    I am trying to populate a pop up menu from a field but the order in which it appears in the pop up list is alphabetical. I just want it to appear how I typed it in the field in the first place. So I have 2 questions: 1. How do I get this list to appear in the order in which I typed it? 2. What I would really like to do is enter a list of items into a global field and have that list be a pop up menu. The problem is that a global field cannot be a value list. Does anyone know of a way to accomplish this or something like this?     Whatever I am doing, I do not get as hardcopy what I am seeing on the screen in the preview mode. Nothing like scaling and the like helps. When the printer has finished its work, the "format" on the screen has changed, i.e. becoming smaller or bigger. No such problems with FM5. The other day, we had an update on the virus scanning software and I have updated Adobe reader from version 5 to 6 but no other changes have been made to any software or any driver. Could the virus scan software cause such problems??

    I am unable to save printer settings iro paper format. There's no mistake with the printer drivers, as I am using various different printers - including FreePDF. I do need European A4 format, however, FM is always going back to US letter format, even when "saving" the settings I do need in a script. How comes? How can it be assured, A4 is the primary choice?

  4. I am using FMP 7 on a Windows XP Pro box. I have a database of about 125 records, one table, and about 300 fields in that table. One of the fields is a container field into which I have been dragging PDF files from a Folder. I closed the Database, and then reopened it and the PDFs were not available any more. IE. WHen I tried to double click on them, they did not open Acrobat Viewer. I put another 15 PDFs into the DB using the exact same method. Dragging PDF files from a folder. These files (after closing and opening the DB several times) are available, upon double click, they bring up Acrobat Viewer. The size of the database indicates that the PDF…

    I've converted my 10-table database from Access95 to FM7 (on Mac), copied all the data into identical tables, replicated all the reports, panels etc etc. (Took me almost two months to complete). It worked for a couple of days, after lots of testing and comparisons with Access results. Now, nothing. I open the database, it goes to main panel, which has several buttons to invoke various reports and other layouts (data entry etc). But, now, none of the buttons responds, nothing happens when I click on them. I close the database, start over, same problem. If I go to the Scripts menu and select a script to take me to another panel or layout, no response. What's going on??…

  6. the database has 6 fields and i want to print 3 fields on 1 label and 3 fields on the label in the next column for a total of 4 label columns per page. i can browse the layout the way i want it to print, as a list, but it only prints from the 1st and 3rd columns. i think the problem is in the way i am setting up the layout mode. I am trying to re-organize slide information in filemakerpro7 and print info on 2 labels per slide, 3 fields on each label for a total of 6 fields per slide. any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I'm at a new job, and my boss just upgraded to FMP 7. He's been using earilier versions, and is getting used to the new version, while I've never even used a database before. I need to find information on container files, OLE embedding, and linking for him.     Hi, Its me again! I am quite new to filemaker pro and I am not sure what its capable of and what it isnt! Anyway, question is: I have two tables. one with People ID, names and address and two with People ID and status. The two tables are related through ID. I want to Find records in Table one(i.e. ID, name and address) with a condition on status(say status = employee) from the Table two. Is it possible to "Constraint Find"?     I've got a custom dialog box that appears and asks the user to enter a date. It then stores this date in a global field inside my globals table. The problem is, half the time, it fails to update the global field, so the script elements that follow don't work properly. (and the annoying part is that half the time, it actually DOES properly update the global field.) Has anyone else had this issue, and is there a workaround, or is it something I'm doing incorrectly. I was doing a list of my books using Microsoft Excel, because I like this software for entering large amounts of data, but I now moved to FM7 because it's a real database program, not a Spreadsheet. But I miss a very useful characteristic from Excel: When you are filling a new record, the program Autofills that I write with the data of all the other records (the data of this concrete field).     I understand if FileMaker is too lazy support PostScript fonts, even though it's really the only program I've ever seen in my life that won't support them, and even though it means that hundreds of dollars worth of fonts are now worthless. That's fine. But I've inserted an EPS into a print layout, and when I print it shrinks the size of the EPS, no matter what size it was before I inserted it. Needless to say, this is frustrating. In my v6 version of my client manager, I could insert company logos into my invoice layouts, etc. Is that chapter of my life now closed? You should not lose core features when buying an upgrade.

