FileMaker Server General Discussions

  1. I will be setting up a Filemaker Server that will be used with local clients as well as Remote clients. There are about 15 local clients. The Remote clients will be accessing the databases using a IP number. There will be about 6 remote clients. The site that is hosting the files has a DSL Line that runs at about 384kbps for upload. We may have to stay with that line speed because of location. Currently the computer that is running the server is a Macintosh 400mhz G4 with 192kb memory running OS 9.2.2 and Virtual memory is turned Off. Filemaker Server is the only active application that this computer is running. Filemaker Server has been allocated 40mb of memory and 40m…

  3. We are upgrading 2 of our FMServers. If we give the new servers a different name then our old servers, how does FMP deal with that? Will it automatically link files up with the new name when we bring the databases online? I first thought was that it would not deal with it nicely but I wanted to confirm. If we need to, we can give the new server the same name as the old. It would be much nicer if we can give it a new name. Thanks for any input you can offer. Thanks, John

  5. I downloaded the Trial version of the FM Server. I hosted two relational FMDB and had them "served up" by starting the server on Mac 10.2.6. We used the DB from a remote location by specifying a host, opening the DB and entered data. Seemed to work fine for 2 days. Then I went to the server computer, opened the DB and it said file was damaged, use recover. When I recovered, the last 2 days of data were missing. What's up? I'm getting a bad feeling about converting to FM Server. Why not just keep hosting without it? Thank you! Help.

  6. Hello all, I have gotten a password font to mask the password field of my login process. However, I have both Mac and PC clients and I've found that I need to install the font on all computers for the password to be properly hidden. The problem arises when the font is not found, the font default to a readable set. Is there a way to either embed the font in the fp5 file or to have FM server serve the font with the fp5 file? I know the serving is possible with plug-ins, but what about additional supporting files? Thanks for discussion. damyena

  7. I am running FM Server 5.0 on a PII, NT Server. The clients on the LAN are G3/G4 iMac's. Every now and then I take a copy the database with me on my laptop (PIII, WINXP) and use it . I have notice the performance is slower on my laptop than on the LAN. The biggest difference is I don't use FM Server on my laptop, but it seems like the laptop should still have better performance. I have also tried it on a P4 and PowerBook G4, both slower than the LAN. Is this normal, should I be concerned? Are there any good benchmark tools I can test my database on?

  8. Running FMServer 5.5 on Windows 2000 server on a couple of very specific instances I ALWAYS get a server crash. Just curious if anyone else experiences these and knows why. When I spoke to FM on both of these items, they suggested I run FM server on a Win2000 Pro machine stand-alone. Funny thing, when I moved the dbase to a Win2000 Pro machine and ran it stand-alone, the same thing happened. (I subsequently moved back to the server for file management purposes.) 1) Importing data into a file from a DBF, XLS, etc. if there are other folks in the file. This one is easy enough to work around by writing a script checking for other users in this file... Still i…

  11. I've recently changed from OS9 to OSX for my FM Server. I've had nothing but headaches. 1. (I'm just wyning here) How to get into the remote admin is not clear, the manual did not help. 2. (Real problem) Of the 60 or so databases regularly hosted, one always becomes un-hosted for some unknown reason. At least once a day I get call from someone trying to use it, and find its gone offline. 3. (Yet another real problem) I am using 5.5v1. These are both running in on the same machine. I obviously want to improve my stability and at the moment I only have one more extra machine to spare. (2 in total) How can improve my stability and perfomance running FileMaker to host my CDML, databases, and cgi-scripts. Here is what I am thinking. Have FileMaker Pro, open the databases remotely running on a second machine runnig FM Server. Then have the other machine to run the CDML and Apacher Server. Thanks.

