softwares, e.g. word2k) However, I have a printing problem with FMP5. When i use HP LaserJet 6L(PCL) to print, it give me a blank page! When i use Xerox DocuPrint P8ex to print, it printed what i want. I spent some big bucks on FMP5 Developer. Now I've got two of my own PCs that I use networked and I wanted to share a database for my own personal use. When I installed FMP5 on each machine and then tried to open the second machines software while the first was runnign it gives me an error message that I can't do that with the licenses! Is there a way around this. I am the one user that is licensed and I am the only one using it. I thought most licenses you could put the software on more than one machine as long as you were the only user. Hello, I just figured something out that may interest a few people. It's certainly no cure for cancer but if you're looking for an easy way to hookup a bar code scanner to your computer and test out some things with it on Filemaker, it's pretty neat. All ya need to do is goto Radio Shack and get their Cue Cat bar code reader, they give 'em away for free. It is very IMPORTANT tho that you just connect the scanner and don't install their software driver. PLEASE forgive this newbie post, but I'm not used to FileMaker 5's method of managing privileges AT ALL - I've never needed to use it before now. I've thoroughly checked out FM's help section, the online FAQ, and several of these forums, and haven't found any mention of the seemingly odd problem I'm having, and I SWEAR I followed the instructions "by the book". I have installed FMPro 5 on W2000 and it does not run. An hour glass comes up and program appears to be starting but then nothing. In Task Manager program is running as a process. In Safe Mode program will run. Anyone know of any possible issues. I have tried with LAN card disabled and with basic VGA monitor driver as both these have been suggested as possible problems. I am having a problem with fm5 on my powerbook 400. When I quit, it is very slow in doing so and does it "rythmically". Almost like it is going to the hard drive and performing some function first. Hi Gurus! I need to PRINT an order receipt... imagine this is a simple POS application. I've got the order screen all done, with line items and I want a PRINT button to activate a script and print my receipt. What printers are out there for this use? 10 years ago, I used Star Micronics 3 or 4-inch wide dot matrix printers... are these still around? Greetings FMGods.... Hope someone can give me a hand. We built a FM5 database to track outgoing/incoming repairs and loaned equipment for our office. Our office consists of 2 Apple G3 Powermacs, 2 IBMThinkpads running Win98, and one more Thinkpad running Win2000. The database resides on a server running WinNT4.0 Recently, we began having trouble. It seems that the Win98 clients cannot open the database regularly. We aren't sure if it is just first thing in the morning (after an overnight backup ran) or if it's any time after the Win2K client has opened the database. On a PC system it has been observed that FILEMAKER PRO 5 will hang just after loading if the VXD notify.vxd is loaded. This appears in the [386Enh] section of the system.ini file as the line: device=notify.vxd This driver appears to be use by the debugging software DBWIN32 (from DBWINV2.ZIP) which generates a windows display for printf statements to stdout.

I am helping a user setup a 2 file related application on 2 win2k pro machines. He has 2 seperate license of FM v5 installed on both machines, opened and verified that multi-user is selected on both files on the host machine and also that local data access companion is checked. He has shared the folder of the host machine allowing full control to the everyone group and has added everyone group to the security permissions of the folder with full control. Yet when he tries to open the FM file from the client machine he gets the error that the file is in single user mode or that the host cannot be found. The data files are in a subfolder off of the filemaker pro folder. …

I've been searching for a Filemaker file that has a lyout already set up for the HCFA 1500 and UB 92, but no luck. Unless I can find one, I'll have to recreate the wheel. It seems there are all sorts of Filemaker meidcal office solutions out there that contain the HCFA1500 and UB92, but they are all part of a comprehensive billing software that cost an arm and leg. If anyone has one, I'd be glad to pay a modest fee for a pre-made layout of these. I'm also struggling with the electronic billing piece if anyones had some experience with that. I have been using FM5 for our Customer Support Database for a few weeks now, having upgraded from FM3. I have had no problems with FM5 until yesterday where the application started crashing randomly while carrying out scripts. One script simply makes a SEND call to an Adobe Acrobat document for viewing statistics. I saw no problem in doing this as FM3 worked without error. This morning however when I open my main database I get an "Exception Error" once the file starts to load. Dear All, Firstly, I hope I have chosen the right area to post my topic, if not then I apologize. My problem is I have created new file maker files, and put them on the FM Server, and opened them. Now, I need to change some password privilages; I closed the files using the remote administration, but when I open the file seperately, and come to the File menu the "Define Fields", "Define Value Lists ", "Define Relationships" options are dimmed. Also all the "Acces Privilages" options are dimmed. I can't understand why. Now, if I remove any of those files to another machine (either guest or server), I get access to those options on the menu. FM 4, Mac G3 8.6 Everything works fine, i.e. text modified in source file is updated in master via Relookup EXCEPT if a field is EMPTIED in source file, then nothing happens in master, i.e. field still contains all entries which have been deleted in source. We are designing a database that my wife will use on film production work. She is a script supervisor and must track many items, including script pages. Here's our dilema. Script pages are dealt with in eighths. So, if you are calculating pages, you might have 2 and 1/8 pages, or 3 and 3/8's pages, etc. As part of her job, my wife each day has to track a lot of information related to script pages--total pages shot, total pages added to the script, total pages deleted from the script, etc. We'd like to have her be able to do this within the the database we are creating. I know I can make a button and attach the script that way, but if the user selects the pulldown menu in filemaker and chooses to add a new record, the script wont execute. Every time I have a new record made, I need to run a script that will cycle thru EVERY record and increment an Order Field I have. I need the script to first sort the "Assignments ID" then fill up the "Set Order" fields in every record from start to end in increments of 1. The only way I can see how to do this correctly is run a script that does that. While running large (1000+ record) summary pages, the summary fields never stop calculating. When the last summary field finishes, the first one starts again. This was not a problem in the past, and we have not changed the calculations. Any Ideas? We have recently converted to FM 5.03 from FM 3-4 and from Server 3 to 5, but this problem seems to have occured before the migration.

