I just bought 9 advanced and wanted to try my had at IWP for the first time. So I grabbed a database, opened it and followed the instructions on the FMP help to set it up. I went under sharing, selected Instant Web Publishing and set it up as it said.

I then opened System Preferences on my Mac, clicked on Network and got the IP Address from the TCP/IP button.

I then opened Foxfire, put in the IP address and I get the page "Unable to Connect". I tried other browsers and get the same thing. Do you know what I'm doing wrong?

Have you enabled "Personal Web Sharing" in the system preferences?

If so then you must change the port settings in the IWP settings in FMP to a different (not port 80, as Apache has that as default) port. Typically we all use port 591 as this is reserved by FMI.

You should then connect under:

IPAddress:591

Hi IdeaData,

I turned on my Personal Web Sharing in system preferences (it was off). I tried to change the port from 80 to 591 and I get the dialog box “FileMaker cannot share files over the Web because of a port numbering conflict. Please configure web publishing to use a different port.”

So 591 does not work and 80 doesn't either.

When I asked if you had turned on web sharing it did not imply you had to do so. (it's not necessary for IWP to work)

However this is an improved position because it indicates that FMP is trying to start web publishing, but is conflicting with an already enabled service (presumably from personal web sharing).

But have you got another copy of FMP already running on your machine - you claim to be running FMDev 7 on OS X 10.2, but that's impossible as FMP 9 requires 10.4.8

To switch the IWP port. Follow this in FMP9A...

File > Sharing > Instant Web Publishing > Advanced Options

The default setting is port 80

I have FMP 9 Advanced and am running Mac OSX Tiger 10.4.10.

I’ve gone to File > Sharing > Instant Web Publishing.

I turned IWP ON, status is English, my file is showing in the Currently open files window and when I click on it, “All users” is shown in the pick list. And don’t display in instant Web Publishing homepage is unchecked.

When I click on Advanced Options: Specify, I get the options dialog and where it says TCP/IP Port Number: it says 80. I type in 591. Under logging options: Script errors, web publishing errors and we activity are checked and Disconnect inactive accounts is 15 minutes. I click OK and close this window click OK on the IWP window.

I then open my browser enter 591 and click enter but do not get my page. If I enter my IP address followed by /591, still nothing. However, when I go back to File > Sharing > Instant Web Publishing and click the Advanced Options button TCP/IP Port Number: it still says 80. I’ve tried changing it a number of times but it remains at 80 each time I go back.

What you have said and everything I’ve read are the same thing, but IWP fails to work. I hope from the above you can see what I’ve failed to do.

"I type in 591... I click OK and close this window click OK on the IWP window."

You probably need to quit FileMaker Pro and restart it for the port change to take effect.

In your bowser you specify the port 591 by entering ":591" after the IP number or domain name, like this:

www.fmforums.com:591/whatever...

Vaughan, that was it!

I didn't know I had to quit FileMaker. It was funny because I quit FileMaker and when I opened it again a dialog box came up saying I needed to change the port number. So I typed in 591 opened my browser and typed in what you said and that was it.

Maybe you wouldn't mind answering another question for me. We expect up to 200 simultaneous users to our FileMaker web site who will select generally 3 to 5 subjects (out of maybe 175) to read and then vote Yes or No on the ones they selected. We have been thinking about using someone like dbdom to host our site. Most people using our site will not have a copy FileMaker. I'm not sure I understand things well enough to know if we're going to have a problem or not.

"We have been thinking about using someone ... to host our site"

Whoever hosts the site needs to be running FileMaker Server Advanced and have it set up for IWP or CWP. You cannot use a "normal" web site hosting company.

Scroll to the bottom of this web page for some hosting companies.

Thank you so much for your help, I'm starting to understand this a little better thanks to you. A couple more questions if I may.

Now that I’ve enabled IWP is it standard operating procedure for the “Change Port” dialog to come up every time that FileMaker is opened?

I’ve read the “FM9_Instant_Web_Publish_en.pdf” and it’s been very helpful and I was surprised to find that I even understood most of it. I of course noticed very quickly what looks great on my FileMaker layout changes a bit in IWP. But the same is true going from Mac to PC so I guess that’s to be expected.

One thing I’m a little curious about. In FileMaker I have a portal on my Customer layout where I click a given Customer, the Customer name is highlighted and the customer information is shown. If I click XYZ Company and close the file. When I re-open the file, XYZ Company is still highlighted in the portal and that company information is still showing.

This is not true of IWP when I close and come back. With IWP a different company is highlighted and different company information is shown. Not the company I had selected when I closed the web page and not the company shown as highlighted in the portal either. This would have to be very confusing for someone new especially. Is this standard for IWP and if so, is there a way around it?

Your computer probably already has a web server running on port 80, which FMP wants to use.

Check your OS sharing options and turn off personal web sharing.

May I ask a question regarding publishing in the web with FM9?

I have managed without problem to publish a file on my computer using Firefox, but I am not able to publish any file to outside, I mean another computer different from mine.

Currently I am using a free wifi network, at home, I do not know if this is the cause. But I also tried to do the same in the office using a normal cable network, but the same no success.

I have followed every step mentioned in various manuals, but nothing.

Could you please help me?

Regards and thanks,

Hi Guys,

A new problem has come up. I open my browser and put in the address and IWP comes up (I have two files Interface and Data) and it shows the Data file only.

Before it’s always shown both files and I’d click the Interface file and it worked fine. So I went back to the IWP dialog box and clicked on my Interface file under “Current open files” and clicked OK. I opened my browser again, entered the address and the same thing happened, it shows the Data file only.

I even closed the FileMaker application and started all over again. But with the same result, the Data file only.

Do you know what’s causing this and what I can do to fix it?

Thanks guys,

James

Apart from enabling IWP you must also ensure:

1. The file is marked to be shown in the IWP hoome page

2. The user privileges also have fmiwp enabled
