I saw some discussion on this but didn't see a definitive answer.

Can the black line at the left hand edge of the slected record be eliminated? It still shows if the staus area is hidden.

The only way you can eliminate the black line at the left of the record is to switch to form view. The black line indicates the selected record while in list view.

When the status area is showing, 3 pixels are taken from the status area. When the status area is hidden, the pixels are stolen from your viewable screen real estate. Interesting difference that will cause graphics to shift when switching from layout to layout if you haven't taken this into account.
