Pro V unlimmited and IIS

Greetings,

I am having to move my FMpro 5 unlimmited (and databases) over to a windows server running IIS. At the moment I have FM running web-companion which works with the CDML fine.

The new server is multi-homed and I will be given a new IP for the CDML site. Can I run FM Pro 5 Unlimmited alongside IIS, or will there be issues about web-companion interfering with IIS?

Any advice gratefully accepted.

FMI recommends that you do not do this. There is also a huge security hole in this process.

Keep the databases and FMPU on one machine, with IIS on another.

Old Advance Man

We are running that for 3 years without problems or collisions.

IIS on NT4 on port 80.

FMU 5 on port 591.

You can use Web Server Connector to map WC to IIS on port 80.

RE: There is also a huge security hole in this process.

That is the build in hole by FMI in size of Silicon Valley in WebCompanion. We are currently looking for ways how to close that.

Nope. What I was referring to with the security hole dealt with IIS, not with the Web Companion.

Old Advance Man

IIS has more holes than universe, but if you are running just the IIS and not Microsoft ASP and such stuff and all patches it is different product. Even banks are using that.

Compared with that the FM NON EXISTENT security is much much worse.

I strongly recommend using Old Advance Man’s advise. Keep FMPro Unlimited and ISS on separate machine. Also, make sure the machine you have FMPro Unlimted is Win 2K Pro not Win 2K Server. There seems to be a problem running FMPro Unlimted on Win 2K Server. I tried it and the web companion crashed every few hours.

Everything has problem with W2K server. Especially W2K server.

BTW did you used the latest patches for Unlimited?

We are running IIS and WebCompanion on single obsolete HW for 3 years without any problems whatsoever. It must be tuned up machine with NT server system. We do host approximately 20 companies.

I have had little or no problems running FM5 or 5.5 Unlimited with IIS 5 and Windows 2000 Server.

I am curious about one thing - if you were to run FM Unlimited/Web companion website (accessed by more than 10 users) on Windows 2000 Professional would you be violating the 10 user connection referred to in Microsoft documentation for Windows 2000 Professional IIS and file-sharing connections?

Interesting question!

As MS OS is not serving the visitors, but FM Unlimited with own Web server, I believe it will not breach the MS license.

NT server for 5 users is also serving via IIS unlimited number of visitors.
