June 20, 200124 yr Newbies Does FM Server 5 need to be installed on a server version of the OS to allow unlimited access to the databases using Web Companion? What about multiple users accessing via FM client? I'm asking these questions because our systems were originally setup using the server versions of Win2k. From what I can tell I see no need or even a benefit for using the server version of the OS for FM Server 5.
June 20, 200124 yr I think it will change a bit in server 5.5. Theoretically FM 5 server will run on NT workstation as well. Unlimited is just client apps. so no server necessary.
June 20, 200124 yr Your right, depending on the application. In many of my smaller solutions I use a beefed up work station running Windows 2K Professional or NT Workstation 4 with FM Server. Works just wonderfully, especially if the already have an existing network server. I just dump to that server on a schedule for backups. In larger installations system critical other issues like mirrored drives, etc come into play. Then there are obvious benefits to the server version of the OS.

What about multiple users accessing via FM client? To allow Unlimited access to your databases you need FMPro Unlimited. If you are going to allow Web and LAN clients access the same databases you will have to Host the databases on an FMPro Server and open the DB through Hosts in FMPro Unlimited as you normally do for a client program......FMPro Unlimited is just a client version of FMPro with the IP restriction removed and should be used as such. I would recommend creating web specific layout(s) on your databases so you can remove things like drop down lists, check boxes etc. This sort of layout item is much more easily done with HTML popup lists, radios etc etc...... As far as what works on what Win OS the guys above are the ones to ask (I would recommend a Mac RAIC personally ) [ June 21, 2001: Message edited by: scratchmalogicalwax ]