    Hi, I have a main layout with different buttons say- General Info, and Address. I have two other layouts with the "general Info" and "address" respectively. When I click on either button on the main layout, I do not want to skip to the appropriate layout. This is what I am currently doing. I have a group of four computers which are connected together as a basic intranet, no network server, just an apple airport extreme and sharing of files between the computers. Unfortunately money prohibits too much else. Now I have File Maker Pro 7 and need to allow users access to the databases which are being held on computer A. Luckily I managed to solve the others but am just stuck on this issue.     I've been having a problem with printing a record from a web browser. I want users to be able to access my database, and to be able to print out forms that are horizontally oriented (landscape view). I'de like to make it as simple for the user as possible. Right now the default page set up for printing is the vertical orientation.     Hey all, I've been wondering why FMP7 added accounts without also adding 'account specific global variables'. In other words, why don't users have their own scratch space? It seems that all the multi-user woes are intact... using 'lock scripts' and the like. But by adding non-global scratch fields to an "accounts" table (containing all the active accounts), shouldn't I be able to make a relationship where "get(accountname)=accounts::accountname" and thus access temp records from a particular user? "Export field contents" works fine within a loop, but it overwrites one and the same file over an over again.     I have noticed in FMP7 that creating a script doesn't seem to be an automatic action. In previous versions, once the root actions have been performed (i.e., page setup, sort, find, etc.) using Scriptmaker to set up a script would establish the necessary script steps to repeat the desired script. Not so in FMP7. Nothing seems to be recorded when creating a new script and I can't find the requisite actions in the scripting menu. Am I missing something or has Filemaker, Inc. left something out?

    In a database I have a bunch of records about people, and each person is designated by a unique ID code. There are multiple records for each person, though (each record represents one person for a particular year).   41. I have a database in which I am trying to summarize and analyze data. Here is what I'd like to do if I could figure out how to do it: I have four specific symptoms (leg pain, ulcer, gangrene, ischemia) that require the same surgical procedure. I have a hundred or so patients with one of these symptoms. I want the database to count how many occurences of each symptom appear. I would like a layout with a table that says: leg pain - 25, ulcer - 17, gangrene - 22, ischemia - 28. Or something like that. This is one of many fields that I'd like summarized similarly.     I converted a FMP database which consisted of more than 10 files, from version 5.5 to 7.0. The conversion created a lot of problems and issues. One of the problems is that a field (in file : use a popup list that is designed to use an external value list in a relational file (file A) that shows related values only. This value list (in file : works fine in the Browse mode, but does not show any value in Find mode. I didn't have this problem when the files were in version 5.5. Has anyone seen this problem before? Do you know how to resolve it? Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks!

    As much as I like the "ScriptMaker" interface, I was wondering is there any way to edit the scripts in filemaker with a text editor. It is easy to make sweeping changes when using a text based method. (e.g. Set Field on 10 fields when copying data from one table to another.)

    What's the best/most efficient means of finding the next highest number (i.e., highest existing value + 1) in a DB for which not all records have a value in the given field (which I'll call #Fld)? i.e., this is not a serial number; Of thousands of records, only a few dozen will have a number assigned in #Fld.   52. I've created a DB for our school that stores student files. In order to keep the DB as streamlined as possible, I've stored the various student files as references. Here's the problem: the folder that contains the actual files is a shared folder on a network. When users log onto the DB I've created, and try to open the referenced file, they get a 'file not found error.' The only work around I've found is to tell the users to make sure they've logged onto the network and made a connection to the folder in question.     I created a FileMaker solution for tracking and scheduling of jobs to equipment. It works well. However, the company recently purchased an SQL server and a heavy application that creates job tickets, inventory, shipping and data collection. The scheduling portion of it stinks!     Need a lil help here, I am using a button to call a new window (and create a related record) for the user to enter data into, the data entry window has 2 buttons, 1 to save the data and close the window, the other to cancel the data entry (delete the created record) and close the window. I have realised that an errant mouse click will leave the data entry window open but hidden behind the main window, is there a way to keep the focus on the data entry window until the save or cancel buttons are pressed?   60. This USED to work...I could have both FMP6 developer AND FMP7 Developer open.....now I can open one and when I try to launch the other.....the splash screen shows up then it stops. I have deleted the plists, repaired permissions and I even ran cron scripts.....any ideas? Greg