I am trying to implement a script that before running will ask for the user to enter their name and password. These entries need to be checked against another table/list and if their entries to not match the ones in the list, the script won't run. If it does match, then it will run. It was suggested to me that I use lookups.. but I am not sure that is the right option, since I am not really wanting to copy the name/password information into the current record.. I just want to make the check before the script runs. ANY HELP

I created a solution in FM 4 and it works great on the mac and win 9x platform. Our school district has moved to the win 2k platform. When I package and deliver the solution to the win2k machines most users have errors, and some don't. The errors range from printing problems to multiple installation. Printing problem-Users that use the initial data file have no problem. Some users that print and had issues now when they try to print they get errors and the fm solution quits. They can take that data file and send it to me and I can print it just fine. Also, once their data file is "corrupt" I can create a new one and it works fine. So I am confused. Also everytime a…

I posted this a few days past in the Scriptmaker section and am still looking for an firm answer. Appreciate your response. The default size of the "Script Definition" window (the window where the script steps are on the right and the commands are on the left when you are editing a script) is rather small. This is a classic many to many relationship problem. A song can be in many books (with a different page number in each) and a book can contain many songs. You will need a "join" file in which a record is a book/song occurrence. This file would contain the page number for the occurrence of a song in a given book. This is much like the classic example of classes and students (a student can be in many classes and classses have many students). Well I am one frustrated puppy... I have a solution based on FM 4.0 v3 running on WIN98. In that solution there is a script step "Open URL" .... this works fine until I bind the solution using SDK v6. When I attempt to run the script (after it is bound), I get an error message saying that the script does not exist. Or script error. What is going on here? Am I doing something wrong? I have made sure that all available "System" (from SDK) files are included in the bound solution. Could you please help?

I have a problem that is driving me crazy. Here's the deal: I have a simple text field on a layout. When I print the layout, the field prints, but without any text (ie the borders are there, but no text). I've tried: 1. changing the font type, color, & size. 2. making sure the "Do not print this object" field was not checked 3. copying the field 4. deleting the field from the database and recreating it Anyone know what's going on?

I am using filemaker unlimited, WSC-IIS conector, Win 2000 server, IIS 5.0. In order for filemaker to publish databases on the web, I have to open the database files for it to work. So if I whant several databases, do I have to open alll of them in ordert to work, or am I not configuring correctly the server. Is this ok!? With filemaker server, I don't hae to open the files, I was expecting the same with the Web Server Conector and FM unlimited. regards, alvaro

I can create a container field in the filemakerpro5 database and link with a paperport documents so that i can open the paperport document by double click the icon in that field. We are running FMP5 in our LAN (Saved in the server and shared for users). The problem is that users cannot open the paperport data concurrently.(e.g. >1 users opening a word2000 document at the same time.) I have try using paperport viewer but it doesn't work with FMP5! Does anyone have solution for me?

Thank you. I have a script which is run upon opening my solution. The solution is password protected with a master password and "No password" for the user, making the password transparent to the user. "User abort off" is the starting script step. Are any Filemaker Pro users aware of a database (commerical, shareware, freeware) for managing Tasks / Projects that allows multiple entries to be input against a list of tasks? I've already developed a basic version using Filemaker Pro 5 (Mac) but before investing more hours into the database, I wondered whether there is something that is pre-existing to do this exact job. (Something similar to the "Tasks" feature of Ms Outlook would be good, only better featured with greater flexibility and the ability to incorporate existing data). Your feedback greatly appreicated. I have set up a script to update my records over an ethernet network from one file to another using the updating records portion of "import records". My problem is that is is intolerably slow. I am attempting to update approx. 2500 records and it progresses at a rate of only about 1 record every 2 seconds. Am I doing something wrong or is this par for the course. Thanks for any help, Mike

I have a client that I am providing some basic computer technical assistance who is using filemaker 3.05 on an imac with os 8.6 and an HP printer. Since I do not really know FM, I thought I would pose these questions on this forum. Everytime other time they print the program and/or system crashes. I've seen several posts concerning the scroll wheel mouse, but now I can't find them. Anyway, I was doing some experimenting and found out some of the behaviors of a scroll wheel mouse with FileMaker. First, other than manually going into the mouse software setup and deisabling the wheel, you can't disable it in FileMaker, however most you probably already know that. If a layout is set to View and Form, the wheel toggles through the records in the file. If it is set to View as List or View as Table, the wheel scrolls up and down the display, similar to the behavior on most other programs, but does not change the current record. We have 22 stations using FMPro 5.0/Server ranging from G4's to 7100's. Most are using OS 9.1, some 9.04. On one 7200/180 using OS 9.04, it will not recognise certain fonts. It has no problem with the fonts in other applications (Word 2001), screen or printing. I have re-installed FMpro, trashed the FMPro font prefs, re-installed all fonts...but no change. I have no problems with any other station in the office. The FMPro database is stored on a network server. Please help!!null

Hi All--- I am currently working on tons of reports in FileMaker 5.0. Although they look good to print for the clients, some have requested them emailed to them. However, they do not have FileMaker..... I have heard of a software that will be able to convert reports in FileMaker to .PDF files for people without FileMaker to view.
