Do I need a static IP?

Featured Replies

I can't seem to get IPW working. Although MY IP address does not change, in the router I do not have an IP address in the Static IP field.

Is this my problem?

...Probably? Try going to www.whatismyip.com and try that one.

Also make sure you have configured your router to forward traffic on port 80 (or whatever port you use for IWP) to the IP address of your web server.

Hold on... what do you mean 'web server' I'm using the IP my ISP provides, is this not correct?

Basically - what i take wim to mean is - just make sure that you have enabled port forwarding / opened port 80 on your router.

Well, you doing Instant [color:red]Web Publishing, so there is a web server involved.

If you do IWP from FileMaker Pro then you're using the mini web server that is built into FMP and the router should forward web traffic to your FMP machine.

If you're using FileMaker Server Advanced, then there is real web server that is either on the same machine as FMSA or on another machine depending on how you set it up. The router needs to forwared web traffic to the machine where your web server is on.

Thanks for you help, but it is working! However, I cannot access the database myself from within my network by using the external IP - I have to use the internal IP. I emailed a friend to ask if he could see the database using the external IP and he could.

Strange how I cannot use the external lP address. I would like to use it to check things are working.

Think about what your saying - your sending a request outwards onto the world wide web from ip 211.211.211.19 to try and reach ip 211.211.211.19 - where do you think it will go? If you want to access it internally, use the local ip address of your webserver.