  16. Hello everyone, I am looking for non-bias recomendations for a FM Server. Is it more stable to be running under Windows 2000 or Mac OS X? At a previous client's location we setup 2 FM servers 1-Mac solution and 1-Windows 2000 solution. The windows 2000 server ran flawlessly while the mac repeatedly had problems. I personally am leaning towards another windows 2000 server but I wanted the feedback on anyone who has experience with both and can offer an non-bias opinion. No mac vs win wars please. Filemaker Server does this easily on OS 9. In my opinion also, it seems reasonable to think that a script could be written as a "work-around" to mount the Xserve, copy the files (to be backed up) across the network, then unmount the Xserve. The problem is that you cannot copy/backup the databases while Filemaker Server is open or else major corruption is likely. Secondly Filemaker Server 5.5 is not Ap…

  22. Hi all, I have a Filemaker Server running on MacOS X 10.2.6 and I experience some strange problems when using more than one client. For example: every client gets his own record when loggin in to a database. So when a user logs in to accounts receivable, he or she gets one record. The strange thing here is that when a second user logs in, the screen of the first user will refresh and he will see the record of the second user. I was told that each user get's and keeps his own found set, but i give a "go to related record:show only related" script command to give the user only his records. 23. Running FM6 on Windows against FMServer 5.5. Hope this is the correct forum to post this question. Even though at first glance this may appear to be an ODBC question, it's just mentioned to explain the setup. In attempt to reduce the ODBC reporting burden for the FMserver users we created a separate storage location where the last-night backup from our production files is being copied to. The problem is this: The few users who have access to the reporting backup files open this data-set every now and then to run some reports through ODBC connections, so far so good. After they close these files and connect to the FMServer production databases, the client op…

  24. What is a server backup doing, regarding the following: - does it save a data base in a consistent state? - is it possible to restore a backup? How and where to? - is a data base consistent between backups, eg after a cache flush command? - are backups done by simple copying, while FMS is up, unreliable? - what happens to connected guests during a backup, perhaps even having running scripts and the like? what happens to backups scheduled as scripts are running? Where does FMI says something about this, in docs or so? O'course I was looking for this but unfinding it, before post. (I did not search across forums. pointers to them would be answers.) Peter

  28. Hey! We are ready to get users on board with the db's I've written for the office. I currently am on FM5 (MAC) but we will upgrade to either 5.5 or 6 when we purchase the packs for the other machines. There will be 3 heavy users on a total of 10 files. There will be 9 users who randomly "pop on" a read only screen that they will be directed to by their password. Do we need FM Server to do this? Is it strictly a degradation issue, or are there other dangers (stablility, backups, etc.)? Thanks so much!

  32. Anyone ever figure out why FM Server 5.5 on OS X does not back up files sometimes? We have a dedicated dual G4 running FM Server for users. I have also set up a redundant server that is a kind of lab, to do testing before releasing updates. It sits byself in it's own little network (just connected to one other computer via CAT-5 cable). Anywho ... the lab set up is exactly the same except it's a single G4 tower. They are both supposed to be backing up files to a fire-wire hard drive and various intervals. At the same time, we have a machine that gets used to run a series of daily scripts involving FM client, and would like to move the server onto that same machine (G4 dual 500). We have noticed under 9 that running the server and the client on the same machine leads to *huge* slow down that makes the server nearly unusable. Is this true for OSX as well? Would a dual 500 have enough muscle to run these both at the same time, or should we bump up to something more powerful? How do you backup your files ? I have scheduled 4 backups every day. Backups 1 and 3 are made on directory A. Backups 2 and 4 are made on directory B. A and B reside on different drives on the same machine. Sometimes (1 or 2 times a week) I copy dir. A into an archive of dated backups. Is this a good backup policy?

  60. Hi FM-Workers, In a networked system (20 users with a FM v6 application with FM-server v5, in a all Mac configuration) the users want to select the appropriate library for spelling checking. Once set, the user is returned to the root when he wants to select another language. How can I set the filepath of the Select Library function in such a way that the path is remembered after reopening of the application? Are these settings stored in the Host' or in the Clients system (my logic says it must be in the clients-!)? Thnx, hope you can help! Paul

  64. Recently we've upgrade our FMServer from 3 to 5.5. The system it's running on is a W2000 SP3, 500MHz, 320MB RAM, local RAID5 storage, dual LAN connection. Hosting 18 db files of together around 250MB for an average 20 users. Since the upgrade the overall system performance is really bad compared to the old FM3. Most insert and updates now take a couple of seconds where it used to be 'instant'. Sometimes FM even seems to hang for 10-20 seconds before an update is accepted. We've already played with various settings and monitoring numerous system counters we have notices that the server is 'eating' through it's system cache. FM is configured with a fixed 20MB …

