In IWP the Script step "Sort" is not compatible when using a dialog box - so you must have a preset sort for it to work.

Strangely the status panel offers a sort records WITH A DIALOG, however I want to hide the status panel from all users, but still provide a dialog driven sort option.

When I looked further the status panel sort button is executing a java script - top.iwp.openSortDlog().

Does any one know how to execute this script from a button on the IWP layout?

Not sure, but might there be something here?:)
