Scrolling fields not displayed in browser?

Featured Replies

Fields that are defined as 'scrolling' do not show with a scrollbar in the webbrowser, even if the field contains enough data to justify a scroll bar. In Edit-mode the scroll bar does appear (even if the field is not formatted as 'display vertical scroll bar' in Filemaker .

Is this correct or am I missing something? If correct, is there a way to make the field auto-size to its content (in the browser)?

(I know, I know, Custom offers more control on formatting. But Instant is soooo close to being really useful... I just can't understand why they left out some very obvious things.)

Earlier somebody posted that increasing the size of the fields on the layout (in FMP) making them just aa bit bigger than the default 1 line made scroll bars appear on the web page in Instant.

It's worth mentioning here that Instant (and Custom) is limited by the coinstraints of HTML formating. HTML only offers text fields, which are single row, or text areas which havea a scroll bar. FMP and other prograams might offer fancier field and layout features, but they cannot be displayed on the web because there is no HTML equivilent. It's not FMP's fault...

The tip to enlarge the 1-line field to make the scroll bar appear, works only in edit-mode. In 'view' mode you still see only as much data as the field size allows for.

I agree that there are HTML limitations to scrolling fields (a.o.). But there are of course various ways to allow for dynamically sizing to the amount of text. E.g. table cells or plain paragraphs. Or even within the current methodology Instant uses to translate FM layouts to web-pages, they could have included an option to make the field resize to enclose its content.

I find it hard to believe that FileMaker did not provide in a way to display data that exceeds the field boundaries.

Yes but if it isn't supported by web browsers' HTML rendering they won't work!

I've found a trick for 'scrolling fields' in view mode: place your (non-scrolling) field in a portal (with some dummy relationship) showing 1 record and vertical scroll bar. Make your field as large a needed to have all content displayed. Only the portion covered by the portal will be visible. But the portal will have a scroll bar that allows you to scroll through the field.