Hello Everyone... My boss is convinced that we are experiencing data loss in our Point Of Sale database. Every so often we can't find a record, we have a paper copy of this record, but it is no longer in our database. The database is setup so every script that is executed in the database is logged (activity watcher) So if i create and invoice it will say in the log that I created it and the invoice #. When we look in the log for the invoice that no longer exists in our system, we can't find even the creation of the record. We are running OS X.2.4 with FM Server 5.5v2? 69. We've recently installed FM Server 5.5 on a Windows NT4 server. I'm needing to clear my application event log just about monthly because of tons of messages being written by FM. Most of them are not what I would consider 'Event worthy': - User "yyyyy" [xxx.0.1.251] closing a connection. - Pausing all writes to file "zzzz.FP5", now safe to back up this file. I've looked, but cannot find any way to have FM stop sending these messages to the log, but I'm sure there is a way. Before you go there, we're in an FDA regulated environment, so changing the Event Log settings to do things like overwriting old messages is not an option. Thanks, Mike

Problem is that we have many damaged, recovered databses in use with Filemaker server 5.5. And server can't keep host connection alive.. Sometimes client software says says that file is damged, even if the file is opened on other client and is working fine on another client at the same time.... So, if filemaker database is damaged should I use recovered file or clean copy of database populated with recovered data? Is there any differenties with these methods?

As I posted yesterday, our FM Server 5.5 (PPC, OS 8.6) is showing strange information in the Administration window, namely that some guests are showing connect times of 45 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes, even though I know definitely the longest they could be connected is about 5 days (due to a server disconnect for maintenance.) This anomaly first appeared yesterday. Today the information is still the same for those 4 machines (although Idle Time updates correctly across the board.) As I wrote yesterday, the server has been up (without a reboot) for around 200 days now. I am loathe to reboot, as I'd like to see what happens. Can it be possible that nobody has seen this kind …

Apparently you can either set your databases for 'multi-user' OR set the server to work with 'single user databases' - is the only key advantage here that YOU can better set individual prefs via the individual databases? 2. 82. I've got FM Server 5.5 running on a G3 with OS 8.6 and the thing has been up an running about 200 days straight without a hitch. Today I came in and five of the 14 guests show connection times of 45 days 0 hours 0 minutes. This is incorrect - these machines have been running a day or two each, tops. Also, as the day has progressed, the numbers haven't changed. All the other guests are showing correct information, and it is all changing just as it ought to. Has anyone ever seen this? Am I looking at an impending crash? The machines in question are a mixed bunch - an iMac, a G3, a couple of PCs - so I think this is on the server side. Thanks in advance Stanley

  83. (FileMaker Server 5.5 running on a dedicated Xserve under 10.2.) My server has started doing a strange thing. Every now and then, maybe every other day or so, it contacts the users and says that it is requesting them to close the file(s) they are currently using. It is a similar message to what you get when you attempt to shut down a file while it is being shared. The thing is that the server is not being restarted, and no tracks are left in the logs. Once you log out, you can log right back on. Does anyone have a clue?

This db system has been running (with upgrades) for 9+ years and this never happened prior to OSX. Previously, when a change was made, the link would have to be re-established …

Previously this was used by one or two secretaries, but now that we have FileMaker Server we would like teachers to be able to look up student addresses if needed. The catch is that we only want teachers to be able to see addresses for students in their own classes. FileMaker Server seems to have nothing built into it for permissions, and the permissions built into FileMaker don't seem appropriate for this either. It was suggested that we may need to make a form for each and every teacher and write FileMaker scripting that limits teachers to seeing their own form, but this seems like a long backw…

  100. I know this has been often discussed here but I am having major disagreements with our hardware/networking wonks on how best to deployed FileMaker Server and a variety of other apps in our organization. The trend here is to spec big hulking servers with 2, 2 Ghz processors, 1 gig RAM, 6 Raid HD's, etc., etc., etc. They want to deploy all database servers on this single, $5000+ box. I argue that FileMaker, as well as the other database server apps, want a dedicated, lean, properly scaled box to run on. One particularly sallent (IMHO) reason I offer, is that a failure of this 1 big box (no matter how remote the possibility), would bring all these processes to a halt. This w…
