I don't know if I am missing something, but I cannot seem to find any method for converting a fp6 multi-file db solution into a fp7 single file one. Does anyone know if this can be done, and how? If it is not possible with FM7 without a thirdparty plugin then I consider this a major omission on the part of the team at FM. ("now you can store all your tables in one file", but oh! you can only do this by recreating your solution all over again. ?!* ). And while I am at it, there also does not appear to be any way of duplicating a table within a single file FP7 db solution either. I use a number of basic fields in a "template" table, but to build this in FM7 I will have…

I am currently working on Filemaker Pro 6 Unlimited. I have been working on one database project for my company for about a year. I am interested in learning more on my own and possibly databasing for others but I need to puchase software for my personal use. Which version should I purchase? Will Filemaker 7 be ok, or should I spend the extra money for developer?

I'm helping a client build a call center. They don't have a lot of money, but want to track all calls coming in to the center, so I figure FMP would be the best solution. I have a few questions.... 1. Are there any pre-built db's for call centers out there? 2. To start, I thought we'd host it over the web. We haven't purchased FMP for the office yet, so I'm wondering if I should buy FM6 or 7. How many users will filemaker 6 allow to connect via the web? How many will 7 allow? 3. Am I missing anything?

I have recently upgrade a client's machine from a 9500 to a G3 running Panther so it will network nicely with the rest of the office (Windows and OS X boxes). It doesn't need to do much, but one of the things they use it for is to run a couple of Filemaker databases for clients and such. However, after importing the old FM3 databases into FM7, it prompts for a user and password or gives me the option to view the database as a guest. The original databases weren't password protected. Can someone suggest a solution? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I have just upgraded to FMP 7 for Win. I have read the posts about blurry fonts and have installed the updater for 7.02. Still, in the PREVIEW mode, my text looks JAGGED if I try to view it at anything other than 100%! I haven't seen jaggies since bit-mapped fonts 10 years ago! (Yes the fonts are TrueType) Am I alone here?

I have a two file relational database (2 separate files) that I converted from FM3 to FM7. In the first file I have a portal where I can navigate to the detailed record in the second file. I tried to add text to a file, and got the following message. "This record can not be changed because it is already being changed in a different file. This never happened in FM3, and I do not think it happened a couple of days ago in FM7 under OSX 10.2.8. Clicking different records in the portal does not help. Going to a different master record in first file and then back ot the second file does allow me to change the record. Obviously this is not workable long term. …

Does anyone know if New Millennium's Table Consolidation Tool transfers the actual internal field id? I am converting a a solution with several extensive tables. I tried other 3rd party stuff and it hasn't worked. The only way I have been able to do it and get the field ids right is by hand. I was hoping that New Millennium's Table Consolidation Tool would do that and save me a ton of time. Thank you in advance for your time.

Okay, finally they are getting to understand that we need to upgrade to a newer version of FM. 3 is just toooooo old. My question is, how hard of a conversion is this going to be? I have FM3 Server running right now. I want to go to the newest version (5.5?) of the server. I have HUNDREDS upon HUNDREDS of repeating fields. Now I want to hear this from people who have done it and I want the hard cold truth. Not a sales pitch of "piece of cake". We all know it is NEVER a piece of cake. I will talk to the sales people later after I get some idea of how hard this will be.

I am an employee of a computer retail shop that is looking to streamline their business by creating a BETTER database solution than what they have already got. We do computer repairs and have a job tracking system, but the current database has got quotes, purchase orders, invoices, all the stuff that we no longer need. Is there any job tracking templates around that i can work off??? Any websites, templates, i am open to any suggestion.

