July 12, 200718 yr To Summarize My Observations about this release: http://www.filemakermagazine.com/blogs/aflgenx/filemaker-9-is-it-worth-it.html
July 12, 200718 yr Author thank you for your kind words... Just wait for the article tomorrow... You're going to like it. You forgot in the pros the non-modal script window. That's huge!
July 12, 200718 yr Author Alright I lied, we're done. I am putting it up now... This one has some really cool ideas for displaying data using the web viewer. check it out and see what you think: Web Viewers Without The Web
July 12, 200718 yr Okay, after that example, now I like FileMaker 9... So: "data:text/html," tells filemaker (and not the default web browser which would be subject to url length limit) that the data to come isn't a url and so it should parse html instead?
July 12, 200718 yr Author I believe that is correct. FileMaker now handles the data url internally, and makes sure the data gets to the underlying browser in an acceptable form. So data urls: 1. use the same syntax across platforms 2. can handle large amounts of data 3. are no longer susceptible to url encoding problems 4. work reliably on Windows You're in Australia, where it's probably last saturday at 2:00 PM right now. What's my excuse? :(
July 12, 200718 yr I wonder if the new fmp7:// url that targets files will be extended to targeting records and fields allowing embedded images. hmmmm triggering scripts from a url would be pretty darn cool too.
July 12, 200718 yr SixFriedRice, THANK YOU! I found the tips on your blog to be better than most out there and much better then filemaker.com. MANY THANKS!
July 12, 200718 yr Author Why thank you very much computer geek! I am sure we will have some more up in a couple days.
July 13, 200718 yr Newbies It is very simple to put scripts into folders (with some practice) Drag script below folder, then drag right to put it into the folder (Icon will indent to the right to let you know it is in the folder) Very simple once you know how
July 13, 200718 yr Hey SixFried, Very Nice presentation and the addition of the files is a very nice touch. I also like your blog, very easy to read and straight forward. [color:blue]Ender Said: “He, he. Actually, I've been trying to talk Harry into ghost writing a FileMaker book for me, I don't know why he won't bite." I may as well I’ve done everything else for the boy! [color:blue]Ender Said: It's a good offer: look through all my posts to understand how I think, then write the book as I would write it” Nothing new here either. Just means more time on the Sci-Fi channel… [color:blue]Ender Said: And give me credit for it. What's wrong with that?” How much more credit do you want from my stuff? How do you think it makes me feel you sitting there on the porch, eaten a Moon pie, chugging down an RC cola while humming Sweet Georgia Brown? Then I walk by your place with a girl and you yell out “Hey Harry that’s the first girl I ever seen you with that you didn’t have to blow up”! It’s just so wrong on so many levels. Hey at least I'm back in mens clothing! Genx, do you now see what I have to deal with here? I even got a phone call because of this post calling me all kind of unseemly names and really roughing me up. Thanks a lot Mom! Harry Edited July 13, 200718 yr by Guest
July 13, 200718 yr Author Thanks Harry, we are trying to get a lot of good content up there early... we are actually looking for some more article ideas. Any suggestions? Our next one will probably be one the difference between IWP and WP because there seems to be a bit of confusion. Not that exciting but I think it's worth it.
July 16, 200718 yr Author we put a couple more articles up over the weekend. One about the ESS feature we are editing a little and it should be ready tomorrow but the rest are already up. SixFriedRice Blog
July 16, 200718 yr Hi Jesse, Thanks for all the effort you guys have put into these and sharing them with the community! : *Edit BTW the post is password protected. Is it supposed to be? Edited July 16, 200718 yr by Guest Password notification
July 16, 200718 yr Author Our pleasure, we would love to get some more ideas from fmforums users as to more articles that they think would be helpful. We have a couple in the works... One on google earth integration, building filemaker widgets with FM Server, IWP vs WP, Find mode requests, page numbering and one on zero width tabs that should be pretty cool. We are always looking for more so please add your ideas!
July 16, 200718 yr Do you know what would be really cool, now that you mention google earth... If you guys use the google API a lot (I have been too busy to use it), it would be great to have a tutorial or blog on how to create custom communities within FM nad using the webviewer. Here is an old post that I posted... http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/183011 Nobody likes responding to my posts that I start. They dont like me... :frown:
July 16, 200718 yr One thing that might be useful that seems to continue to pop up would be. How to open pdf/jpegs with the image stored as a reference verse actually in the container. And also the differences in behavior on a Mac vs PC. Michael
July 16, 200718 yr Author It must be the shot glass full of vodka, that probably takes away from your credibilty ;-) I suggest naming yourself something much more credible like Six Fried Rice. It's got a nice ring to it and people can relate. I actually like the idea behind your post and will probably put some thought into it. We have done smaller projects for Google Earth where you organize a couple hundred data points and provide additional information about them based upon FileMaker data. It turned out to be pretty fun and quite sweet to look at when it's finished.
