When I select IWP and turn it on, what looks like a generic IP address shows up as 10.0.1.2 shows up. Shouldn't the IP address come up as the external IP address of my computer determined by going to whatismyip.com?

I used the advanced option button to specify my external IP, but

when I try to test to see if the database is accessible on my Windows XP PC, the IE7 browser indicates page not found on both the 10.0.1.2 IP address and my external address.

Any help would be appreciated.

There are 2 possible points here.

1. If you have the OS X web server enabled then port 80 will already be allocated. Conventionally most of us use port 591 for IWP as this is the FMP assigned port.

2. You can use "local" as a substitute for your machine's allocated IP address.

There are 2 IP addresses in play here; the external IP that whatsmyip (ipchicken.com is quicker and more fun to remember :-) shows, but that needs to be mapped to an internal address (the IWP published address) in order for it to be seen through the NAT (Network Address Translation) firewall. On the external IP, Port 591 is a Filemaker registered port, so you should not have any conflicts on the web. Internally, it does not matter what non-conflicting port you use, as long as your router knows the mapping between the external and internal IP and port.