Hi, I've created a solution with FMProDev7, it has 6 tables and 100-150 fields in each. Now there emerged a need to provide the solution for users running Win98 in their computers, which means that the solution would have to be made with Dev6. Is there any even remotely practical way to convert a fp7 file to fp5? The prospect of redoing the whole thing does not sound too inspiring... Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Jari V

Okay, to begin rebuilding my relatively large system (40+ files) I decided to start with the main hub of the system, the workorder file. So, wanting to separate my data from my front end, I made two copies of the file, one to be the front end and one to be the back end. In the front end, I was able to repoint the layouts to look at the table in the back end instead of the local table by just changing the table occurence. So now, all my layouts are now updated to look at the back end file, and since the field names are the same, it all works great. HOWEVER, when I deleted the local workorder table (didn't need it anymore!), it deleted all my fields off of my layo…

I'm begining the migration process to FM7 and, untrue to form, I'm actually reading the documentation. I produce a solution that I sell to multiple users at multiple sites around the USA. Updating the solution is a real pain as it requires lots of imports, and/or the use of a "reports" file that draws data from all the other files to create reports. So in upgrading to FM7, my plan has been to divide my solution into two files. One file with the data, and the other with the layouts and scripts. I really love this idea because, as noted, the workaround to produce anything like this structure in FM6 is tedious at best. Reading the migration documentation, t…

Is there any speed advantage to having the layouts in the same file with the tables in FM7? I would like to separate all tables and all layouts into two separate files...but was wondering if layouts accessing tables in a different file were slower. This is important since some of my tables are tens of millions of records.

This is weird. I converted an FM6 file to FMD7 (or it did) and now when I create a new layout, it's invisible (layout text and buttons) in any other mode. What gives? Am I doing something reallly stupid, or is this a bug or a font problem??? I can only see the layout in layout mode. Attached is a clone. Thanks Tripod Clone.fp7.zip

Greetings, One of my clients has Filemaker Pro version 1.0v2 on an old Mac LC-520 running OS C1-7.1. They want to purchase a new computer running Windows XP with Filemaker 6 or 7. I was able to copy their Filemaker files from floppy to a WinXP machine, but I cannot open the file. It says the file was created with FM Pro version 1 and it cannot be opened with version 6. What would be the best way to import from version 1 to version 6? I did see the option to export to Tab and Comma Seperated text, SYLK, DBF, DIF, WKS, BASIC, and MERGE file formats. What's the best approach? Thanks for your help! Regards, Jason

I have two offices that are located 300 km from each other, the Internet or dedicated connection is low speed (max 128k) they need to work on the same data. My idea is to install two servers one on each location and replicate the databases My question is how the two servers will sync the data, and if this is possible?

Four files forming an FM3 database solution were imported into FM7. There are 3 portals showing records from linked fields. One of the portals correctly shows a row for new entries. The other two portals do not have a new entry row, and thus no entries can be made in the portal. Any ideas?

Using FileMaker Pro 7 with Mac OSX 10.2.8, I converted a set of 4 files that were in FileMaker 3. Three of the files are related to a main file on "company id." In the 3 files I get a <File Missing > where Company Name should be. A calculated (concatenated) field shows properly! When I go to the Define Relationship window I am unable to link on the related field. There are no fields shown in any file other than the file from which I open the graphic relationship window. All data is in the files. Layouts are there, etc. If I open each file in a graphic relationship window, all the fields are shown for the "starting" file. What does it take to relink…

Hi, I've waited until the encapsulated postscript resolution problem was fixed before migrating to OS X for my production release of our database. As it was apparently fixed in 6.0.4, I proceeded to wait until after income tax season and walla- version 6 is no longer there! We purchased one upgrade to FMP7 and proceeded to test one file. It opened the FMP 5.5 file with embedded EPS on several layouts and proceeded to print. The !!&**@ program only migrated the FIRST eps object on a layout and converted the subsequent ones to low-res bit-maps, which is absolutely unacceptable! system is 10.3.3 FMP version was 5.5v2 on OS 9.2.2 (which worked just fin…

I am wholly confused by the sales and technical literature. For one thing, I've yet to see a decent matrix chart of features broken out by product. My main concern is whether FM Pro 7 supports XML/XSLT or not. (I'm NOT referring to IWP, Server 7, Server 7 Advanced, Server 7 Advanced Unlimited Super Mega Expensive Ultra!) FileMaker sales info has muddied matters by discussing XML under the FM Pro tab... and then after a sentence or two dragging in the Server 7 name. Also, I clearly remember when Claris dropped features from a FM Pro version and moved them into a higher priced component. So, the question is:

