Port Forwarding on a simple setup

Featured Replies

An isolated Mac with a static IP DSL connection to the net. IWP is turned on and successfully tested using the Mac's internal IP address via port 80. Everything working. However, when testing with the static IP via port 80, what comes up is the DSL Thomson SpeedTouch ST516v6 modem's unfamiliar configuration screen.

A colleague says port forwarding needs to be set up for this modem, a subject that both he and I are unfamiliar with. Nevertheless we did get into the area for "sharing an application" which feels it might be right. See attached screen shot.

Are we on the right track? Advice welcomed.

First, make sure the Mac has a static IP address configured. You stated the DSL connection had a static IP, but the Mac should also. See Link

The port range and translate to entries can all be set to 80. The trigger port can be set to 0. Note that you must also complete application sharing settings, because otherwise, the router's firewall will inhibit connections. See Link for detailed instructions for this device.

You may still receive the modem's/router's login screen after doing this when you attempt to enter the 'public' IP address from the LAN; what matters is whether others can connect from the internet/WAN. The reason this typically fails on the LAN, is because the router will not map the public IP address to the LAN; ie it doesn't support local loopback. If WAN users are receiving a login screen, it's because the modem/router's remote administration feature is turned on. If you can't find a setting for this you can always map another incoming port, such as 81, and translate it to 80 on the computer with IWP running.

Your ISP may also block port 80 because its terms of service may prohibit running a webserver.

If all else fails, or this is the only computer to which you're mapping ports, you may just want to assign the public IP to that computer per 4.6.3 of manual (so-called DMZ). This is a simpler configuration but then the SpeedTouch offers no security layer.

USe port 591 for IWP. FMI have this port reserved and it also means you can turn on your web server on the Mac without reconfiguring Apache. It will also help you distinguish the Speedtouch admin interface.