  62. Ok I have two tables, one with courses, which includes course code and descriptions, and one with coursePerSemester, which includes the courses that are recorded for each semester. Then I have a student file. I want to be able to using the semester number, get the course codes, which it does, but also the course names. When I link them, the course codes show up fine, however the full names of the course do not, just the first course code name. Any ideas?

    All of my db experience is with MS Access (a number of years ago). A few weeks ago I downloaded the FM7 demo and I'm trying to decide if it's worth the price. My initial reaction is that FM is lame compared to MS Access but there's a good chance I'm just not familiar enough with FM. Of course, I'm a Mac-only guy now so Access isn't an option. Is FM as powerful as Access? Has anyone else made the transition with success/satisfaction?

I had just used up my complimentary support with FM and they say they dont support command lines or batch files. I basically want to use the scheduler to shutdown FM, run a scheduled backup from my backup exec server and start it first thing in the morning. I'm trying to search a timecard table that includes a timecard number, producer(name) and a date weekending field. My script selects all records, sorts by date/name, then goes into find mode. After typing a name to search for, it displays the results. The problem is, that the results will only be displayed in ascending timecard number order.     I have a find mode problem. I have created a database to store collectors cards. If the user clicks on the find button it will bring them to a find layout and I run a script for them to do their search. The problem I am running into is I want the search for one field to be constrained only to what they pick. Example I have a field called series and I have a drop down menu so they can pick the series. The user can also add a series that is not in the database. The customer would be able to close one with the "Exit Application" script easily without affecting the other. Customer could switch between them with ALT-TAB easily.   83. Hey all, I'm trying to do something very simple, but can't figure it out from the documentation. In a project folder, I have a FM db and a folder containing images. The db fields includes "image" (a container) and "image_path" (text). The images were imported as references. When I copy the project folder over to another computer, it breaks, naturally, because the stored reference path changes from "file://Drive 1/etc/project/images/picture.tiff" to "file://Drive 2/etc2/project/images/picture.tiff".     I am trying to make a field automatically extend to the next page in Preview Mode if there is text in the field that is too long to display on one page. I have tried selecting "Allow part to break across page boundaries" option in the "Part Setup..." window, but that doesn't work.   90. My spreadsheet report is visible in Browse and Preview modes. When I try to print this report only half the page prints in landscape. When I check my print preview only half the spreadsheet is visible. If I go to page set up and select landscape to print the portal expands in Layout mode to include all the data I need to print. When I then go back to print preview only half the records show up and this is how it prints. This never happened in version 6. Help! does anyone know how I can print my report?

    Hi guys, To back up fmserver we have found that we have to use the command "fmserver pause" before the backup will commence. Once backup is finished we then have to use the command "fmserver resume". How do you guys manage your backups? If a user clicks the Cancel button in the Status area during a scripted Find (paused), is there any way to have the script take him to a different/specific layout instead of dumping him in an inappropriate place? (And yes, I want to keep the Status area "live" in this situation.) This script traverses two diff layouts, and the problem arises if the user cancels on the 2d one--which has only merge fields and no navigation options (other than a "cancel everything, go home, and start over" button).     All I want to be able to do is to import/export simple chemical formula - which involves the use of super/subscripts. Filemaker appears to not be in the mood to play nice. If I take a set of test formula and export using the xml option, all super/subscript information is lost. Then again, I already have a field where the formula are formatted using HTML (useful when generating web pages).     I'm a newbie using trial version to see if I can replace Paradox. I'm creating a complex directory which includes several fields which are empty for some records. If the field is empty, I want to hide the field name (which seems to end up as just text on the layout, rather than attached to the field itself). I thought "slide" would work but it just controls what is in the field boundry. Anybody know how to do this? an example would be "Business Tel" followed by the Btel field.