I am hoping that some kind soul could help us to understand the issues associated with upgrading and evolving the computer system currently used at our research lab. Currently we use Filemaker Pro 4.1, and simply open a filemaker database file from a shared location on any of our 10 client machines (running Mac OS X 10.3.3, Mac OS 9.2.2, and Windows XP). There is no automation of any sort. If you need information from our database, you open up the file and manually look it up. The system we are envisioning will have multiple components. First, we want to migrate the 4.1 database into a newer version of filemaker. Once that migration has occurre…

Environment : windows 2000 , VC 6.0 Dear all, I have installed evaluation version of Filemaker Pro 7.0 I am trying to fetch data in filemaker database from my VC application using ADO. I am using the DataDirect 32 bit SequeLink 5.4 odbc driver to make a DSN based connection. I am successfully able to make a connectin and write into it. But when im trying to read data from it , it gives problems. Its observed that if it has a multiple of fields with same datatype ( e.g. numeric) and the fields have data present in them in the table , there is a problem in retrieving data. ADO reports "Numeric Value out of bounds" for numeric fields an…

I only just got FMP7 a week ago, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around the new file structure, changes in field definitions, calcs, and so on. I have a pretty good understanding of databases with multiple tables (having dealt with it to a limited degree in Access), but I had a question: it appears to me that, in a situation where you have multiple related files, now ALL of the layouts have to be in a single file. Is this true? If so, I take it this now means we have to use the "New Window" command to bring up an alternate layout from one of the other related tables? This has me perplexed -- I guess just because it's a kind of jaw-dropping problem th…

I was reading this post about credit card number formatting, and went to take a look at Brian Dunning's "Credit Card Validator" file, which works only with FM5 and FM6. I converted Brian's file using DEV7, and the behavior of the program changed. Card numbers that were valid prior to conversion were now invalid. I poked around the calculations, looking for oddities in the conversion, and found what might be a bug in FM7. If you look at the calculation "HalfDoubledCC" in Brian's file in FM6 and compare the calculation result in FM7, the results are very different. Here's why: In FM6 and FM7, if you enter a 5-digit numeric value into a text field ("field"), a…

Hi Guys, having a problem with a very simple script that will not work in FMP7 whereas it worked fine in FMP6; If(IsEmpty(Invoice Paid Date);Int(Get(CurrentDate)-Invoice Date);0) If an invoice has NOT been paid, the above should return a value equal to the amount of days since the invoice was raised. If the invoice has been paid it should return a value of '0'. In FMP6 the script read as If(IsEmpty(Invoice Paid Date);Status(Status(CurrentDate)-Invoice Date);0) and if the invoice date was also blank then the calculation field would remain empty, however, in FMP7 if the Invoice Date field is blank the sript returns a series of numbers such as '731690'. Can an…

The UPS man is supposed to deliver a copy of Filemaker 7 Developer today. I am currently running Filemaker 7 on a MacIntosh G4 OSX Panther. The Filemaker 7 I am running was an upgrade from Filemaker 6. I would like to be able to use my current FM7 on a different computer and network it to the one I will have Developer installed on. How extensively do I have to purge vestiges of FM 6 from the current machine? I am concerned that if I load FM 6 onto a networked computer I will see an error message indicated that too many users are trying to work the same license. Do I need to completely erase FM6 from the first machine? Thanks for any help. …

My database converted fine... I think. At least all my invoicing and customer forms with misc scripts. I also have a plan book I print that has graphics in container fields. They are 300 dpi tiffs. In 5.5 they displayed clear, and printed at 300 dpi, all very nice. Now, I can print a usable book.. very bad. All the images print at 72 dpi, and diaplay very bad, like a 300 dpi can do at low zooms... so I think they are still at 300 dpi. If I re-import the graphic, it now stores it (I think) and prints at 72 dpi. It looks smooth, but prints fuzzy. I can't find any setting to control this, so I can't use the new upgrade and hope I can un-install and get back to 5.5. …
