Please Help: Secure Server

Featured Replies

Hi everyone.

I want to create a secure server. I'm using FileMaker's Web Companion on port 968, opposed to the default setting of port 80. I have WebStar on port 80. I want to serve my customised web pages (in the FileMaker Web Folder) securely using SSL.

I know nothing about creating a secure server. Can I make both ports secure? Am I making any sense? lol...

I would really appreciate any advice, help, info, etc. on creating a secure FileMaker server.

Thanks!! smile.gif" border="0

I'm not sure if you can do this with Filemaker itself. However, I do know you can do it by using Lasso with WebStar, which provides HTTPS, then have it communicate to Filemaker via the Web Companion.

SSL uses port 443, you will need to get a server certificate from a cert supplier VeriSign are the best known but there are others.

If you don't want to spend on Lasso................

You need to use the The Web Connector (please note I don't use it cos I got Lasso) as far as I know will alow SSL talking directly to WC. You may want to post a specific request for information on how to set it up. I'm sure there are loads of people here using it

On the other hand if you are spending someone elses money!.. smile.gif" border="0........

Buy Lasso WDE 3.6. The nice thing about Lasso is that because it is a web server plug-in all HTTP and database action calls come in on port 80. The communication with WC is then "internal" in the machine (or in a RAIC) to what ever port you tell WC to use. You have to inform lasso of the WC port if used in a RAIC.

So as you can imagine when you add the certificate to WebSTAR and and the client requests a secure connection all communication is moved smoothly to port 443 including database action calls.

Web Connector is free with your FMPro Unlimited but from what I can see Lasso WebSTAR combination is a more compact and simple (if not comparably expensive at $599 electronic) way of doing it.

Not to toot our own horn too much... But, an alternative to dishing out the cash for the requisite software would be to host your solution with a hosting provider that already supports what you need.

We offer SSL capabilities using Lasso/Filemaker here, if you're interested in such. Check out our site at http://www.pointinspace.com/ for info on our services. Feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions as well - [email protected].

Thanks a lot John and scratchmalogicalwax! smile.gif" border="0

Unfortunately, I won't be able to host my solution with a hosting provider. But thanks for the advice.

I'm going to create a new topic specifically requesting information on Web Connector.

If I use Lasso WDE 3.6 then will I have to rewrite all my code in LDML?

Thanks!! laugh.gif" border="0

Lasso includes a CDML compatibility module, so you would not need to rewrite your code. There are a few minute things that would need to be changed, but they're trivial - we walk all our clients through them. Search the past threads here for details.