July 16, 200718 yr Author This is a great idea.... the image storage is a pain. When writing it up for the new book it was a little bothersome to test it. That could definitely interest some people. The Mac vs. PC thing would be great too.... I could spend a lot of time on that one.... things like screen flickering, and different font rendering sizes. Good call audio freak
July 16, 200718 yr “Hey Harry that’s the first girl I ever seen you with that you didn’t have to blow up”! LOL! You know it took my brain about 10 minutes to process that. At first I was like... "Why would Harry have to explode girls?". building filemaker widgets with FM Server That must be a Mac only thing yeh?
July 17, 200718 yr Author Genx, you are going to start a fight. That's the last thing we need... a bunch of FileMaker dorks, like ourselves, arguing about Vista vs OS X and mac's vs. PC. I just opened the smiley face thing for the first time... it's ridiculous in there. There seems to be almost 100 choices. I'm never going back in there it's scary.
July 17, 200718 yr Nah, I don't think I am, everyone knows I love windows anyway (personal preference) but that doesn't stop me having a go at them sometimes.. besides, it's been fought to death on these forums. And you're right, that smiley panel is kind of scary lol.
July 17, 200718 yr Author Alright, we put up an article about how to hook up the EES feature for FileMaker 9. We will probably put up another one in the coming weeks for advanced users as well: enjoy the article
July 17, 200718 yr Speaking of icons: Just when I was starting to remember what the darn icons in the Script Debugger window were without having to wait for the tooltip, they go and change the icons on me. Oh bother. Just give me text buttons... Note a couple nice additions to the the Script Debugger: Last Error (if you click it, it brings up the error code in the Help Viewer), and the Pause on error checkbox. Speaking of the debugger, I finally got Advanced 9 installed and found out unlike the old debugger where closing out the debugger window would halt the rest of the running script's execution, in FM9 it will continue on with the rest of the script. so you must HALT it first. Keep this in mind if there happens to be a DELETE in your script steps; maybe further down. So lets say that you put in a break point to do some debugging. Then you make some changes because you found the issue. Upon correcting it, you want to save it and then exit the debugging window. The problem is that it will execute the rest of the script upon closing it unless you stop running of it; whereas in previous versions, as soon as you went to close the window, it halted the rest of the script as well. Edited August 1, 200718 yr by Guest
July 17, 200718 yr Author Yea this is a pretty neat feature.... but can sometimes cause some confusion. You'll notice when you go to save a change in script that it is currently running it will tell you that you must halt. The nice part about about this functionality is that you can actually view the detail of a script and make changes without having to cancel execution. Which can be nice.
July 18, 200718 yr Author I know we were talking about how to retain the ability to number your pages in a pdf somewhere... don't know where, but we went ahead and wrote up another post on it.... here it is: Numbering Pages while using Append to PDF
August 1, 200718 yr Author I just realized I forgot to put this up for the consumption of my fellow forum members. We took some time to map out the ports for FileMaker server 9 so that you could figure out which ports to open when talking through firewalls. If anyone can think of any we left out please speak up! August 15, 200718 yr Was there a new feature about triggering scripts on field entry or exit? I thought I read something about it somewhere (can't remember where). Would be nice to have it work nativelly rather than then external plugin (MacExample/ WinExample). Michael
August 15, 200718 yr Was there a new feature about triggering scripts on field entry or exit? I thought I read something about it somewhere (can't remember where). This were just hopeful rumors; nothing more. http://thinksecret.com/news/0701filemaker9.html http://thinksecret.com/news/0702filemaker9.html
August 15, 200718 yr Author I'm still out of town vacationing so I haven't been able to do much work or blogging (sigh of regret). But I just put up an article on File Recovery which will probably be helpful to some of you: http://sixfriedrice.com/wp/dealing-with-damaged-filemaker-files/ By the way, it was pretty cool actually seeing some of you guys at DevCon and since it's in our neck of the woods next year we will definitely be hosting something.... What... I don't know just yet. Back to vacation...
August 15, 200718 yr "Was there a new feature about triggering scripts on field entry or exit?" No, but an enormous amount can be done with auto-enter calculations that negates the need for scripts. In addition to this some freeware script triggering plugins are around, so it's not like event triggering cannot be done right now.
August 16, 200718 yr I put off using a script trigger plug-in for years. Don't know why, just stubborn I guess. But I finally gave in after I saw the pre release of 9 didn't have it native and think zippScript 2.2 is the bombizzle. Fo' rizzle. If FM came out with native script triggering, I'd still use zippScript in all my solutions. It's free (but donate!) and incredibly useful. I no longer see script triggering as a priority for FMI and it's low on my wish list. (Set Field by calculation is number one.) And no, I am in no way associated with the zippTools folks, just a satisfied user.
