I need to do the same thing - display graphics from a related file, via a portal. Did you ever get any answers?

I have no experience with this, however, I would suggest that if you are not getting the results using portals, try using the InlineAction tags to access the related db file.

IMHO better is to look the other way. Switch to db, which now is in portal, and display that.

Or the Inline can be used as well.
