Is there a way to have an IWP database run an automated script that goes out and performs a SQL record import? I have it working fine through FM locally, but am unsure ho wto have the IWP database perfrom this?

The import script step is not web compatible. Through Custom Web Publishing you could do something like this by creating new records for whatever record set you have in the SQL found set. But not through IWP...
